30 And "Boring" (Ambition Is Overrated - Finding Contentment & Opting Out Of Society's Narrative)

- How much of what we do is simply to impress other people? How far would you go to impress others? Would you give your whole life for it? It sounds like a ridiculous question, but that is exactly what so many of us are doing without even thinking about it!
Why are you working until you're 65 in a job you absolutely hate? To make money? Okay, what are you doing with that money? Buying new gadgets and gizmos, houses and cars? Why? There will always be something new to buy. A constant chase to get the next best thing. Why would you do that to yourself? When is enough, enough? And when will you be content with what you actually have?
Wow I'm genuinely surprised this video has gained this amount of traction in a week! 🤯 I simply wished to get these thoughts off my chest and talk about them, I had no idea so many of you would relate to such a degree 🥰 Thank you for all the wonderful, positive feedback on this video! It fills my heart with warmth reading through all the comments and seeing so many like-minded individuals resonating with this message. It's wonderful to know there's a community of us who share similar thoughts and values and have chosen to opt out of the mainstream narrative after seeing it for what it truly is. Take care everyone. Lots of love, Gia 💜

@Rafael-wq4sn k. Make a proper argument, you don't even make sense.
@deadhands1981 the planet doesn't need anything. especially the stupid things you listed. The planet isn't a living being that has needs. you and all of us will be gone in a "blink of an eye" and the planet will keep floating around the sun like it did for the last 4.5+ billion years.
Yup, in order to make those tall glowing buildings everywhere we destroy forests and gardens and we don't realise that those forests and gardens are actually more important than those tall glowing buildings that just doesn't need to be built literally everywhere.
Very good comment, the capitalist running this planet don't want content people, they need us to keep chasing the next dream product

Ambition is good, but competition is not unless you're competing against yourself. But I think it's good to take a break at times.
@ competition is not good when you're competing against other people? I beg to differ. I will agree that competing against yourself is lofty and worth chasing
@@Andrew-dg7qm It depends on what the competition is. Chess? Baseball? Or trying to outperform others in life? I think sports competition is great. But when you're trying to compete with others on getting a prettier girlfriend, or to become more rich than they are...I don't think that's good. You will always see yourself as an underperformer. Social media has made society so materialistic thinking they need to constantly keep up with "friends" by buying endless things.
Not really. People consume stuff largely in an attempt to offset boredom. That's where the whole big house, big SUV and big TV thing largely comes from.
Nothing really wrong with some consumerism as long as you don't totally screw yourself from it.
@@devilsoffspring5519 Yeah most people screw themselves because of consumerism on social media. People especially gen Z now think they need to make 500k a year to survive. I'm so sick and tired of being asked "so what do you do/are you doing?" Trying to create a peaceful life free of senseless drama and stress is more important to me than impressing people with my success. Hustle culture makes people believe their life has to be this epic drama for the consumption of others. I don't want any of it.
Cuz you are wiser than them
Absolutely agree. However, I've realized lately that explaining all that to people is pointless. They still continue asking these stupid questions. Then I decided to play by their rules and just answer that I am reading Leo Tolstoy "War and Peace". Or Dostoevskiy "Crime and Punishment". Or similar. They get so shocked and become speechless. Lol. BTW, I've read most of Russian classic literature, So if someone asks a question on the subject, I won't disappoint. Lol 😂
Yeah, that question mostly comes after weekends or vacations. I usually answer with "as little as possible" while in my mind my answer to questions like "Did you do any fun things (during your time off)?" would be "Yes, I enjoyed the quiet not having to listen to your constant stream of babble or having to see your faces", LOL.

The pressure to always be doing braggable, postworthy, money-earning ventures is so immense right now. Your happiness from life will come from within and you will drive yourself crazy if you seek validation from other people to feel good about your life.
In all fairness, earning a really good income without the overwhelming and all-encompassing obligation/burden of normal jobs is a fine aspiration in life. I envy those who can earn a high income without being dependent on conventional employment and have a hard time imagining a better way for a human being to live.

