One possibility is that they think of us in terms of smells which to me would seem more likely given how much brain power most dogs devote to that sense. The idea that you are inherently different from them may not even occur to them. Rather, they simply have a set of expectations which they associate with your scent in their minds. Anyway, this is just speculation.
