  • The interpretive competitors showed up with the clothes on our backs, a costume bag, a prop bag, a skate bag, and prayers. Then, we spent 30 minutes listening to a song about food poisoning.
This was my 4th time doing Interpretive at National Showcase and it was actually my 2nd time getting a poison song (in 2016 we got “Little Drop of Poison” by Tom Waits). I guess it’s just my thing!
As I listened to “Clam Dip (Corn),” I tried to comprehend the words. I heard “lo mein” and apparently it was “ptomaine.” I heard “stop the wind” and apparently it was “stop the wedding.” But, hey, it worked out. Thankfully I packed a chef costume and food props, which really came in handy. Leggings with pockets also proved themselves to be useful.
I’d like to give a shoutout to my good friend Kathleen Westmoreland who gave me a keychain which honors my all-time favorite food: avocado! I love that I was able to bring a little part of you into my program.
Though missing a gold medal by .12 points was a bummer, I had a lot of fun, was happy to be surrounded by friends, and achieved a personal best interpretive score by over 6 points!
For amusement, my unused items included: a Winnie The Pooh costume, a bathrobe, long gloves, a spatula, 2 Spanish fans, 3 rhythmic ribbons, a gun, and a gigantic ice cream cone.