When people start to figure out what the world is about, and what other people are about (some, not all!), the question is, what are we supposed to be aspiring to? “No need to spend all your energy slaving away to buy crap you don’t want to impress people you don’t even like/care about” is the mantra I ascribe to. I’ve long since grown comfortable with being a bit weird in terms of societal expectations.
You're not weird. Weird is a made up word to make you feel like that because you don't buy into the sheep mentality. If anything you have a stronger mindset than most.

I am lacking ambition in many areas.. and i am okay with that!😍
When I think about the more than 11m people here in the UK who can't afford food and 6m in deep poverty, I don't think about the things I don't have and focus on my safe home with warmth, clean clothes, food and family.
100% u put that beautifully im 35 & i feel the exact same way I think alot of peoples stresses come from the social norm every1 trying to fit in when the main important thing is a roof over our heads family being healthy & and income everything else is just a distraction to me.

It’s not that you’re not like other people, it’s that you figured out some thing they didn’t. Burnout is a sign that you are over it. That you no longer need to focus solely on the outcome. You can start to focus more on the moment and Ing and being happy with the process
Ordinary is beautiful. As a society, we place too much emphasis on "doing", "socializing" and small talk, chasing more. It's all overrated. I'm a home-body, live a quiet, simple life and I'm quite satisfied.

I agree with you, we spend our lifetime buying things that we don't really want to impress people that we don't really like.. I am at the stage of my life where, I don't want to have a ambition, I don't want to change the world, I don't want to live a fancy and luxury lifestyle... I just find it meaningless... having a roof over my head, living frugally, spending time with my pet, being close to my parents, listening to music, working out, or even doom scrolling on tiktok in bed are what keeps me happy and grounded, all other things are pretty much frivolous.. I don't even find travelling brings me much joy. Just being a homebody makes me happy and contented.

Great video, congratulations on this level of maturity and self-awareness at the age of 30. I'm already 47 and I've run the rat race for 23 years now, full speed, as a scientist in medical research. Had a terrible burnout and a cancer last year and I'm still very exhausted. This entire hustle- and overtime culture is highly toxic, particularly for us introverts. Well done for working this out whilst you are young. ( I'm nearly 60). I too am an introvert. I roleplay my way through life. My objectives were simple. Protect my family, clear the mortgage and end up financially secure. I hit that target with the mortgage clearance this year ( I've been working full time since 1981). I've always disliked work and pretended my way throughy work life to get through the boredom . Screw ambition. Work to live, not live to work. Those folks are just fools. You can always earn money you can never earn more time !

Yet, even from my clients it's always - so what else you do in your life, what is your future? To be honest, I just want time for my poetry, books and mental peace. That's what makes me happy. On the right hand page is all my work stuff, appointments, bills to pay reminders ie the grown up stuff. On the left hand side is all the fun/life/play stuff. As an example, I saw a poster for a talk and thought it looked interesting, took the details and wrote it down on the left hand side of my diary. @@softsophisticate This is really cool!
I’m 31, male, I resonate with all this completely. Most of my 20’s I considered myself a “minimalist”. That looks different for everyone, but for me it just meant I don’t work hard and sell my time for money to buy things I don’t need. Food, shelter, the RARE new pair of boots or jeans or simple Hanes black t shirts (5 pack) and that’s really it. Car, etc. I wear the same thing everyday, a black t shirts and black jeans. I have boots for work and sneakers for the gym/casual. I am very frugal. The only thing that has shifted in me in my early 30’s is realizing you can never have enough money. You have to save save save and hopefully invest to let compound interest do its thing. You see, through all the smoke and mirrors, the reality shows, the pretty lights, the friendly commercials and advertisements trying to get you to buy buy buy and consume and consume, is a direct threat to your survival. I think people hustle and are ambitious, atleast myself, is because i’m so afraid of not being able to survive. One bad injury. One massive health issue. The car engine goes. Rent increases massively. You get fired. You can’t find a job. So many risks. So many things can go wrong. And if you don’t have a stockpile of cash, you’re going to be DESTITUTE. So in my 20’s, I was fine with just working out, spending time in nature, working a 3-4 day work week. But as i’m getting older, I’m realizing if you want comfort, peace, you NEED money. Hard to love someone when you’re broke. Hard to relax when you’re broke. Hard to breathe or have any autonomy or life if you’re broke. Now everyone defines “broke” differently. A mass of people live paycheck to paycheck. But what about retirement? What about when these wolves that are knocking at the door finally get through? Mom dies. Dad dies. No more safety net. Nowhere to go. What are you gonna do at 50, 60, 75 years old without money? Go pick up a side hustle?! When you have a lot of money, most problems aren’t problems. But when you don’t have money? The smallest hiccups can be catastrophes. So for me, it’s hustle like mad, save as much as you can, because the rainy days are always looming. It really is depressing. But it’s the system I live in. I'm 41, and I figured this out at 38. Instead of filling my life with chasing money, I've spent the last 2 1/2 years becoming an acrylic painter in my free time. I find that much more satisfying.
We live in a superficial society ,we're being sold dreams we can't attain, selling ourselves out for lower quality food, products and jobs that pretend to offer a future,we don't have a great depression, or a great war,we're in a spiritual war .

