- More than 2,000 people gathered at Seaspan Vancouver Shipyards on Friday, December 13 to witness the launch celebration and naming ceremony for the first Joint Support Ship, the Royal Canadian Navy’s HMCS Protecteur.
Coming in at nearly 174 metres, it was a sight to behold.
It is a privilege to get the opportunity to construct strategic national assets that will help secure Canada’s sovereignty and security, and support the Royal Canadian Navy as it participates in operations in high-threat environments, including as integrated parts of Canadian, NATO, Allied, or coalition task groups.

A lot of stuff in the media now. As a US Navy vet, great to see this beautiful supply ship come out of a Canadian Yard for the RCN. From comments below, looks like the shipyard has plenty of work to keep 'em busy in foreseeable future. Hope for future our 2 great nations, we continue to work well together in the maritime environment. Especially as things open up in the arctic (trade & security concerns). I wish nothing but strength & success to our brothers & sisters in the RCN. As to skilled civilian workers in the yards, keep up the good work! What u do is critical. Take pride.
Congratulations to Seaspan and all the men and women who built Protecteur! 👍👍
thank you Stephen Harper
Indeed… for allowing Canadian defence spending to fall below 1% of GDP in 2014/2015 for the first time since WWII. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Good thing the Liberals funded the construction.
We definitely do not thank teudooo
Thank him for what? For allowing Canada's defence spending to drop to 0.99% of GDP in 2014?!? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Harper isn't the one who funded the construction of these ships, either. It was the Trudeau Liberals who funded the construction.

I worked on this ship...at seaspan we call it JSS 1 and we are currently building JSS 2.
And 15 more which includes icebreakers and canadian coast guard ships.
Proudly canadian made
Its a gorgeous ship and I'm really thrilled at the work you guys did. I am excited to see the rest of them and very proud of this being a great Canadian thing.
Looks like a fine & much needed replacement for our long gone x3 supply ships. Now we need x2 more, quickly.
Only getting one more… _Preserver._ She'll be launched in 2027.
By the time _Preserver_ is commissioned, they will have cost taxpayers some 6B$ or more (not that we shouldn't be spending money rebuilding our navy, or building our ships here at home).
Harper's original cost estimate was about 2-billion dollars for both ships-CONservatives were never really very good at maths… after all, they did take a 13B$ surplus given them by the Liberals in 2006, and turn it into a 9B$ deficit before the 2008 snap election.
@@MelioraCogitoYea….costs overruns can be placed at the feet of Irving shipbuilding. Why are the new frigates, based on a European model costing the British navy 1.5 to 2 billion dollars each and ours are going to cost a minimum of 5 billion dollars? What about the new Coast Guard patrol ships that have lead lined pipes in their drinking water systems? This is not just incompetence, it is negligence to a point that Irving cannot build a ship on time or on budget.
@ It's not Irving that is building these ships (Irving doesn't have any shipyards on the West Coast), these are being built by Seaspan Shipyards and outfitted at Seaspan Drydock, both in North Vancouver (Seaspan also has a shipyard in Esquimalt (Victoria)).
I was unaware of (or had forgotten) the potable water lead fittings Irving had installed on the DeWolf-class ships… I found a Dec 2022 Ottawa Citizen article on the subject… JFC! 🤦🤦♂🤦♀
That's beyond quality control incompetence, that's wilful negligence.
@@MelioraCogito I should have clarified, I know Irving does not have a ship building division on the West coast. My comment was a direct knock against Irving Shipbuilding, they are the masters of over blowing budgets and never delivering on time.
@@davidmorton9722 Indeed.
You damn well know there was a BIG FAT kickback in the works, when Harper awarded Irving a 288M$ contract in 2013 to redesign the Svalbard blueprints he bought from Norway for 5M$, with nary a plate of steel being laid or a ship being built in the contract.
Professionals in the naval architectural field polled by the media, all reported that the cost to redesign the interior layout of the ship, using an already existing hull design, should have cost taxpayers between 10M$-20M$ tops.
So where did the 268M$ we paid extra for, go? 🤔
It lined a lot of _CONservatives_ pockets… that's where (far worse than the Liberals Ad-scam, that cost them the 2006 election).
A good start. Much more needed.
Trudeau has nothing to do with this ship, for what reason for him to join the celebration? He is not qualified to attend it, this is disgusting
Wrong. He and the current government have everything to do with making this happen. And they went all Canadian. We had a great tradition of ship building in Canada at one time and it's exciting to see our government back it;s come back and support the CAF. Take your toxicity somewhere else. .
What is highly important here, and should be to fellow Canadians: this significant naval asset has the hard protection of two 20mm Phalanx CIWS besides its augmentation of .50 HMGs. Bravo! However, myself i would prefer to also see, six other non combatant vessels grow a single 20mm CIWS midships. Our brand new arctic patrol vessels. Littoral ships also require significant aerial attack shielding.
Edit: Why wasnt our prime minister present at the launching of De Wolfe vessels?
Answer: because we are not really proud of that product line. Truth.
Why Doesn’t Canada’s Navy Have Nuclear-Powered Vessels?
As a nation with the world’s longest coastline and a rapidly changing Arctic, it’s puzzling that Canada’s navy doesn’t include nuclear-powered vessels. This is especially surprising given the strategic importance of the Arctic in defense, shipping, and resource exploration.
Nuclear-powered submarines and icebreakers offer unmatched advantages in the harsh Arctic environment. They can operate under thick ice, stay submerged for months, and travel vast distances without refueling. Compare this to diesel-electric vessels, which are limited in range and require frequent refueling-a logistical nightmare in remote, icy waters.
Countries like the U.S., Russia, and China understand the value of nuclear-powered fleets, and they’re investing heavily to dominate the Arctic. Canada, on the other hand, relies on diesel-electric submarines and conventionally powered surface vessels, which are ill-equipped for sustained Arctic operations.
As the polar ice melts and global powers vie for control of this resource-rich region, Canada’s lack of nuclear-powered vessels feels like a glaring oversight. For a nation with such a vast Arctic presence, shouldn’t we lead by example and invest in a navy capable of protecting it?
This isn’t just about national defense-it’s about securing our future in one of the most critical geopolitical arenas of the 21st century. 🇨🇦
Sure Bubba, we can raise your taxes up a bunch to pay for all that.
@ Hey “bubba” taxes don’t necessarily have to be raised to implement nuclear-powered ships because their high upfront costs can be offset through long-term savings and strategic budgeting. Over time, nuclear ships reduce operational expenses by eliminating frequent fuel purchases and refueling logistics, which can significantly lower lifetime costs. Additionally, governments or organizations can reallocate existing budgets, secure private-sector partnerships, or use financing mechanisms to cover initial costs without increasing taxes. Savings from reduced fuel imports and enhanced efficiency can also help balance initial expenditures. Therefore, with proper planning and cost management, raising taxes is not a requirement for adopting nuclear-powered ships.
Because of cost. You can get 12 diesel subs at same price as 3 nuclear powered ones. I would rather have 12
@@johnarnold893 no spend money more wisely. I have good ideas like end equalization transfers and end all consultants without any tax increase. See problem solved
@@lloydkuepfer1599I’ll take nine and three if you are going to ask me to compromise. Twelve D/E are no good in the Arctic.

