    It doesn't matter what race they are. As long as they're learning the language and culture and they can sing, that's all that should matter.

      Yeah, in their new song, they have improved their Korean but still need some work since they have an accent but you can see in their videos that they have been learning as well.

      true, i get your pointㅡbut, like, to put in consideration, people have been giving kpop shit for years and years, and it's even considered a laughing stock to most. it still is now to some. and half of them are just now getting into kpop to ride with the trend. either you grow really kind or insanely bitter.

  • @secretBTRfan
    @secretBTRfan 7 лет назад +818

    These guys are obviously talented. They're not mimicking Kpop groups, they took the time to learn the language. That shows that they have a love and appreciation for the culture and style of music. It might not be your personal preference, but the amount of negative comments on this video are ridiculous and unnecessary. This group might have a lot to offer down the road, and at the very least, they deserve respect.

    i don't find anything cringey in this performance tho. Yeah their pronunciation is not on point but they did a nice job. Why are people saying that it's funny to hear them sing in korean but when their favorite oppas sing in english and the pronunciation is freakin poor they pay no mind? Pre judgement sucks.

      송기적 dey r awkward make us cringe if u think dey not cringing u r fooling urself n maybe u hve sympathy for dem der r always people like u. I hve never seen any group who made me as awkward n crinzy as dem. dey need to train like real kpop stars so dat awkwardness will be gone n grow as a group trainee days r golden days. da experience n how dey become kpop idols . many group out der waiting for debut who word hundred times more den dem . but here dey r just singing n not even entertaining. just funny n crinzy. dey call demselves we r from exp planet stealing exo planet . n exp n exo sounds similar .

    • @miraclegrace7646
      @miraclegrace7646 7 лет назад +26

      lol i don't have sympathy for them.I'd rather give my sympathy to those trainees who are working their butt off yet everything's not going in their way. I'M SAYING MY OPINION BASED ON THEIR PERFORMANCE ON THIS SHOW. I don't care who they are and what they call themselves or whatever plagiarism and imitation they do. If they are kpop wannabes i reallllly don't care. I repeat i'm saying my opinion based on their performance in this SHOW.So yeah, I am sooooo not fooling myself.

      송기적 based on dis performance also I find it crinzy. kpop group da way dey dance is idk suits best asian. I may sound racist but da fact is dat dey dnt hve dat kpop vibe dat kpop is known for. since dey hve western features dey look exotic n funny n dramatic when dey dance . iam getting one direction vibe. n some bad korean . sorry but dey should hve known kpop is a scary world where talent is a must . u need to be almost perfect . for dat train hard .

    Let's be honest here, a foreigner who had the time to learn a language is something but to perform in a level where they actually can be a singer of the English language but still choose Korean is really impressive. Though I'm not feeling that they should do kpop because it's making me cringe, I must say performance is 👌

    • @AllThingsJay
      @AllThingsJay 7 лет назад +14

      yeah you took the words out of my mouth...they do make me cringe...idk im just so used to the typical KPOP that when I look at them and see their video its more of a American Pop feeling to me and it's not because they're white...they vibe off more of American pop...they can sing...i wanna see them in PD101 cause them trainees are going through a lot...they need to step into shoes of real kpop artist and their trainee life

    They actually sound good and their control while dancing is admirable.
    I’m a non-Asian wanting to pursue Kpop because I really enjoy the music and appreciate the culture.
    There are many native Koreans giving them props but the non-Asians are getting pressed. Lmao chill.
    Kpop is just music mostly sung by Koreans. Hip Hop is an African American genre sung by people from all races so what’s the problem ?
    *The fact that they didn’t undergo the process all Kpop idols go through is wrong but if they’d gone through that I don’t think it’d be that bad*

    • @wahwahwahhhhh
      @wahwahwahhhhh 6 лет назад +7

      K L The problem is that they got a free pass to becoming an idol.
      They were able to become idols without the training and learning the language. All idols were trained to the bones, dieting, trained to speak Korean, etc. They are actually great singer but they don’t speak Korean, and they weren’t trained like other idols.

    • @EmilyBrock-sv8lg
      @EmilyBrock-sv8lg 6 лет назад +4

      @wahwahwahhhhh 6 лет назад +5

      Emily .Brock, Yes I know over time they will become better with their Korean and signing, but it feels that they got a free pass to become an idol in Korea. Usally most idols HAVE to audition then trained for years and years without knowing if they can actually debut. They did not have to go through all that and it felt unfair.