Success is happiness, contentment and good health.
I wish there were more people like you. I'm 31 and the same way. I like living within my means frugally, and I just focus on health, exercise and hobbies.
I’m exactly the same.
I think the same way, I'm 33 years old, I have a stable home office job, I can stay close to my daughter and monitor her development. and that's enough for me. I'm happy for you.
To stop chasing success is the greatest success. 38 here and over the last couple of years I have been coming to the same realisation. I'm too old to live up to other peoples idea of happiness and old enough to decide what makes me happy. I know people that are 10 years away from retirement and are still chasing the unobtainable and maintaining false perceptions.
I'm 39 and had a similar realization recently. hf!
ha.. you took the words right out of my mouth
Here how I look at it if you can go to bed happy it was a good day and that’s all that matters.
Oh wow you are so right. How awesome to discover this at 30. Some people never understand this. And to be able to accept yourself and not get caught up in the machine or feel you have to live a certain way to be “accepted” by others is such a gift. Wishing you all the best, your life will be beautiful ❤️
Absolutely. I wish I'd come to terms with this at 30. I wish her all the best as well.
Worked my ass off over the last 11 years building a career in IT only for the vampiric Corporate machine to cut my job after telling us no one was going to get laid off. Now I'm rudderless and have absolutely no motivation to jump on that grind again.
This is a refreshing take, thank you.
Totally agree with you. Minimalism opened my eyes. We need very little to be contempt.

So glad I came across this video. I’m 50, and for much of my life, I was labeled as lazy simply because I chose to prioritize making music over making money for someone else who was already wealthy. Ambition, as society defines it, has always felt overrated to me. It seems like so many people are caught up in a system that pushes constant work and productivity, often at the expense of their own well-being and happiness. To me, that mindset has always seemed more like brainwashing than genuine fulfillment. Thank you for sharing your perspective. It’s a message more people need to hear.
I'm a 65 year old black woman. When I was in under-grad, I had a poster (for those of you who are young, "posters" were 16" x 20" paper-prints that we put on our dorm room walls) that said, "Happiness is the art of making a bouquet of those flowers within reach." That is soooo true. Happiness is a mindset of gratitude. I am an Atheist, so this isn't some sort of religious philosophy. I chose to look for beauty every day, in whatever or whomever is around me. I love your message and I am so happy that you are sharing it. A consumer mindset where you just acquire "stuff" is actually a road to discontent. You show so much wisdom for such a young person! Please keep your messaging up! The world needs your message.
Amen! I'm 30 and have realised this quietly in my corporate job. I'm happy to work my 4 day weeks, and care less about things, and let my "ambitious" colleagues run the gauntlets of management and job promotion. All lead to more work and suffering. I goto work, do my thing and go home. I perform satisfactory but never more haha!
A 4-day work week is cool! I would have loved to have earned the same money from a 4-day week. From my Kindergarten age I always thought that a 5-day week and a 2-day weekend was absolutely ridiculous and a 4-day week is much more balanced.

