As someone coming from the war in Bosnia, people gravely underestimated the severity of war crimes, including Zelenskyy. I'm surprised the world is so shocked and uneducated, as if they expected war antagonists to play by the rules. This is exactly what happens when a country denies your sovereignty and your culture. But the Western World is finally paying attention to what war actually looks like and they'll eventually stop keeping track of the crimes. Even though Ukraine is not to blame for this situation, Zelenskyy is far too optimistic and doesn't realize he'll have to make a compromise to spare his citizens from suffering. Because it can become a hell of a lot worse.

We were in a much worse position than Ukraine, but we never take sides, we do not join any military alliance, and we are friends with everyone. We do business with US and S.Korea, but we are friendly with North Korea. Our biggest partner is China, but Taiwan company is free to do business in Vietnam. Our army would be crushed if China and US want to invade us again, but they just never had a strong enough reason to start a war. But Ukraine and Russia are like brothers, why ZLSky is so obsessed with going toe to toe with Russia. Why can you walk the line as we do? Just being neutral, and utilizing the influent from both sides to your benefit. Human life is the most important. You forget that the Ukraine conflict is of more strategic importance to Europe than to the US. There is of course enlightened self-interest in the actions of the americans. Their long term goal is to get Putin to act rashly and get bogged down so that the 22 largest republics within Russia can rebel and declare their independence, just as the 15 republics of the western border of the USSR did in 1989-1991 when the USSR was in terminal decline and could not muster the military power to stop them from self-declaring their independence. Ukraine was the biggest of such nations. This will be the greatest foreign policy coup that Biden is looking for and hoping to use to get re-elected in 3 years time. The Europeans will go along with it as a long term agenda of their military arm, NATO. Ultimately, the US and Europe want to confront only one military power, China. The long term plan is also the breakup of China as the domestic landscape of China looks eerily similar to that of Russia. Both China and Russia are only densely populated in their southern areas. Both China and Russia suffer from disparate assortment of ethnicities and religious groupings that are boiling to liberate themselves in the 21st century. Also,Ukraine had some economical problems, so they had no money to keep them (you have to spend some money to service nuclear weapons ). This decision was made to get financial help from USA (after that USA gave money) and to get rid of the weight on the shoulders, but I still can agree I wasn't the best decision and Ukraine should have invested some money in defense.

Ukraine crisis somewhat followed the template of Cuban Missile Crisis. What US did during the cold war, Russia tried the same thing with a step further by putting boots on the ground. It is in the best interest of Ukraine to maintain balanced relationship with both West and Russia without tilting on any side. Zelensky must understand Russia will not accept NATO near its doorsteps. US behaves the same way. The crisis also brought back the racism problem.

Zelensky's greatest error was that he started acting out his TV show script in a real theater of war. He was unable to call out American hubris in time. He didn't realize he was merely a sacrifical goat for NATO. The result is that he allowed his country and his people to be greatly damaged and scarred. It will take his country decades to recover from the error of electing a TV actor for position which required a very seasoned politician with good grasp of international politics.

The aspiration to join NATO has been promoted as essential to Ukraine's sovereignty. Yet Austria had US forces at one end & the Red Army at the other in 1945 & the two powers pulled out on the understanding that Austria would become non-aligned & join neither NATO nor the Warsaw Pact. The analysis overall has been good, except for the last minute. She assumes that Russia had actually gotten more out of Zelensky now than what they had demanded before (neutrality and a guarantee of not joining NATO), but that's rather naive to think that if Putin had gotten that from the get-go, he would've refrained from actually invading. Putin would've likely still invaded because we know now that he was _never_ gonna allow Ukraine to be a sovereign nation. At best, he would probably leave Ukraine alone if he succeeds in installing his own puppet government. But the assumption that Zelensky probably should've given Putin something from the beginning is absurd. Ever heard the saying "give an inch and they'll take a mile" ? That's Vladdy Putin. Zelensky had no choice but to fight, there were lives lost, sure. But Russia experienced the same. And he has managed to rally the world behind his cause, even if it didn't take the form of an actual military involvements from NATO. Russia is hurting just as much as Ukraine, and even if they take Ukraine, it would not be a _victory_
Hard lesson learned: You don't put your full trust in another. If there is help from outside, be grateful but be sure that you can do it yourself without any assistance from outside, and if you can't do it alone, never engage in such a fight where you would be at the losing end. As someone coming from the war in Bosnia, people gravely underestimated the severity of war crimes, including Zelenskyy. I'm surprised the world is so shocked and uneducated, as if they expected war antagonists to play by the rules. This is exactly what happens when a country denies your sovereignty and your culture. But the Western World is finally paying attention to what war actually looks like and they'll eventually stop keeping track of the crimes. Even though Ukraine is not to blame for this situation, Zelenskyy is far too optimistic and doesn't realize he'll have to make a compromise to spare his citizens from suffering. Because it can become a hell of a lot worse.