  • @yelmosleh

    I think is a wake up call to not only foreigners, but Koreans as well. I think of all the Koreans that would love to be a K-Pop idol, going through years of training, only to never debut. Or Koreans who think that they will never be as good a K-Pop idols. This should show that as long as ANYONE works hard enough whether KOREAN or NOT, they have every right to pursue their dreams in South Korea as K-Pop idols. I hope that this causes more Koreans to try to pursue their own path rather then trying to go through the training system. and I am optimistic about the K-Pop industry.

    • @gracep944

    I'm sorry but as a Korean I'm telling you: their Korean pronunciation is better in this cover than their official song (not that it's good). And they do need to level up their dancing.. I can tell they practiced and all, but it just isn't good enough

    • @chloe2258

    • @sophiehwang1269

      Chloe Renee True, but if their goal is to debut and be part of the kpop culture, they should at least live up to the least expectations. and I hope this helps people realize kpop isn't just some shit of random good looking asians, it's actually a culture to Koreans and for the singers, it's a dream they've been working their ass off to achieve for years.

    • @chloe2258
      @chloe2258 7 лет назад +4

    • @chloe2258
      @chloe2258 7 лет назад +12

      Sophie Hwang People don't accept this group because they aren't asian from what I gathered. but they definitely are trying to live a kpop experience. They're training, and practicing. They have basically given up everything for this excitement.

    • @sophiehwang1269
      @sophiehwang1269 7 лет назад +21

      Chloe Renee yes, I see that they are being discriminated because they're not asian, and I think that is totally racist and rude. Everyone can have a kpop experience if they understand the culture. however about exp, even though they ARE training, I don't see how they are understanding the culture. maybe it's because we haven't seen much of them yet, but so far it doesn't look like they know "kpop" enough, look at their pronunciations for example. I also think that they could've waited a little longer until they were actually ready to debut, because honestly when I'm watching exp I feel like I'm watching a group of trainees who know nothing about being on the stage and just started training. they could've waited until their dancing and understanding of the culture was better.

THEYRE LIVING ALL OF OUR INTERNATIONAL FANS’ DREAMS. i bet many koreans have a fantasy of being part of this beautiful industry some day, and so go people from around the world. these men like the dancing, concepts, art, fashion, and overall style of kpop, so they wanted to be a part of it. nothing wrong with it, actually very unique👏🏻💪🏼❤️

    Okay guys all your comments have me really confused. Like isn't it 90% of international fans dreams to become a K-Pop idol? Including a LOT of non-Asians. But the second an actual non-Asian gets the balls and backing to join the industry, you guys immediately start ripping them to shreds? Not every idol went through years and years of training. Many debuted after only months (like Baekhyun, Chen, Yumin, Jiwoo) and it's not EXP's fault that nothing similar to the K-Pop Machine Training System exists in America. They even took the time to learn an entirely new language until they were confident speaking it before they debuted.
    What I can't figure out is if you guys don't like them because they're foreign or because they're (mostly) white?? Like do you guys not approve of Alex Reid's addition into RaNiA either? Or is she fine because she's black? At least these guys have vocal talent, and are trying to assimilate to the language & culture. You can't even give them a chance?

      I personally have no beef with it, since they did it respectfully and promoted in Korea, rather than targeting America/not Korea.
      However, just to give another perspective/how I could see where people would be upset:
      If you think of it as if someone loves a small, on-the-rise restaurant that serves authentic ethnic food. Although this person may be nice and respectful, their family, who also sells food, is historically known for stealing recipes from other eateries without giving credit, AND/OR drastically changing the recipe and giving credit (thus, misleading people’s understanding of what “authentic” is & diminishes the real authentic eateries’ opportunity to flourish).
      So like, when that person eats & tries to replicate that recipe for their friends and family, it’s no big deal. However, WHENEVER THEY *SELL* IT, especially to the the same & expanding customer pool (thus becoming the original eatery’s competitor), it raises suspicion & worry that the “nice & respectful” person is repeating their family’s history.
      To continue this analogy in EXP’s situation, it’s like:
      The nice, respectful person with a shady family history was taught a recipe by the authentic eatery, added their own flair to it, and then sold it to the eatery. It wasn’t even like the person pushed for all authentic recipes be changed to the new one (more Western idols). Nor was there a wave of insecurity/doubt in the eatery’s original recipes (internalized racism).
      Korea taught them to Kpop so they could Kpop in Korea. I don’t see a problem with that.
      I read an article that tried to claim Kpop doesn’t need diversity since it’s Asian representation in international media - which is true for other non-Asian countries. However, because their target audience was Korea, a mostly homogenous country (where most minority representation is still East Asian), EXP was a splash of diversity in Korean media.

