Grand Theft Congo - DRC

The major problem facing Africa is corruption and control of resources. In the DRC, the military is stealing minerals to sell to Western companies.
At a remote mine in central DRC, workers with torches and pick axes hack at the ruddy earth. They are mining cassiterite, a mineral vital in the production of laptops and mobile phones. But dispersed among the miners are Congolese Government troops -- in plain clothes for the camera -- literally forcing most workers to work at gunpoint. 'The soldiers always steal everything. They even come to shoot people down the mineshafts,' complains Regina Maponda. Western greed for cassiterite is fuelling the boom -- at an airfield near the mine, soldiers jealously guard their loot as it makes it way to Japan and the West. Conflict mining is a curse, and it is difficult to see what the G8 leaders can do.

The main thing they need is a Moral Revolution.
They should be aware of the value of their natural wealth, kick the UN soldiers out and be able to say "you want the goods, pay for it and pay the laborers". Personnaly i think, if Congo wants to be on top of their game, they need to get rid of this generation of congolese and put the ones who are very much aware of the value of the contry, is all about justice, educated and some who were raised in western contries (have somewhat a western ment...

This video was posted 16 years ago! Nothing had changed. No better governance. No better mining practices. No better commercial, trade and economic policy. No real benefit to local populations. The road via Burundi, Uvira and Bukavu to Kisangani is practically unusable for NGOs or faith based outreach due to exploitive conflict mineral mining and exports. By 2024 there are no flights to Kisangani and the road between Mbarara in Uganda to Kisangani in the DR Congo (as part of the cross Continental Highway from Mombasa to Lagos) is also beset by (paid) "rebels' (murderers, rapists and pawns for global exploitation!) and lack of road construction contribution by the DRC government. The Gospel of Peace is hindered by unrighteousness. The world and the Church are quiet. Everone's smart phone or every piece of more sophisticated Rebel weaponry require "cheap" conflict minerals from regions where war, confusion, trauma and displacement is orchestrated.

The plundering of natural resources in Africa has been going on since the late 1800's. It is just mind blowing that this goes on in the world, but it does. The sad part is little if anything will be done about it. These people have little if any education, they have no where to go and no way to get out of there. The next time you use your laptop or cell phone think about where the materials came from to make it. Chances are it came from a mine just like this one seen on the video.

We all know what the problem is but how exactly to fix it. Foreign aid does not seem to help. The Congo was actually much better off under Belgian colonialism and the older people remember it with nostalgia when the country had a functioning government, infrastructure and economy. I don´t know how to help Africa without neo-colonialism on a massive scale. It is obvious that africans cans manage their own affairs.

@kaunas88 "It is obvious that africans can't manage their own affairs." Africans aren't stupid. They are intelligent, capable people that, if given the OPPORTUNITY, would flourish and grow just like ANYONE, black or white, who has the opportunity to learn and be educated. Colonialism did NO GOOD for Africa. Maybe the Congo was better off under Belgian Colonialism, but I don't think it was ideal.
Like the video said, they need a moral savior. The leaders need a moral revolution.

Its sad that our consuming habits have such a detrimental affect on the rest of the world.... Btw it is not just America (that's not what anyone was trying to say) everyone who consumes products which use this metal have to realise the impact they have on the world by buying them. Individuals need to take responsibility for what they buy and the ethical implications behind it. Also it is not the case that we should be pointing the finger at one source e.g. gov't curruption in Africa

Understood, but see it from their side.. Most 3rd world countries don't have social security & or Medicaid/care. In much of the non-western world, living with an extended family is very common. This is in part to ensure you have children to not only work the farm plot, but also to look after you in your old age. There aren't many retirement/nursing homes, or pension programs. Also, high infant mortality rates + low life expectancy (due to natural & unnatural causes) = try & have many kids.

There are better ways to do this - there are thousands of years of world history to learn from and improve upon. How come Humanism is now so hollow? The problem continues because the world and Africa allows it to continue. All affected parties can choose to sit down and work out win-win solutions for all involved, and invest into community development for central Africa, while still using cell phones and computers.
