This is probably the thing that pisses me off more than most other issues in WoT. How would my crew lose their knowledge of a tank I have trained them for? At the very least let them retain knowledge of tanks in the same line that they have previously been trained for.

@@jaskicd That is so aggravating. To be honest, I could even probably be okay with them charging me more (in credits (or gold if you prefer)) to add specializations to a crew. For instance, lets say I have an easy 8 crew who I want to train in the patton. Instead of retraining for credits I could pay credits to train that crew on an additional tank which would be more costly. Each additional tank training would be higher. Of course I know why they would never do this but really I'm just complaining and thinking out loud.

    • @nGEnigma
      @nGEnigma 4 года назад

If you think about it in terms of outside of the game, then yeah, retaining the knowledge would make sense.
In the game, how ever, it's a balancing mechanic.
"Oh hey, your tier 10 crew is maxed out and you want to put it back in your tier 5? We cant really just let you do that for the sake of other players..."
And in my eyes, it also works in a sense of learning how to ride a bike and then not riding one for years, then trying to ride one again. It's not going to be smooth, so you effectively have to retrain yourself.
Same with crews. The tanks may be similar, but each tank is a step forward in technological advances and the instruments inside will most likely be different as well. So if your IS-7 crew gets back in a KV-1...its gunna take time to learn how to operate it again.

I'm not a pro gamer nor even a GOOD player but i give it my all every time and find myself fighting tooth and nail to even stay alive not to mention get kills. I've gotten better through watching videos you, Jingles, and others have put up over the years but i still find it difficult to make anything happen. Its VERY frustrating and i find myself "wasting" free xp just to be moderately competitive, and more often than not i still cant do squat without firing prem rounds (and thus wasting more credits). I got into the game refusing to spend real money but i have consequently spent a few hundred over 3-5 years just trying to gain an edge (usually without result). Great video, and i find it mildly comforting knowing someone of your skill level finds it frustrating to grind all the way through these lower tier tanks. Carry on QB!

I can understand that the stock tanks should be slightly worse than fully upgraded, but at least the guns should be mostly options and not obvious upgrades that make them go from worthless to OP. Some turrets also make way too much difference, going from paper to impenetrable, and then there's the HP difference as well...

It could be that they could be different rather than POS. IMHO the biggest problem is that you have to upgrade the tracks first and just have more mobile POS rather than having it slow and heavy gun.
Maybe added armour should be researched/bought as well and just give options of faster/better gun/better armour right after stock.

So, no idea if this is going to reach anyone, but I played WoT 4-5 years ago, and during that period it was one of my favorite games of all time. I got pretty good at it too. I wasn't dark Purple, but I was a solid dark Blue and had plenty of games as great as any playthrough you've hosted (as I imagine most of your fans had). I got burned out though, and besides I'm a naval history fanatic so I spent a good 6 months to a year playing World of Warships, before burning out of that too.
Watching your videos lately made me nostalgic, so I thought I'd play some games to see if the magic would rekindle.
And it was a completely different game. Four to five years ago it was a cerebral concealment based shooter where an understanding of the map, player psychology, steady hands, the use of defilade and good understanding of tactics could allow an old man like me to play with a bunch of twitchy kids on almost equal terms. Many of times on group chat, I'd see statements like, "Wow, your X player is really good." (Well, many times I'd see a bunch of cursing, but I always took it to mean the same thing.) But in the new game, I'd load up maps with not a bush or piece of cover to be seen. Once familiar maps no offered no long lines of sight, no concealment, and no cover. The dominate tactic I saw was wolfpacks of mediums and lights swarming up to point blank range by utilizing the rolling terrain and high speed, and then out DPSing opponents in point blank twitch fests, or alphaing down the opposition before they could react. It felt like the game had turned into something like Call of Duty. Now, that's a perfect valid style of game, but it's not the same game that felt so different 5 years ago.
Is my impression just all wrong? Is there any chance for an oldbie like me going back to this game? And, if I were to go back to this game, what tips would you give me on how to learn to play again?

