The rules are identical to a regular duel except:
    - High Level Monster are Summoned Without Tributes. This is called Dimension Summoning.
    - When Dimension Summoned you use your life force to determine the ATK and DEF values of the Monster. [Max Their Original Stats]
    - Players do not take battle damage. Except from direct attacks.
    - Monsters Destroyed by battle or card effect Deal Damage to the owner equal to the ATK/DEF it had on the field when it was destroyed.

It’s worth pointing out that in Duel Links, during Aigami’s unlock event, if you challenge him with Kaiba, Aigami says the surprise Obelisk summon can’t happen a second time as they’re no longer duelling in the Temple of the Kings. Duel Links obviously isn’t canon, but it’s an interesting detail the game thought it was worth bringing up. 🤔

I think you missed a detail for rule 7, when a dimension summoned monster is destroy (either by battle or card effect) you take damage equal to that monster's ATK/DEF. You still take damage if the dimension summoned monster is destroyed by a card effect. An example of this is when Kaiba uses Obelisk effect to deal 4000 damage to Aigami as well as destroy all of his monsters (which in this case is a 3000 buster gundil), and Aigami took 7000 damage in total. It's like the Ba and Ka from the final arc of the final arc. When the monster (Ka) is summoned, it's summoned using spirit energy (Ba). But if it's defeated, then that spirit energy isn't there anymore, so the user takes that as damage. That's an interesting way to bring that idea back for this style of dueling.

One pretty cool detail about Dimension Duels in DSOD is that they more or less serve as a throw-back to the original Shadow Games we see in the final Millennium World arc. Dimension Summoning actually works quite a bit like the summoning of Monster Spirits, with the summoner using their 'spirit' to call and empower their servant monster, and then suffer injury/damage if that monster is destroyed.

I just rewatched this movie, so this was a fun watch. Also, according to kaiba, his new bleeding edge, state of the art, high tech system allows him to access every card he has ever own, which would include obelisk. My guess was that because Obelisk wasn't being imitated by physical means and just digitalized (Cause otherwise him pulling obelisk is straight up cheating) means that Obelisk perhaps couldn't recognize that its likeness was being replicated. It could also be that since the Egyptian God cards went with Atem, they could no longer destroy anyone who replicated them due to them being in another dimension? and since only a few people know what really happened with the Egyptian Gods perhaps Kaiba was the only one brave enough to attempt recreating god.
    Personal theories are fun.

One issue I have with the dimension duels in the movie is that they say you have to use your spirit or energy In order to give your monsters attack points. But that's not really taken advantage of by any player. It's just an excuse to make the duels quicker and get their powerful monsters out faster. Would have been cool for yugi or kaiba in their duel to deliberately not give their monster attack points, or give it like half points so they wouldn't lose as many life points.

The idea of dimension dueling sounded really really cool to me when I watched the movie and I was a bit disappointed when later seasons did not do anything that ridiculous. Instead opting to link summoning and whatever was the summon gimmick from sevens. But I do understand why because dimension dueling is pretty much in a way kind of like what our dueling is in the real world so it would make no sense for them to promote a dueling style that we already have in the real world when in none of the previous animes did it ever become an actual thing. Another rule that you would see with a better detail. Unlike the tcg/ocg rules with the cubic mechanic (the monsters that uses vijam(s) to be summoned have the effect of "desintegrate" to reform vijams and then search for another cubic monster from deck) you CAN summon the new cubic monster searched in THAT moment. In the movie aigami/diva attack with the first cubic to desintegrate in 2 and then summon the cubic that needs 2 vijam, desintegrate to 3 and summon the one that requires 3, that is a move that you can´t do in tcg/ocg because you have to summon the cubic ONLY ON MAIN PHASES. This hidden mechanic of summon allows diva/aigami to perform specials summons on battle phase. Even Kaiba special summon on battle phase (the alternative blue eyes), but because its a DIMENSION SUMMON you can do that

That, or playing very effect destruction heavy to exploit the fact that dimension dueling is effectively all burn damage.

For the last dimension summoning mechanic, be it Atem or Obelisk. If we actually wanted to play something as wacky and similar. It could be one additional summon from your side deck, or say in a best of 3, a card that was successfully summoned in a previous round. Even if cards were swapped out for sides. If this is the case maybe side deck limit 6 and you must declare 3 potentual dimension summons from your side deck, so your opponent can counter the rng of the summoning. Spirit gauge for ease of usage, irl should be limited to 0%/50%/100%.

But in the last season, he doesn't care about doing this in the present time anymore, although he could easily take all the items from Weevil and Rex. Instead, he gives them back to the Pharao and creates his Dark RPG. That is never really explained (as far as I remember) and so the complete motivation for his character in seasons 1/2 doesn't make much sense in hindsight. Maybe that's worth a speculation video :) thanks for your content anyway!

