Great tips, as always! Somehow instinctively I ended up implementing very similar psychological approaches myself: training objectives (short and long term), tricking my mind that the weight is not that heavy and mindset consistency. This third trick is closely realted to long term goals, so it all makes sense together in the end.

That’s a great point! Being a throwers coach for many years, consistent tech and mental psyche was what I preached. “ know your form and let the technique in your mind throw the Disc or shot.” When powerlifting I think we forget about that. Thank you

Been doing these mind games and other visual stuff for some time. Makes a world of difference and if you dont do it, it will be random whether the weight feels heavy or light. Lifting taught me so much about the mind- body connection, and eliminating excessive psycho stress (mainly from maximum weights) makes you lift better. Brilliant Matt because not many talk about this yet it is so important. and interesting IMO and most people haven't even scratched the surface of this rabbit hole.

Thank you, I'm 70yr old, 152lb,5'10, w/ pipe arms&legs, never in a gym until 4months ago. worked up to 3x6 sets @ 335lb on leg press machine 5 days a wk, yesterday a buddy said to try deadlifting, I'd never used a barrbell, watched your vids on form and when back to gym after a tuff full body WO in morning, lifted 300 5 times until failure, slight burn but no pain after, was told I should start deadlift training to compete @ my age/weight group. Is this realist?? Thoughts?? my best chest press is 70lb, have never done squats yet.

Along this line of thinking, when increasing the weight I look at what does my body feel like. Should I use a bunch of smaller weight plates or use the bigger weight plates? Same weight but using some smaller plates tricks my body to think it’s lifting less and I have been able to push past barriers in this way. Especially when recovering after injury and feeling a little unsure about hurting myself again. When feeling great then I will use as many large plates as possible to show myself mentally that I can do this.

Hi Matt. Love your content. As a world record holder and an academic, rather than just a meathead, I'm guessing that you'll have studied the psychological in some detail, to maximise your performance. I'm particularly interested where you go to in your head when psyching up for that really big competition lift. Dr Stuart McGill talks about elite lifters going to "dark places" - suggesting finding almost murderous intent and rage (either internally, or by screaming and ranting). I'd be interested where your head is at when getting hyped. That would really make a fascinating video. It obviously requires a different mindset to ignore pain receptors to the point where tendons snap and where you are prepared to plumb those depths to win. I find that side of elite lifting fascinating, as that fear of injury is very real, even under the tiny loads I'm lifting - especially if you have been injured before.

Why don’t you ever discuss anabolics? Yes nutrition training percentages and programming are important… but anabolics make a tremendous difference

    • @WenningStrength

Oh yea?? Explain more!!!! Seen guys drug free stomp assisted lifters - witnessed lifters take way too much and only bench 250. So your comment is false

@@WenningStrength so what you’re saying is that anabolics dont make a difference ? Why is there a tested and untested category? And why are the ATWR between the too much different… untested of course much higher than tested ? I’m seriously asking because I want to know your opinion

A good one for squats is just because it feels heavy doesn't mean you can't lift it. I think i heard that Matt dimel use to tell people that
