Katherine and the older brothers have said it was normal discipline for that era, and Michael being very young when the boys got pushed into the spotlight, was more vulnerable than his older brothers were. I've also heard that Joe was abused himself by his own father, so it was pretty much all he knew. And he was demonized just as badly, if not worse, than Michael was by the media. I do hope Joe and Michael come to true forgiveness in the hereafter.