Thank you, Stephen Harper, for the multidecades National Shipbuilding Strategy plan, so Turdo couldn't screw it up like F35.
Ya… paying *288M$* to Irving for the design only, of the Arctic offshore patrol vessels (the *_Harry deWolf-class_* offshore patrol vessels) based on the Norwegian *_Svalbard-class_* ice-breaker (whose plans we had already purchased from the Norwegians for 8M$), was a real win for Canadian taxpayers-the Norwegians built their ship for ~70M$; the Danes built three (3) ships from the Norwegian blueprints, for less than 200M$ total; while ours have cost us ~5B$ for the six (6) RCN ships (almost 900M$ ea) and >2.1B$ for the two (2) CCG ships.
BTW, the CONservatives didn't budget for the financial cost of their strategy, they only had to pay for the strategy paper itself.
The *F-35* purchase is the worst decision ever made-we should have gone with the *JAS 39 Gripen,* which SAAB was willing to permit their technology transfer and construction to be done in Canada-employing Canadians.
We got none of that from the Lockheed, and now with the threat of a trade war with the Americans, I wouldn't put it past the *_ConOLD_* to put our F-35 purchase orders on hold until we bend the knee and kiss the ring.
He sinks everything in canada. Get him off there quick. Hopefully we have a captain at the helm, with a spine and backbone with some grit.
Trudeau can get lost.
Couple of things, firstly I'm proud it's canadian built. But we've been building ships for over 100 years the problems are not skills it's generally government incompetence. The ship is not shown in the water, and it's just an oiler, an armed cargo ship
Can you tell me more about the ship? Not shown in the water? Just a cargo ship?
You are being a dick. Give yourself a shake.
She is a beautiful ship.
Where’s this on mainstream tv?
Keep WOKe out of the navy
I cannot find any videos or pictures of this actual ship in the water , if anyone has any link I would appreciate if you could post them as for Seaspan if you have any vids of it in the water or new pictures please post, thanks.

Good for the Navy for getting a new boat, and good for Canadians building it. But how much did Trudeau pay Seaspan to make this video? i wanna build a ship!!!! im allready in the union. .. bah i like my job for next 2 years fk it
I get the added cost associated to keep quality shipwrights trained and the importance of maintaining a indigenous ship program. But when it comes to ships, quantity has a quality all its own. A two ship class is just bad Government Beancounter decision making from the start. 1 Billion spent on designing a ship that was already NATO designed and active in another navy is just incredible
You have technically a three ocean navy with two fleets. Two ships give you no backup. The Asterix doesn't count, especially when you insisted it couldn't go into combat zones because it was a commercial design? Which is total BS, used as an excuse not to purchase it outright or allow Davie to build the other three hulls.
Please lets go back to calling this an glorified small AOR and not a real JSS. The JSS was supposed to get the Army and its equipment where it needed to be in a short order.
We could have bought two Mistral class LDH for peanuts off the French and screwed over Russia over 15 years ago.

Boats for the Navy? Fantastic! Yet another thing that got done under the Liberal government. Great Job!!!!
Here in Alberta we have a brand spanking new pipeline. BC has natural gas shipping ports that are almost up and running. Bombardier stock is close to the highest price it's been in over 20 years. All this has happened after the disastrous Conservative government's and in spite of a global pandemic. RIGHT ON CANADA!!!! THANK YOU TRUDEAU!❤
The ship building strategy was implemented by the Conservatives, Trudeau just did not mess with it. As for the pipeline, yes he deserves credit. You know Canada has like a 60 billion dollar deficit and even the Liberal caucus is turning on Trudeau.
Why isnt it actually a ice breaker? These ships are idiotic they all should of been full certified ice breakers.
I am not sure you want an oiler to be an ice breaker.
The RCN has received 6 new AOPS and two more are being built for the CCG.
Seaspan has just started building a polar ice breaker 👍🏻
