Just saw this revival at the MET last Friday. One of the most memorable evening of opera I have witnessed in the last few years. Just an incredible cast with Yoncheva, Bezcala and Domingo. A night to remember. Just fabulous.
She is wonderful. It is sad that people compare her to rose-colored memories of past singers, but of course every generation does the same thing. The best singers were always thirty or forty years ago, no matter when people do the complaining!
This role might suit her but I still hear strident higher notes. I like her but I’m still afraid she pushes her voice if she takes on too heavy roles too soon which she already does. I can can only hope she’ll will survive it.
I agree. Yoncheva is a lyric, and yet she sings much of the same repertoire as genuine spintos (such as Sondra Radvanovsky who has a significantly bigger voice). That's very risky. She's only 36, and yet she's already got the "Callas wobble" in her high notes.
Camille Greffe Hope she read this or somebody can tell her in order to reduce the risk of destroying her voice. Back to less straining roles, build stamina and the move on.
RUN to this revival, one of the best things the met has put on during this underwhelming season. Don't base your opinions on a dress rehearsal clip. Luisa is a primarily lyric role and Yoncheva sounded radiant last night, better than her Tosca, which I thought was fine but definitely a big sing.
Spinge in alto, in basso chiude la voce e diventa opaca, in alto oscilla. Chiudere Verdi e riprendere l Elisir d Amore. Ascoltare semmai la Ricciarelli a Londra nel 1979
Well, then you shouldn't even be watching to "opera", or rather "pure shit" videos and should have found another hobby since at least 1977. You're 41 years late. Good riddance.
Or it could just be that singing requires real, physical effort -- that, like a sport, it must engage the body. There seems to be this idea around that ANY visible, physical involvement during singing equals "pushing" the voice. This simply is not true.
I'm not talking about her visible effort. I'm talking about the way her voice sounds - it sounds strained and pushed. Singing requires A LOT of effort (breath control!!!) but the voice has to flow freely. It has to float and hers is einf pushed through, Yoncheva is visibly struggling here. She's not even 40 yet and she already sings such heavy Verdi and Puccini roles - and she's a LYRIC voice, hardly a spinto. A few years and her voice will be gone.
She's a lyric soprano while most Verdi roles are for spintos or dramatic colaraturas. She should only be doing Gilda and maybe Violetta. Verdi is just way to heavy for her voice and can lead to irreversible damage.
She’s growing on me. What a great artist.
Sick of negative comments. Please post your LM if you can do better.
Mary Vaillancourt kamaeeeeu

I agree with you about everything except Domingo. He did okay, but I really believe the part should have been sung by a youngish baritone.
one of my favorite Verdi operas!
My favorite Verdi opera next to RIGOLETTO. Very underappreciated.
magnifique !!
the great Sonya! I love her

Oh, you've noticed that, too?;) Lol, I agree.
Fab!!!
Fabulous!!! 🌹👏

tristanhnl Why not Mimi and Marguerite and similar roles for five years then move on to some lighter spinto parts?
Because people don’t care anymore?
It's usually a number of reasons (income, wanting fame, etc), but ultimately they are often pressured into doing roles too big for their voice.
Camille Greffe Listen how she sounded just a few years ago...
I agree this is three voices and chestvoice and higher notes are simply not sung right.

Undoubtedly amazing voice! Such a talent. Hopefully it lasts long.

Once upon a time there were singers…..
The low notes bear a marked resemblance to Frederica von Stade's.

Brava 🎼🌷🌷🌷🌷🎼
Brava Sonya!!!
Wobble at her age? Oversing!
Yep. The top is beginning to flap in the wind like a certain Maria Callas. Except that Yoncheva is no Callas. Which, I guess, makes it more offensive.
doGreatartistsgrowontrees? It's offensive yes... To Callas especially.... Dude wtf
Bravo Luca she s dead and opera died with her.
This above is pure shit only retarded people can enjoy
Morta? Ma... Quando? Dove? :(

Just adequate! There is nothing special here.
She is visibly pushing the voice. Either she's still too young or it is simply not a good role for her.

Detectivefiction Chestvoice is fake here and sounds unfocused and top is strident and almost wobbly.
I hope you can hear that.
