Antique Rusted Hand Planer - Restoration - Workshop DC
    Hi guys, how are you?
In today's video I show you how to restore an old rusty Tramontina hand plane.
The company Tramontina is quite old here in Brazil and manufactures from pans and cutlery to tools with very good quality.
I found this old planer at a fair, it was made in the 60's.
So, to start the restoration I didn't disassemble the plane because it is very rusty and could break if I used too much force on it.
I decided to do electrolysis so that all the rust would come off and it would be easier to disassemble without breaking any part of the piece.
I left the part in the process for 12 hours, and it worked great, I took the plane out of the bath and brushed it with liquid soap. Now I can take it apart more easily.
I took the plane apart with just my hands and a pin puller.
There was still the deeper rust on the parts so I put the parts in a hot water bath with hydrochloric acid.
After 6 hours in the bath I started to brush the parts in water, the result was very good.
I started the restoration from the base, removed some imperfections with the file and brushed the entire piece.
I sanded the base that is in contact with the wood with the 120G to 220G.
After that I started working on the wooden handle, I sanded it all with 220G to 400G sandpaper, then I used mahogany impregnant and finally I used a layer of wood wax.
Now I can paint, I used 2 coats of primer, and 2 coats of gloss black.
For the letters I used yellow, the color used by the brand originally.
With the base restored, I started the second part, repeated the same process of removing the imperfections with the file, brushed and painted with 2 coats of primer and 2 coats of bright blue, original from the brand too.
The logo was also painted yellow.
Time to restore the blade, first I started brushing it all over, I passed the file on all the edges, after that I sanded with 100G to 220G, I didn't want to make the blade polished because there was no need.
To protect against rust, I nickel-plated it, and polished it to shine.
I also restored the screw and the rod that holds the blade, for that, I brushed the pieces, did the nickel plating, and then polished one by one.
Now with everything ready I was able to assemble the plane.
It wasn't difficult to assemble it, and I even did a little test to see how good it is.
    It worked great!