A very comforting video to stumble upon. I really resonated with the things you mention (also introverted and highly likely a neurodivergent myself!) and also can't fathom the way so many others around me view things at all. It gets very difficult, frustrating, and exhausting being surrounded by constant reminders and pressure from others about how we "should be living", even though it's technically arbitrary, so it's nice to see folks out there that don't dwell on that and simply just try to enjoy each day!

My favorite pastimes included:
Hiding all the sharp objects from her.
Soundproofing my office, so the neighbors didn’t hear her insults of me.
Oh, and a classic…

Congratulations !
HOW?? How are you never working again?? By making $135k last the rest of your life??? Is your house paid off? How are you eating? How are you paying for your insurance? Car? Gas? You must not be in the US because ain’t no way you’re making that $135k last potentially 30 years in the US.
@@dm2836 I'm Australian. That's $135k aud. I don't smoke, I don't drink alcohol, I only drink ice water. I don't buy milk, sugar or coffee. I have an insurance account, I opened an account 10 years ago and added too it week by week so it was paying me interest instead of an insurance company. I consume one protein shake at lunch, a half plate sized dinner at 5-6 and one banana at night every day. I own my home, I bought the third cheapest house in Australia. I own my car, it's a 4 cylinder small car that burns next to nothing and the shops are a walk away anyway. I designed my life so that I could retire earlier and got to a point where I realised that not needing a Lamborghini and a mansion is the key to happiness. Correct, good luck on your $135k. If you're in the US, as the previous person said, you're not set for life. As for that tired old saw, "making other people rich," god help you. Thank you for uploading this beautiful comment on society and a way to ecape the worst part of it!
Why is everybody convinced you are boring when you give up "keeping up with the Joneses" and relax? Leisure time is boring? It is far more exciting than chasing things you don't need or socialising with people who don't contribute to something meaningful in your eyes.
I always wondered why people are so obsessed with "hard work" and getting towards something, like why are they always running. Where is the end goal? It's almost like they are not running towards but more like running away, maybe from themselves, I don't know. I was never really ambitious and I' am also an introvert so I understand you. I am in my 30's living like I already retired and I'm loving it!!
yeah, it's like a hamster wheel
And your statement sums life up perfectly when you say “happiness is not a permanent state but contentment is a permanent state”. I don’t think being content or not chasing ambitious is boring at all, because you fill your life with much more meaningful things. Chasing money, getting promotions, buying a “better” car, working long hours, commuting, travelling for work, having an oversized mortgage, maxing out your credit card, drinking alcohol every evening to cope with the stress, defining yourself by your job, buying more stuff, and all the other stuff capitalism wants of us is terminally boring in my opinion.
I couldn’t agree more
I've learned that godliness with contentment is great gain! I would read this all the time, but never understood it until now at this beautiful age of 45!
Just 15 minutes ago I was thinking how my ambitions steal my energy and I no longer want any crazy development in my life. I just want to wake up and enjoy the cup of tea in my hands...I even do not care about my university diploma...I am so exhausted.
Get a hobby. There are a zillion really cool things to do in this awesome world. If none of that sounds appealing, I would recommend a therapist. I say this not to be negative, but if you can't find any joy in the world, you might need to speak with someone.
You are not boring. It's great that you saw how society is just pushing us to go faster and faster chasing things we really don't need to be happy. People who seem to have it all(material things) do nothing but work work work to get these things. Most of the time they don't even have time to enjoy these things. I just retired at 65 years old and I have a sister in law that keeps asking me what I have been doing. She thinks I need to be traveling all over the world. Well I was in the Navy for 4 years and have seen many countries. I also used to go on 2 vacations a year with my family to places like Mexico , the Bahamas, Florida etc.. So travel is not something that makes me happy. I can be happy just being at home, playing my guitars(I have goals with learning) and working out at the gym. I don't want to have others telling me what I need to do to make me happy. Just keep your same mindset and you will be able to live a happy stress free life.

We have no time to stand and stare.'