    I've never though that they would get so far. I mean, this started as social project and now they're even performing on shows like this. I've been into K-POP since 2006 and I had though that this could happen, a non-Korean band debuting as a Kpop group, yet I also though that it was a risky idea since the K-pop fans would go "this isn't KPOP because it doesn't have an oppa" or "this is wrong, it's not suitable" or "it makes me cringe".
    But, since I've listen to difference music styles with different artist with different colors, shapes and language. I come to accept this.
    For me music isn't base on appearance and people should accept this. KPOP it's kpop no because they're Korean, in the beginning it was like this but nowadays it's not because their visual that we like them, but because their music which is a combination of their culture and our culture, which makes it quite global.

    i think why people are feeling cringe-y to this group because its the first time that there is a group of foreigners that debut in a kpop scene. we are used to see covers everywhere but to actually see a full foreign group (without any korean in it) debuting in south korea is i think, a shock? we are used to seeing thai, chinese, japanese people in korean groups, but these people are from across the globe. they are good and i hope to see them in more variety shows to see what more can they offer. so let's be chill to them and see them grow in kpop. :)

    • @poormeowmeow
      @poormeowmeow 7 лет назад +15

      Fatima Grace Balane No it's because kpop is an exclusively asian thing. It's Asian media, for Asians, by Asians. We don't need non-Asians to capitalise on media that is finally our own. It isn't even just EXP, there was similar outrage when Alex joined Rania. And you can't say its racist when asians are in western media because the social context is different. society here is more multiracial; people from other countries and races were specifically brought in (as workers, wives, slaves or even part of 'human zoos') and have integrated into society, and therefore should be properly represented in media. Asians especially are grossly under represented in the west and is harder for us to get opportunities in the media industry (look at the casting for GiTS, Death Note, Avatar etc!! So much asian erasure) than any other race, so that's why you have a lot of Asian Americans going back to Asia to try and make a career in a country they didn't grow up in because there is higher chances of us succeeding "back home" than in our country of citizenship. on the other hand, white people came to asia to exploit us or bring us into their wars. They don't need the representation because they were never really historically part of our society. This is why people are so protective of kpop and other asian media (especially if you're an asian living in the west because you are in direct contact with the kind of racism that asians in asia don't really grasp because they don't face such oppression) But that doesn't mean they also don't see a problem?? I mean look both chinese people in and out of china werent happy when there were white people in The Great Wall. It isn't because we're "koreaboos" as some people claim, it's a lot more systematically complicated than that lmao

    • @BFHdovid
      @BFHdovid 7 лет назад +9

      You are narrow-minded, and racist lol, you can't say you're not racist. They aren't exploiting shit if they're seeing if their efforts at home about learning Korean, dancing to K-pop and singing in K-pop and then bringing it over here. They found a loophole in the system and why wouldn't they exploit it, and also the Koreans actually rate them so why should you have an opinion if they're good or not, you're not Houdini, you're just a netizen who chats a lot of shit.

Otherwise Kpop group will not uses english in theirs songs mmm? Asian people are for everywere! Why so much fuss or do you think in EE.UU are not korean people too? I went from kdramas to kpop, so.. say thank you to the dramas that now people want to go more to Korea( tourism) and don't forget the business people they don't mind wherever the korean people agree or not.

      vxrxs interesting u have that point of view considering kpop is strongly derived from Wester Culture. I feel u on the whitewashing that western culture does, but let's not act like if EXP were 4 black guys Koreans would accept that either. Bottom line, kpop fans don't like non Asians doing Kpop bc they don't want it to change. The problem is kpop has to change in order to grow and continue to make money. • @hayperreality
      @hayperreality 7 лет назад +13

      Trey Trey It's for a graduate school thesis. The author wanted to know if a kpop group could still be successful (sing and dance at par with other kpop groups) even without the rigorous training. Eventually, the author went back to Korea, built an entertainment company and these guys were signed under it. I guess the flak that they're receiving is the idea that these guys didn't even go training. I think KPop fans feel it's a disservice to kpop groups that worked like slaves to reach where they are now. The idea that white guys have it easy kind of thing.

