  • Peonies are so beautiful... they smell good, they have lots of blooms and they look amazing in almost any garden. BUT they don't always thrive in the south! They need cold time (which we don't get), they hate heat (which we DO get) and who wants to plant something beautiful just to watch it die? NOT ME! So here are my top 5 tips for planting beautiful peonies in the south (SUCCESSFULLY!).

I have great luck with regular peonies in the South. Full sun. I've never used ice, but I always feed them with wood ashes in the winter and spring.

I’m in 9b 🙋🏻‍♀️I’m still trying 💖that’s how we learn. So far we got lucky here in California and our winter has had basically 30 degree daily winter and even got snow this year. So far so good, everyone is waking up and beginning to grow leaves and stems 💖
Good luck ! I hope you get lots of blooms in the future.

Good luck! Sounds like you had quite a bit of cold this year... we only had a few cold days but they were well under 30 so hopefully that helped. Everything is putting up leaves and stems here so we'll just have to cross our fingers and wait on blooms.

How did your peonies do in their first year? I didn’t see any updates other than in a March update video.

I’m glad I found your channel. I am in zone 8b in Louisiana! I have 4 peony shrubs and I’ve only ever had 1 bloom. I have moved them several times… they are still hanging on. Thanks for the tips!

I hope this helps! My great grandma had a beautiful garden in Louisiana... one day I hope to grow up to be just like her. Mom says Nana always iced her peonies so hopefully it helps your peonies to bloom more!

I’ve just found your channel! Thank you so much for the tips! I’ve got my grandmother’s peonies from WV. My Mama dug them up, transplanted them to TN and then over the border into KY! Mama has had these well over 30 years! I’ve just dug those up and am going to try my hand at growing these beautiful peonies in Santa Rosa County, FL. We are also zone 8b🙏

I'm glad it helped! We moved a lot before this (army brat) and I loved the peonies my Mom grew in Colorado so I was sad when they weren't doing well here. I'm hoping that with a little attention to detail these will thrive! So far my two Jacorma plants are doing fantastic and the Shirley Temple tubers I planted are also leafing out... so maybe we'll have flowers in a year or two! Good luck in Texas!

I have a friend in sunny Valdosta Ga. Very little chilly weather. But when visiting, in April, saw (and cut some huge blooms to float) that were thriving. How is this possible? Also it was a tall, bushy shrub.

I couldn't tell you... sometimes things just work even though they're not suppose to. I have plants that thrive at my house and die at my mom's even though we're 10 minutes apart with the same weather. Maybe it was babied and had ice when it was a little plant... typically once somethings established it needs way less TLC so now that it's a huge thriving plant it can just do it's thing. I'm hoping I can get mine to that point some day!