As an old WoT player and a longtime WT player I do feel like I need to comment on unlocking modules.
I will undoubtedly say that WoT does it better than WT. In WT some of the unlockable modules are essencial for your machine to survive or be the least bit competitive such as Repair Parts and Fire Prevention System for tanks and certain ammunition types for both tanks and planes, other than that a completely unlocked machine has, in some cases, much, much better performance than a stock one much like in WoT. But here's the kicker, there are very little module upgrades that change the hull of the machine, those being small armour "upgrades". So what happens in WT tanks is that while you can play every Pz.4, Sherman or T-34 variant ever made (or close to every) but they are separate vehicles which you must unlock separately and grind the modules separately to advance to the next tier of vehicle making some of the grind very painful as there are vehicles that are very, very bad. You can, however skip some of those vehicles as you advance in tiers by owning 6 vehicles of the previous tier and they allow you to grind whatever machine you want with whatever other machine you like playing, you also take a loadout of vehicles with you to battle so you can switch when you respawn.
In the case of WoT, I believe that their system was excellent for when I started way, way back in 2011, where the game didn't have that many minor nations and most of the major nations had a lot of shared modules in between their vehicles. I remember grinding my way up to the E-75 when I decided to branch out some more on the German tech tree, and having to not unlock every little thing on the MAUS line gave me this cozy feeling that my previous efforts helped me out in the long run. Nowadays I mainly watch videos and I notice that more and more trees just don't do that anymore both because they aren't big (just one line) and because there's an increase in prototypes that use prototype equipment unique to that vehicle.
On the flip side. Some vehicles (like the Pz.4) have alternate guns you can use which mixes things up a bit.

I was introduced to your channel by the Mighty Jingles. I had done reasonably well with World of Warships and figured I'd give World of Tanks a try.
I'm not going to lie, things haven't been going well. I play on the North American Server, so sometimes it takes a couple of minutes to queue up a game. Then, when the game does load, I end up dying very quickly, which I kind of expect because I'm a new player. New players have a lot of things they need to learn to become good, including angling, positioning, map control, equipment, and just plain old muscle memory. But when I go out into battle, it often happens that I push up further than I should. I don't know this, because I haven't had time to get a fully trained crew, much less the sixth sense skill. Had I such intuition from the beginning, I would at least be mentally prepared to expect incoming fire. Also making life harder is that I haven't had much time to become acquainted with the maps. It's not just knowing which bush to hide in, but also those bushes where the enemy might be. Experienced players know that certain roads are kill zones, but me...
The first indication that I've screwed up is usually when I get hit and I'm usually dead within seconds. Often times I'm killed without seeing what killed me or being able to return fire. This means that there is no chance for me to earn the experience I need to upgrade my tank from stock and increase the skill of my crew. And since I don't understand what I did wrong, there's no feedback on how to avoid a repeat of that experience except, "well, I guess I shouldn't do that again." I feel frustrated, helpless, and I can't even say that the game was educational. For a time, I quit the game.
When I saw you talk about your Playsforfree account, I decided to give WoT another go. The experience still sucks, but your videos have been super helpful, partly for the tips that you give, but mostly because they make me realize that I'm not alone in this terrible experience. One of the most crucial things I noticed was that you had hit indicators. By default, WoT does not have advanced UI enabled. Once I enabled it, I was able to figure out where the fire was coming from and from what, and sometimes I was able to survive a little bit longer because of that. Imagine the poor players that quit without even realizing that was a thing...
The new player experience is absolutely unforgiving. New players start with poor equipment, no crew training or skills, with only a vague notion of the gameplay mechanics, and are immediately placed into a battle against players who are more experienced, but also with tanks that are superior in both equipment and in crew abilities. Making matters worse, critical feedback systems like the advanced UI and the sixth sense skill, skills which are critical to developing a player's survival skills and situational awareness, are not available by default. These are disadvantages I have BEFORE we even talk about the matchmaker and how unbalanced some tanks are!
I'll figure it out eventually, but I still wanted to thank you for bringing attention to what I'm going through.

