Thank you so much! I've recently purchased a nicely styled Chinese elm but with a horrible Nabari (only one large root with feeders coming from it). I was going to try your technique but wasn't sure it'd work. Your video just proved it does. 😁
M A R A V I L L O S O... el solo uso de elementos naturales (hasta para atar el musgo) ya es entretenido e ilustrativo. Además de mostrar el progreso tras un año! Eternamente agradecido.
***Update*** After using this method my elm had just a small amount of die off but within 1.5 weeks; new growth sprouting everywhere. I did leave a very small bridge in the graft but surely not enough to hinder new root development (btw, I used rooting hormone powder). Can't wait to see the results next year 😅.
Hallo Peter.
Hello, great video. I recently found a nice beech Fagus sylvanica with a beautiful trunk and branches, maybe 3-4 years old, perfect for shaping and I would like to make nebari roots. I would like to try this technique. Thank You for sharing.
When repotting a tree after drastic root removal and or air layering bark stripping do not remove any growing tips. Plant growth regulators (only animals produce hormones) will come from the apical meristems. Instead to reduce transpiration from the large leaf surface area I cut many leaves in half. You could also use an antitranspirant like Wiltpruf or CloudCover. You can use approach grafts from cuttings or seedlings while a tree is in the ground or a very large pot to gain large root and trunk diameter.
Great video for the topic itself, especially that you film progress over long timespans so we can see how it actually progresses. But, i think your videos would greatly improve if you would use all the silent time for explanations, it's probably not easy for beginners to recreate it if they don't know air-layering, how deep to cut, etc.
Wunderbar¡¡ Fabuloso. Great work and a better aspect with the new nevari. You get really thick roots on a short time. I like it, thanks and congratulations for your work. Now I saw your face and know how you look like, pleasure Peter (din Vergnügen. ;) Cheers
Hi.. I am new at bonsai...need some help.. I just wired my ficus religiosa's main stem to get an "S" shape... For how long shouldi keep the wiring?? How long will it take to get that shape and stay that way without the wire??. Thanks.
Thanks for your advice, if I have a young sycamore that last summer got black spot disease and shed its leaves, should I postpone repotting for this season?

Two questions if anyone can answer. 1) can you do this with basically and tree and 2) could you do sections around the tree to control exactly where they grow?
@@WorldofBonsai but you cut all the layers off. So there was no water/nutrients flowing from root to tree, I think the worked because its a Chinese elme, which root so easily. On other plants you need to take of the green layer but leave the xylem I think
congratulations on your first try. it was very instructive. I had never thought to create a new nabari. When air layering, I have had some success thickening the base by making 6-8 vertical slices above the rooting cut.
Hi, peeleng the bark off makes the tree think he is going to die, then he is building new roots just at upper end off the peeled off area. Since it takes several month the tree is still taking the energie from the old roots. See my air-layering video in my playlist. Cheers
It's funny how bonsai artists slice and hack a tree just about any where they like and plant it in a medium without worrying about fungal attacks or other diseases. !! What do they really use as fungicides or insecticides ??

For a ficus, should I make a ring? Or isn't needed for it's a easy rooting tree?
I would do a ring👍
Great video! Nice way to prevent the tree from dying when air layering

Whats the best month in the northern hemisphere to do that?
Thanks🙏

it seems the tree enjoyed the new roots - it seemed much more alive after the root progress

Interesante trabajo.

Great Demonstration how to create a new Nebari but could not see what was wrong with the original Nebari.

это вяз китайский? ULMUS parvifolia???
Yes 👍
Two questions if anyone can answer. 1) can you do this with basically and tree and 2) could you do sections around the tree to control exactly where they grow?
Basically yes, but some species do not root. Exact- no, ist nature
In which season we can do it.?
Hi, here in the Northern hemisphere best time is March. This will be different in tropic regions and down under. Greetings
@@WorldofBonsai thank you so much
If you're scraping all the layers off. Why not just cut the trunk completely?
It is a matter of time, cutting it of means the tree will die before rooting. It only works with some small branches called cuttings
@@WorldofBonsai but you cut all the layers off. So there was no water/nutrients flowing from root to tree, I think the worked because its a Chinese elme, which root so easily. On other plants you need to take of the green layer but leave the xylem I think

Why you didn't use rooting hormones?
For a good reason rooting hormones basically are not allowed in Germany. I applied some in the past but didnt find them useful 🤪
Your new nebari isn't uniform around the trunk. Is it possible to force new roots in the voids in a similar partial air layering?
Hi Eric, this was my first try. Think it is possible to improve
congratulations on your first try. it was very instructive. I had never thought to create a new nabari. When air layering, I have had some success thickening the base by making 6-8 vertical slices above the rooting cut.
Eric Gamble aha, might have some effect on the rooting. Interesting, include it in my considerations
If you’re cutting that deep why not just saw off ? The existing old roots are not useful for the tree. Right?
ooooke, saw off kills the tree if there are no new roots
i imagine there is some energy in the old roots that the plant will draw from, that might make a difference.. or something.. im guessing..
Hi, peeleng the bark off makes the tree think he is going to die, then he is building new roots just at upper end off the peeled off area. Since it takes several month the tree is still taking the energie from the old roots. See my air-layering video in my playlist. Cheers
It’s a great idea a safer way to air layer
i wonder the plant is still alive in spite no more line where food passes that connects the roots to the leaves.
The tree has very good grown this summer