I found contentment at around 39-40 (42 now), and it’s been life changing. ❤ It’s all about gratitude, intentional living and being true to yourself. 😊 I loved everything you said.
This is great. It's exhausting how everyone has to tell you how great they are and how accomplished. Bragging about every single thing. It's insecurity really. Just chill.
I agree about not wanting to work 9 hours a day until im like 70 - I am 27yrs old and am trying out working part time for now. I can pay all my bills easily enough still and honestly find joy with not having anything to do. no real plans, other than just enjoy more of life.
The peer pressure is real, everyone around you buying this and that, new car, phone, house the next thing.. and then new job, new 'success' the 'next level'. And you feel so left out of everything, you start to adapt these wants and ignore what you truly want, a nd what every person really wants inside, a quiet balanced life, no stress, doing what you want, family, friends, having a tea looking at the sunrise every day..
Society and your family will resent you if you don´t want to impress them any more with your accomplishments and assets. Be careful. I noticed this, when after years of driving nice cars, I bought a practical extremly cheap used car in a country in which the people put a great emphasis on cars. I had even people come up to me to convince me to sell the car. Crazy. From there I started to see the pressure society puts on people and I started to rebel against it in other areas too. For example I started to change my hairstyle to one that I can mantain myself. I am even thinking about living in an old house in the woods. Like you said, I don´t even need more money. This is dangerous for the system of society, because if there is nothing external you are chasing or need, you are uncontrollable. All the best. Good video. Take care
You are 1,000 % correct in your statement.. I've seen it myself & I'm a rebel as well so to speak .. I see the truth behind the System
Been beating myself up lately for not being able to find ambition lately. I needed to hear this. God bless you.
Nobody lies on their deathbed looking back on their life and says "Man I sure do wish I worked more." It's beautiful that you have found your happy spot. Now you can focus on just enjoying life!
I would argue there are PLENTY of people who look back on their life and wish they did more. Ambition doesn't have to be applied to "work." It can apply to hobbies, relationships, reading more, etc. Lack of ambition in life is a sign of depression. The species didn't survive by everyone sitting around looking at the cave wall.
Absolutely spot on.
This matrix has convinced the individual that to fulfill one’s purpose one must thrust themselves into a rat race from which few come out alive.
This reality is an encoded experience that can be decoded by those who “get it.” You’re one of them. Good on you, and best of luck.
I recommend you look up the word delusion. You might be symptomatic of schizophrenia or mania. If not, ignore me, but better to look into it than not.
This spoke to me so much. Being introverted and neurodivergent myself, I grew up around career women and I wrote off so many types of jobs from the get go because I was taught that they didn't pay enough to live (which I now know isn't even true). It was only about a week ago that I had the realization that the reason I have been struggling through all my 20s to figure out what I wanna do for a living is that the jobs that actually fit my personality are the ones I wrote off while I was still a kid due to input from my mother and aunts. I spent so much of my 20s in uni trying to force myself into their shoes in any way I could, and while I accomplished a bachelors and masters degree I never found a job that I genuinely was passionate about. It hit me that a job to me is simply a source of income, a necessity to live and support myself. What I value the most is and remains what I do in my free time. I simply want a job that doesn't bring me anxiety and that pays enough for me to live comfortably.
In job interviews when they say "So why do you want this job?" I have to try really hard not to say "The same reason as everyone else, because I'm broke" 😆
@@memitim171 Job interviews are the worst because there's no way for me to be completely authentic without saying that I just want the job because it seems like one of the less awful ways to earn money 😂

Same here
When people won't stop asking you personal questions about your ambition, you can say something like "I don't have the need to constantly be achieving something just to feel good about myself". It's more polite than "none of your business" but still implies that you think they need to validate themselves, which will cause them to back off.
People are brainwashed. I once told someone that I didn't have goals. I was content. And they accused me of being a liar and just "coping" with life... 🙄
I have one goal in life and I won’t say what because Im private but I hope to reach it one day it’s a goal I really want. But I’m not going to do anything that don’t make me happy.
They don’t understand you and they may never in their lives. That’s why they say don’t throw pearls before swine.
I have been living frugally since 20s. Managed to buy my own apartment when I turned 30. Retired and opt out of society upon reaching 50. Meeting up with friends can be draining for me too. I keep a simple lifestyle where things can be very expensive here (Singapore). Wish you well.