I definitely feel that having the stock tanks be so bad hurts my enjoyment even when I am in a good tank.
I remember one time I quit world of tanks, I was playing on Dragon ridge, which was subsequently removed. Massive hills, in a low tier match.
I was in a t-28, the russian tier 4 medium, with like 90 or 100% crew. I didn't have sixth sense or anything, but I remember blowing down this hill some guy in a tier 3 or 4 tank that could barely climb it. And it was so hopelessly one sided. I was shooting people who clearly couldn't see me, I was fighting from high ground enemies couldn't get to, and I was able to circle guys on the side of a mountain, where they couldn't keep a gun on me. Because I actually had a tank with a real engine and a real gun and a real crew, and they clearly didn't.
It was so dissatisfying, because I didn't feel I had earned it. I felt like I was cheating. Which is a real accomplishment on the part of the designers of world of tanks. To make a player who never got sixth sense on any tank, EVER, who never fired a round of gold, and who at the time, wasn't even running regular consumables, let alone premium, feel like they were cheating. I actually didn't play another game. I uninstalled as soon as we won. I came back after probably about a year or 18 months, but I still remember that time I quit.
Having to pay real money for 100% crews is just silly, as is sixth sense being gated. It also makes people feel like tank balance is even worse than it is. If everyone thinks the lee is bad, are they going to train a 100% crew for it? no. So it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy. I think the lee is bad, so I don't invest in making it as good as it could be, so I come out even more convinced that the balance in world of tanks is complete shit. Especially because every time you see an enemy "good" tank, it's likely to be someone who has invested in making that tank as good as it could be, within reason. Not all t-28's had sixth sense when I played, but I was damn sure none of the M3 lee's did.

I would give WG a pass as far as grinds are concerned cause im not 100% sure of their intentions, BUT THEN i played Type 61 and YOU KNOW some motherf**ker went and changed that specifically so that you have to grind 104 000 XP with a stock 90mm at tier IX because to research the 105mm gun, you need to research the second turret first and when you do that (80k xp), you cant mount either of them because the second turret is EXACTLY heavier enough so you need to research the other tracks! Well then , just use the stock turret until you get the tracks? TOO BAD because the stock turret is not compatible with the 105mm despite looking identical to the second one. Someone at wargaming made damn sure that you couldnt put that gun up until you grinded 104k xp with the stock 90mm gun, not even trying to hide it. Oh and by the way, the 90mm and the 105mm WEIGH EXACTLY THE SAME, so do the engines, they specifically only gave turret extra 300kg just to f*ck you.

I really don't understand the purpose of stock tanks and I really wish Wargaming would just remove all stock modules in the game. Keep only the top modules so that when you unlock a tank it actually feels triumphant, instead of just not even wanting to play the tank because of how bad it is. Wargaming can easily make money elsewhere instead of forcing you to pay money for tanks that are supposed to be free. Grinding the crew to 100% is enough. Of course, keep more than one gun available on tanks, especially tds, so that its not just the same gun all the time on every same tank you meet, BUT make each gun competitive, so that players can choose what they want. For example the 122mm derp or the 85mm gun on the KV1, or the 90mm or 105mm on the T29 (if the 90mm had more penetration than it does now to make it actually competitive).

It's why I basically tell new players to go for the old tech trees vs new with just one lane or two. As there you have less modules shared between tiers. And thus more stock grinds that might be bad. Russians, French, Germans or British have multiple lanes that share engines, guns etc. Making it a bit easier to do a second lane later. Like the Bitish HT's first. As that gets you the top guns for the meds one tier lower always. Or the Archer to get the 17 on the higher non turreted tiers early. Can't do that on the Polish.

Drive slower vehicles. It's really that simple, you're team can't leave you behind if you yourself struggle to reach the front.
I had the same problem back when I first started in WoT. You push ahead, trying to reach the most valuable real estate before the enemy can do the same, but new players still learning the controls and basic mechanics don't know enough to back you up. Slow, heavy tanks will teach you the value of sticking with your team, even if they don't know it themselves.