      Imo kpop groups that promote in western countries still promote through kpop instead of Apop. But now they're trying to be a part of Kpop despite not being Korean, which isn't something we've seen in Kpop yet, so it's hard to accept in the beginning

    • @zahidakadwa8018

      I get that, but we can also consider there may be Asians who want to primarily promote music in the western music market. Before making it big in Korea, that was a John Park's plans by auditioning on American Idol. As far as I know, Busker Busker is more well known in Korea as an (indie?) group than internationally, which I think explains why no one is really bothered by the French member. As for Alex, I think there are two reasons people aren't bothered- she brings greater African American representation to fight racial discrimination in Korea and she's had proper training under a label (I think). Regardless, I'm quite sure there are a few others too, though by name they're not coming to mind right now. As for the training years, some people are forgetting not all idols trained for years. As far as I remember, Kyuhyun trained 2 or 3 months before joining Super Junior. Another recent example is Jiwoo who also only trained a couple months before joining KARD (the other members trained 5 years). :)

    I kind of understand why there as so many people against them. As an Asian American myself, I understand how frustrating it can be to be taken seriously in the entertainment industry here in the US. No one thinks of us as performers. Like that Chris Rock oscars stunt, we're basically bred to be accountants or doctors in the eyes of the public. Asia and kpop is the one place where Asians can be taken seriously and get a fair chance to pursue a career in entertainment. When a group of white men come in from a system that's basically built for them to succeed over minorities and decide they'd rather try and enter the kpop scene where Western Asians fled to just to have a shot in the entertainment industry, of course there are going to be some hurt feelings. I don't want to be mean, but it's borderline white privilege. NOW THIS BEING SAID, I am not completely against the idea of them. They're talented, and I hate the notion that a certain type of music or song can only belong to one certain race. Music is the magical element that can bring everyone together. Asia could stand to at least gain a better understanding of diversity and different cultures too, I've lived there and it's just as frustrating when they don't think you could possibly be American because you're not white. However, I better not see these guys ever complain about having issues breaking into the industry because of their race or people not taking them seriously because their white. That'd just be upsetting.

      YES I WROTE A COMMENT EXACTLY LIKE THIS, Asians have a stereotype on them that they're "smart" "nerds" ect. Long story short Kpop is a way to show how Asians aren't all those stereotypes and they could do much more. SO YEE PREACH THAT COMMENT

    • @nebullae
      @nebullae 7 лет назад +17

      Let's not play the "whoever has it the hardest can complain and everyone else should shut up" game. As for "Koreans... aren't... a... minority..."etc, OP used the word "minorities" as in the sense of Koreans/Asians being considered minorities in comparison to whites. Obviously, OP did not mean that Koreans/Asians are the minority in the kpop industry. Don't be dumb and learn to read context.

    I honestly think that the disrespect is too much, In America everyone of every race has the right to make music so if a group of white men want to sing in Korean it isn't because they want to make a mockery of it, it's because they enjoy it. That's like saying that a Korean person has never sung a song in English before when multiple K-Pop idols have. G-D had a song with Missy Eliot even though she's black. I don't think it's the Koreans who have the problem, it's just us foreigners who don't want to share our secret love for K-pop with the world.

      Dont call me oppa one thing American music and entertainment in general lacks is Asian representation. Kpop allows asians to break stereotypes and finally be represented. its a completely different thing to have asians in White-centric entertainment than it is to have white ppl easily come into the kpop industry without the hard training that most kpop idols have to go through, when they already have huge representation in the West.

    I officially don't understand why they're getting so much hate. They're obviously training in dance, vocals and their Korean isn't as bad as I thought it would be. If they work and train in Korea, have a Korean following, I don't understand why international fans aren't on board. From what I know, they train in Korea and stuff so I don't see any problem with this

  • @nolifedotcom13
    @nolifedotcom13 7 лет назад +62

    Look at it this way, a Kpop group who tries to debut here in America would be kind of weird ( if I am being completely honest) and it would be difficult for them as well, especially if they didn't have a solid fan base. So it would be cringy for them to try to do their material here in America, right? DONT LOOK AT ME WITH ROLLED EYES YOU KNOW ITS TRUE. I mean I would listen to it, but to the general public it would be weird. Now this group is doing the exact same thing, but in Korea. OF COURSE IT IS CRINGEY BECAUSE IT IS NOT THE USUAL KOREAN/Asian boys that we are used to, like how it would be if it was the same situation in america, if we had a group of Asian boys debuting into the mainstream music world. Some may recognize their talent, some will mock them. ITS HOW OUR WORLD WORKS. SUCKS, YES IT DOES, but it is what it is.
    So just enjoy their talent. No one is asking you to listen to them. I don't know the full story on them but apparently they are a social experiment according to some comments and look at you guys. YOU ARE WHAT THEY ARE STUDYING WITH THIS EXPERIMENT. you are the results. You are proving or disproving a thesis. You are showing what is wrong with our world. Or at least what is happening to our world. Just because they are white doesn't mean you should be bagging on them. MUSIC IS FICKING MUSIC. WE LISTEN TO IT. WE ENJOY IT. WE LIVE IT.
    SO FUCKING LIVE.