    1) You must play in the space between dimensions. If you do not go here it does not count. You’re just a weirdo if you play within your dimension.
    2) All duelists start with 5 cards and draw 1 each turn, even when going first.
    3) 8000 LP per player/team at the start of the duel.
    4) You can allocate a summon to be a “Dimension Summon” so long as you declare it before carrying on. A dimension summon is defined as summoning a monster by any means alongside this declaration.
4a) If a sacrifice would be required for the normal summon of a monster, but it is declared a dimension summon, you bypass the tribute cost in exchange for summoning your monster at 0/0.
4b) If you declare this on a normal summon, it is still treated as a normal summon. If you declare this on a special summon, it is still treated as a special summon. There is no limit on the number of dimension summons you can declare per turn.
4c) You can declare a percentage of “spirit” to apply to a monster at the time of its dimension summon. The percentage you declare will restore that percentage of their printed attack and defense.
4d) Battles involving dimension summoned monsters result in 0 battle damage taken, however, upon destruction( the user of a dimension summoned monster will take damage equivalent to the attack/defense of the monster respective to the position it was in when it was destroyed.
4e) The status of “dimension summoned” is transferred to any monster which has a dimension summoned monster equipped to it or present on the field as a material for its summon.
    5) You can dimension summon 1 creature from outside of your deck per duel, regardless of whether they are a playable card or not.

honestly there are some really cool Anime only mechanics that never got brought into the TCG/OCG and it annoys me, Dimension summoning/dueling is one, obviously, but another one is Accel-Synchro summoning, which was basically Synchro's version of super polymerization, major difference would be you could only do it with monsters you controlled, but it acted like a "spell speed 4" quick play effect, was really cool in 5d's am I'm still sad it never became real.

Yeah, I kinda asked myself the same question while watching the movie. Why did they came up with this mechanic just to kinda throw it away almost instantly by giving them 100% every single time?
I have a possible answer, and that is because they're the protagonists and have a LOT of willpower and "spirit", and it does seem to require some mental effort to manifest it.
That's also probably why Diva has beaten those throwaway characters so easily, no willpower = no atk for their monsters. I just wish they showed us a duel involving someone incapable of manifesting that much spirit energy, just to make it a bit more important that it ended up being.

  • @Ch1l1C0nCarnag3

I think they should have made Spirit be a resource the Duelist themselves has to manage. Like for example each Duelist has a maximum total of 200% Spirit, which means they could summon two monsters at 100% Spirit. Or they could summon one at 100% and two at 50% Spirit. Then have this resource be refunded when a monster using Spirit leaves the field. That way you can't just 100% everything.

Honestly, if I were to make anything like this, I'd just skip the whole percentage part of things and make it so that you have to decide what the monsters stats will be by simply stating the numbers (and obviously they can't exceed the monster's actual stats). Way less maths that way, plus it avoids the weirdness when you decide to give a monster with xx50 attack power an odd percentage, leading to it a certain amount of attack power plus half an attack point -- not to mention the madness that can happen when you take percentage decimals into account.

Well that’s understandable if you have a card like “trap hole” for example it only works if your opponent normal summons a monster. If dimension summoning isn’t considered a normal summon a counter with cards that are only activated through normal summon conditions would not work. Just like the magnet warrior effect yugi used at the beginning wouldn’t work. Those cards effect would have needed to be replaced by their dimensional counterparts. Or their effects would have probably been corrected by the dimensions they were dueling in. It’s like playing the old game yugioh game where you could just fuse monsters by just summoning them in the same monster zone like overlapping them without the use of polymerization. Or lose one of the materials use for the attempted fusion if the monsters wasn’t compatible. That game was more like a Pokémon type matching game where an earth card would body a lightning card with 10000 attack points with a 300 attack point Muka muka without taking damage. Ritual monsters were like divine monsters because their types were neutral could only be destroyed by a stronger monster or a card effect. That game was tricky because I didn’t have the manual neither did it explain how to fusion summon it was a little tricky figuring out the rules and how to use the low level monsters to make better fusion summon. The level cap your monster use at the beginning so you have to grind your duelist level to be able to use card’s with higher levels. There was no extra deck. At There was also no spell and trap card zone I didn’t know how to use the ritual card since basically you only needed the spell card to summon the ritual monster by sacrificing two cards. That’s what this duel reminded me of.

A rule you missed about Dimension Dueling is that you are allowed to Dimension Summon monsters during your Battle Phase (if able to), since in Seto Kaiba’s Duel against Aigami, he attacked with two Krystal Dragons, then summoned Blue-Eyes Alternative White Dragon, and immediately attacked with that new monster. (Aigami also summoned stuff during his Battle Phase multiple times when he Dimensioned Summoned his Cubic Kings and Cubic Beasts)

How do you think this would apply to Extra Deck Mechanics? Let's use your example and say you dimension summon Cyber Dragon with zero attack then use Machine Duplication to summon 2 more copies. Then you overlay the dimension summoned Cyber Dragon with one of the other Cyber Dragons to summon to summon Cyber Dragon Nova. Does this mean that Nova is treated as being dimension summoned since it used the Dimension summoned Cyber Dragon to summon Nova?

    Cubic Dimension
    Field Spell
When this card is activated: You can reveal 1 “Cubic” monster from your hand; take 1 “Cubic” card from your Deck, except “Cubic Dimension”, and either add it to your hand or send it to the GY. The turn player can Special Summon monsters using their own procedure during the Battle Phase. If a monster(s) is destroyed by battle or by card effect, its controller takes damage equal to the ATK or DEF that monster(s) had on the field in the battle positions they were in. You can only activate 1 “Cubic Dimension” per turn.

I liked how Duel Links handled it by just making it so you can normal summon without tribute during the few events it happened. I ended up using Blue-Eyes or a level 9 deck for these events. Not the most exciting duel type that they reimagined for the game, but I appreciate that they try and incorporate them as we only got anime 5ds Turbo Duels in the WC games, tag duels died out after Tag Force Special and it was the first time we got an official way to play Action Duels. I’m hoping that the Speed Duel sets continue to go strong and that they print skill cards to help reflect these dueling styles, maybe even printing Action Cards as proper Action Cards and not just edited for the normal game if it ever gets to Arc V.
Also hoping that Dimension Duels come back for an event. There are still some DSOD characters to include and it is taking way too long to give us Strings for DM.