When I played the m4 up to about 350 my win percentage was about 48% at most, not the 50% the IS-3 has with only 200 games played. That's the point that I am trying to make. High tier Russian and Chinese vehicles seem to have the better win percentage on the NA server based off my experience because they are so similar.

Hey guys! Reading all the comments, I'd like to share my experience as well. I am really happy for such a video and I'm hoping it helps all the people out there who are constantly doubting themselves whether they are ever going to improve in this game like I always did. I don't use any mods, no xvm or such, because I sincerely think they make the users focus too much on statistics and rankings, rather than on the actual gameplay and having fun, because after all - it's a game, right?
I discovered WoT roughly 5 years ago and played a couple hundred games back then. I was a completely F2P player because I was going through a job change, moving to another place and did not want to spend any extra money on a video game. My first tech tree was Czechoslovakian tanks because I come from that country and I liked the idea of driving such vehicles since I like military history and everything connected with it. But oh boy, was that a painful ride! As a total rookie, I had no idea about crucial map points, common positions, bushes, tactics, angling, types of ammunition and so much more. I pretty much played only stock tanks with 50% crews since I was not able to make enough credits and xp. Yes, I had some good games, but honestly, they were usually there because the enemy team played miserably or there was a huge rng aspect rather than being "better" and actually deserving the stats. I always wondered how the enemy tanks could outspot me, penetrate under unreal angles and get me killed within seconds. And quite honestly, I expected this as a rookie to the game but there was very little improvement as I didn't know what exactly I did wrong, I didn't see my mistakes. I was balancing on the 47-48% WR and still was trying to learn more and more stuff from youtube videos and tutorials (thank you QB and Jingles

I'm a console player on Xbox. By no means am I a great player, at least by my stats. 47% win ratio, .96 K/D, nothing amazing but not completely garbage. I'm also free to play, I haven't spent a cent on this game on console yet I'm almost to my first tier X after about a year of playing. Of course, I was trash for the first 6 tiers. I chose to start with the American TDs and then began the American Heavies as well. I have my T30 fully upgraded with a fully trained crew and crew skills, same with my T29 and T32. Once I got my T29 and T30, I decided to take the game more seriously and actually learned all the technical aspects of the game. Skills, equipment, consumables, weakpoints, etc, and I began winning more and doing better in my games. My stats didn't improve because math is like that, one it's bad, it's hard to improve.
In December I decided to try out the PC version (I have a Macbook don't hurt me). I'm in uni and my console is at home. I haven't touched console WoT in a few months (excluding the two weeks I was at home for Christmas). Polish and Italian tanks are not yet in the console version, so I decided to work on those first, emphasis on the Polish. And good god. It is a struggle. Other than getting to used to playing on a laptop with a trackpad, I didn't have decent crews like I do on console, I don't have skills or equipment like I do on console, and I hate it. I play a couple hours over the span of two/three days (uni takes up time ofc) and I'm on the tier III Polish light tank. I have the opportunity to try out new tech trees so I'm doing a few too many tanks at once (American light tanks, American heavies, American TDs, Czechoslovakian mediums, and Polish heavies). But I'm on the verge of saying "Fuck this, I'm done."
It's so hard to have the motivation to play when it feels like I'm playing like a total potato even though I know the ins and outs of the game, like you mentioned at the beginning of the video QB. I understand maybe suffering a little to get to the fun/good tanks. But when the majority of lower tier tanks are difficult to play because they're either really bad or really good. The Pz. I C can take out the whole of my tier II and III tanks in it's single magazine, and I might shoot twice and maybe it'll go in. I'm not the best at aiming with a trackpad, and I haven't quite mastered the controls. But as I get better, I don't see a change in my results.
All I'm trying to say is this: You mentioned, QB, in one of your other free-to-play account videos that Wargaming essentially rushes you through tiers I-V. I kind of get why. They know the lower tier tanks are insufferable, and they either don't want to fix it, or they can't, so they get you through them quickly. But here I am, with my M3 Lee (oh my god it's just as bad as I remember it on console), trying to get at least a shot of damage in before a German light tank with an auto-loader comes in, get's my ass, and takes out the whole of my tank.
I want to play this game. I love it on console, and I see that same potential on PC. This is a unique game, Wargaming did well with the majority of the game but turned a blind eye to the minutiae of it. God knows how it's going to be with stock tier VIIIs and IXs. We'll see I guess.
Thank you for doing this little series of free-to-play QB, I appreciate you showing us what many of us have to deal with to enjoy the game.

