  • I tried digiscoping to see how it compares to a telephoto lens. What I learned might help you too! Please subscribe to continue learning what makes life AWESOME: BioBush.tv/subscribe
On this birding expedition I tried changing a couple of things. First, I wanted to try digiscoping, where you hold your phone up to some binoculars or a telescope to record what you see. Second, I wanted to try stationary birding, by laying in a hammock.
The biggest lesson was that you should not do those things at the same time. Digiscoping needs a stable base. Hammocks are swingy.
The second lesson is that unless you are 100% listening to birds, you want to stay hidden for stationary birding. A camouflaged tent or building is much better.
On the other hand, it was lots of fun to try new things and be out experiencing nature, so join me to see what I could find!

When digiscoping with binoculars, you can steady the phone on one lens while lining up the phone camera with the other lens and that makes a it a little easier in my experience.

That is a great tip, Gabe! I was watching the screen, and it would have been a nicer experience to look through the other lens.

Unknown 3 sounds like it could be an eastern Phoebe but I can’t say for certain. I love digiscoping!

Thank you Gabe! I'll look up the sounds and see how they compare. Audio birding is such a new world - there are WAY more species that you can hear than can be seen. I'm glad there are digiscoping fans out there! It would go better with more practice. :)

I’ve tried digiscoping a little bit, and I also learned that it’s harder than it seems! You saw some cool species and pulled off some nice shots, I think this was well done. Nice work Steve!

Hi Harrison and Evan! I didn't stabilize this footage in post because I wanted to convey the real experience - it IS hard to get a good shot. Hooray for telephoto lenses, and in-camera image stabilization! And thank you for your support. It is much appreciated!

Thank you for the overview of digiscoping technology, and It definitely improves both the visual fidelity of the scope and the quality of life when birding. I always appreciate it when your uploads are engaging and informative( This applies to every video), and I definitely agree with the notion of spending less on cameras and recording equipment.

Hi Jack! Digiscoping was a fun experiment, and if I do it again in the future it's going to work much better (using a tripod, etc). It's nice to have an entire birdwatching kit for the cost of one telephoto lens.
In the long run I'm going to save up for a new telephoto lens, because ease of use and in-camera stabilization are so nice to have. Thanks for watching again this week!

“Unknown species 2” might be a Yellow-breasted Chat, but it’s just a guess.

Thanks, Vernon! I couldn't find the exact sound on xeno-canto, but the tone sounds very similar. Now I'm sad I didn't see the bird! It's a nice-looking bird that I have never seen before. I appreciate how you are so generous with your knowledge. Thanks for watching again this week!