I'm Vietnamese, and I understand how precious freedom is. Our history is full of war and blood, whether it was with China, France, the US. We were in a much worse position than Ukraine, but we never take sides, we do not join any military alliance, and we are friends with everyone. We do business with US and S.Korea, but we are friendly with North Korea. Our biggest partner is China, but Taiwan company is free to do business in Vietnam. Our army would be crushed if China and US want to invade us again, but they just never had a strong enough reason to start a war.
But Ukraine and Russia are like brothers, why ZLSky is so obsessed with going toe to toe with Russia. Why can you walk the line as we do? Just being neutral, and utilizing the influent from both sides to your benefit.

You forget that the Ukraine conflict is of more strategic importance to Europe than to the US. There is of course enlightened self-interest in the actions of the americans. Their long term goal is to get Putin to act rashly and get bogged down so that the 22 largest republics within Russia can rebel and declare their independence, just as the 15 republics of the western border of the USSR did in 1989-1991 when the USSR was in terminal decline and could not muster the military power to stop them from self-declaring their independence. Ukraine was the biggest of such nations. This will be the greatest foreign policy coup that Biden is looking for and hoping to use to get re-elected in 3 years time. The Europeans will go along with it as a long term agenda of their military arm, NATO. Ultimately, the US and Europe want to confront only one military power, China. The long term plan is also the breakup of China as the domestic landscape of China looks eerily similar to that of Russia. Both China and Russia are only densely populated in their southern areas. Both China and Russia suffer from disparate assortment of ethnicities and religious groupings that are boiling to liberate themselves in the 21st century. That is essentially the long term global agenda. It was really complicated when Ukraine was making decision about nuclear weapons. Ukraine was threatened to be given sanctions for keeping it. Also,Ukraine had some economical problems, so they had no money to keep them (you have to spend some money to service nuclear weapons ). This decision was made to get financial help from USA (after that USA gave money) and to get rid of the weight on the shoulders, but I still can agree I wasn't the best decision and Ukraine should have invested some money in defense.

The aspiration to join NATO has been promoted as essential to Ukraine's sovereignty. Yet Austria had US forces at one end & the Red Army at the other in 1945 & the two powers pulled out on the understanding that Austria would become non-aligned & join neither NATO nor the Warsaw Pact. They seemed to have managed so far. Finland was in a broadly similar position & they seem to be doing ok.

The analysis overall has been good, except for the last minute. She assumes that Russia had actually gotten more out of Zelensky now than what they had demanded before (neutrality and a guarantee of not joining NATO), but that's rather naive to think that if Putin had gotten that from the get-go, he would've refrained from actually invading. Putin would've likely still invaded because we know now that he was _never_ gonna allow Ukraine to be a sovereign nation. At best, he would probably leave Ukraine alone if he succeeds in installing his own puppet government.
But the assumption that Zelensky probably should've given Putin something from the beginning is absurd. Ever heard the saying "give an inch and they'll take a mile" ? That's Vladdy Putin.
Zelensky had no choice but to fight, there were lives lost, sure. But Russia experienced the same. And he has managed to rally the world behind his cause, even if it didn't take the form of an actual military involvements from NATO. Russia is hurting just as much as Ukraine, and even if they take Ukraine, it would not be a _victory_
Hard lesson learned: You don't put your full trust in another. If there is help from outside, be grateful but be sure that you can do it yourself without any assistance from outside, and if you can't do it alone, never engage in such a fight where you would be at the losing end.
Zelensky put the lives & future of the Ukrainian people in the hands of the west. He was expecting the west to fight his battles. He is a bit short-sighted, in my assessment of him.

I think he was doing whats best for his country. He is protecting his country. Otherwise Ukraine would be Russia as we speak.

Excellent! Zelensky is a good actor but not a good statesman. His miscalculations have cost his people so much. Ukraine has to realise that it lies on a permanent fault line. It should be a bridge between the East and the West, not a wall.

Fun fact: USA only buys 8% of its oil from Russia which is only less than 3% of Russian oil production. Most Europe havent stop buying Russian oil since most Europe is dependent of Russian oil. 3% is not a significant number or impact to Russia, specially when China and India just increased their Russian oil percentage. Americans are hurting their own Economy for no reason. The world is turning their back on Americans. Ireland, India, China, Pakistan, Venezuela, Saudi Arabia, Russia, Mexico, Belarus, Germany, Iran. All have condemned USA for starting this conflict for profit which now its bitting USA back and their economy. Ukraine could very well be the end of USA as we know it