Also: don't be afraid to fire on the move. It's usually not worth to stop and aim, (except if unspotted) +you have enough cheap ammo and it hits surprisingly often once your crew is better.

Not the best example. You definitely dont want a tier 10 light over the tier 9 one.

OK, I could have said arties... But any tier 10 requires a lot of grinding. And even I like the T-54, 400k xp is quite a bunch.

I play FTP in WOT. And I can say that getting BIA on my Panzer III/IV and VK30.01P immediately made the tanks behave far better (I run them with vents, optics and gun laying drive) than they did without.

A good tip for new players is to avoid starting with slow tanks. You rely so much on the MM, you learn slower about spotting, bush mechanics and map exploitation. They are generally more painful to play. With fast tanks you learn the value of relocation and defending. They are good for credit making because your games are generally faster, for good and bad reasons. Games feels faster because you can constantly be moving. Pick up fast tanks of whatever line that you'll enjoy playing well after grinding the experience for the next tank. That WAS the chaffee for me. It leads to the T71 which is a monster.

I have found players rush through the early tiers only to get stuck at a higher tier and performing poorly.(By players I am speaking of myself) So I have another avenue to increase your crew performance, is to not rush your crew training up the line until the crew is at 100%. For example, at tier one, do not move your crew up to tier 2 unless the crew is at 25% and the next tank is fully researched. Keep this method for tiers 2, 3 & 4 at which point the crew will be 100% with all tanks researched. Then at tier 5 do not move your crew up to the next tank until you commander has there first skill at 100%. Keep this method for tiers 6 & 7 at which point the crew will have 3 skills with all tanks researched. I have found this method helps with the frustrations of the mid tier grind. This puts starting tier 8 with a 100% crew with 3 skills starting on the 4th. At tier 8 do not move your crew up to the next tank until the commanders 4th skill is at 50% and all modules and next tank is researched. tier 9 is the same as tier 8 so that by the time you are taking your tier 10 out for its inaugural run, you have a 4 skilled crew starting on the 5th skill. This seams like it will take a while to accomplish, and it does. However, I have found that the play is more enjoyable as you move up and it improves you stats as well because you are not rushing through the tiers getting frustrated. (It also challenges you to perform well at the lower tiers) This is revision 3 of my method to "pleasant WOT play" and have almost completed my run up to the Object 277 which has taken me just shy of 2 months. (Have not been playing this line exclusively.) Your thoughts...

I like the approach Wargaming took in World of Warships.
You are starting with a stock ship that usually has ~10 % less HP and Main battery fiering Range and some disadvantages concerning air defense.
Apart from that, you are pretty much able to play your ship at its almost fullest potential from the get go (There are exceptions).
If you continue your grind, you will notice that you usually, after buying the B-Hull on a ship and getting those HP and AA defense upgrades, you are forced to research a C-Hull (minor upgrades in AA) for the ship in order to finally being able to step towards the next ship.
This can be a bad experience of course (Izumo-Grind towards Yamato is pretty eh...) but i can kind of deal with that much better in WoWS than in tanks because you are not putting your team in a serious disadvantage just because you are stock...
It would be absolutely an improvement if Wargaming added this system to World of Tanks too.
    Example:
Let´s say you are in the IS and you unlocked the IS-3.
Now you sit in your super-exciting new (possibly first) tier VIII tank after a mediocre grind (imo) only to find out that your gun is totally inadequate for tier 8 games. I mean, 175 or 217 (with gold) pen, come on!
When you take a look at the tech tree you will find out that you have to grind 44000 XP to unlock an adequate gun.
Since you are forced to play mainly against higher tier tanks due to our glorious Template System you will need at least 20-40 games to unlock the gun, even with an active premium account and arguably experience boosters running (Double that without any of those features).
I want to stress it once again: 175 or 217 pen at best against tier IX and X tanks. That is not enough to even penetrate a lot of the mediums there reliably, let alone heavy tanks.
Why is it not possible to give the IS-3 a decent stock gun that has ~200 standard penetration so it is not as good as the top gun but decent enough to deal with at least its same tier opponents effectively. Then you could give it the gold ammunition of the top gun to compensate for its lack of strength against higher tiered tanks.
Voilà, you just created a tank that is decent in its stock version and great in its top version!

I've always played WoT by pretty much only ever buying premium time, and then ive purchased a JagTiger 88 to get my crews up on my TD line for Germany. But one of the big offputting things is I always felt like if I wanted to get the full experience I would have to buy gold to do crews on any new tanks, to transfer crews over etc. It had always put me at a place that turns me off the game for long spurts.

I couldn’t agree more I totally forgot the grind. I’ve been playing since beta on the 360 then to the Xbox one. I had everything on console but just recently got into world of tanks on PC and man oh man I am feeling the absolute agony that is grinding a free to play account. Even with a month of premium I bought it still just takes so long to get to a comfortable spot on the game where I myself personally enjoy. Like I just got the stock T29 with the 76mm and my god it’s so slow and awful facing tier 9s in that thing. My overall win % went from 40% to 49.16% in a week after getting my IS-3 and then the 105mm on my T29 it’s honestly insane the difference. And like I said I’m use to this from grinding way back on console but for a new player I can’t even imagine them getting to tier 7 let alone grinding 50 thousand XP for the 105mm on the T29.

It may be unpopular opinion but playing on stock tank teaches you how to handle the tank. After learning "the worst", it is much easier to roll in the fully upgraded machine. There are some unplayable stocks out there, but most of tanks can be played even in stock.

Dear Quickybaby, since you already unlocked the T-150 I'll give you a Very Good Advice: don't make the same mistake I did when I was starting the game, grind the IS-3 Before getting the ST-I or you'll end up having to use a gun with 175mm of penetration on that tier 9.
PS: when I reached the ST-I I was so bad at the game I buyed it with almost 0 credits to spare, consequently I had to play it with 0 gold rounds and I also had to pick the free 50% crew (of course I also didn't have any equipments on it).
PPS: I started playing WoT in 2011 as a free to play player and I'm still a free to play player nowadays. Although I became good enough to be able to play tier 10 vehicles without losing money even if I decide to sometimes spam gold with my IS-4 or T110E3, I'm still very limited on my performances due to my 800-900 ping and my old computer that won't go over 12 FPS when I'm playing WoT.

The stock tanks and the 75% crews are meant to make people feel like they accomplish something by playing. On the other side of the street would be full crew with 4 skills and all upgrades right from the start, no grind at all. That would mean some people did not feel like they ahchieve stuff.

All this grind makes you a better player. I remember the days when I started and I picked my first line. The Chinese lights. Oh boy. 160 games and 200 WN8 in 59-16. And I always say that if you play a game for more than 10h/week you should invest some into it. Give the devs some love. There are no free to play games anymore

QB, Im not sure if you touched on it or if anybody has commented on it yet, but...One of the biggest things about you playing a free account and a new player is, YOU know everything there is to know about all the mechanics of the game, spotting, cammo, guns and ammo usage. So you are comparing yourself, an excellent player by all account to a newby who simply will not take the time to learn the game. All these new player coming in still haven't the foggiest idea and THAT is what the problem is with new players.

My way of grinding back then was by having as many skilltrees ongoing as possible, try getting present tanks and sell them for their garage slots. I then did play games untill i made one win then go on to the next one, so i pretty much need only half as many games because i never played without a bonus (unless in rare occasions i actually had fun, like in the 105mm Hetzer)
