- Howdy! Today we are comparing the "Replica" TRD Pro Grill that you can get from Amazon or Ebay for under $200 to the OEM TRD Pro Grill from Toyota which currently costs around $600!!! Let me know know which one you guys would go with!

My Build: @atl_t4r
Tom's Build: @dot_tom
SEARCH AMAZON OR EBAY THIS IS A GENERIC KIT AND THEY ARE VERY LIKELY ALL COMING FROM THE SAME FACTORY FIND THE BEST DEAL AND GO WITH THAT
I just installed my replica as well. May I recommend to new buyers, put your letters on before installing it onto the truck. You can look straight down at the garnish and put the letters nice and straight without them having to be vertical on the face of the grille. Ez mode.
That works too! Good advice!
Should add another tip, take off the crappy double sided tape that comes with the replica and add real 3M or equivalent double sided tape.
My wife and I watched and our take away was how well your narration was, great job. I am a perfectionist also and if I make one little flaw I will stare at it every time I walk up, so OEM
Much appreciated! Yea if I had the $ at the time I definitely would have gone OEM but to this day it’s held up perfectly. Nobody knows it’s a replica grill besides me... and RUclips
OEM 👍🏻
i respect your decision to get a replica but personally i think i would go with the OEM grille just for the peace of mind and not having to worry about problems with the alignment or quality of the plastics. great video though!
Tom Davidson if u ordered from Toyota is it not vin suppic like the Trd pro rack
Plus he had to paint it before installing.
Heck, for the savings even if you messed up you could buy 3 more sets of these and still be under the cost of OME
Don’t rattle can paint it. I prepped mine fairly good with purple scotch bright pad, wiped down with degreaser then applied rattle can trim paint 3-4coats. Installed letters and decided to pressure washes the bugs off the front end and my letters came flying off peeling the paint. 😂 I recommend to just leave it the with the original black or use 2k paint. Might get away with black primer sealer paint but definitely do not recommend rattle can paint.
I own a new 2020 4Runner TRD Off Road with the Magnuson supercharger JUST installed and I ABSOLUTELY love.. I also installed the Fox Shocks from my brother's 2019 4runner TRD Pro that he upgraded immediately, (so they were only used for a few days of city driving) and I have a set of Toyo M/Ts my brother also gave me new lol.. I absolutely love my rig.. The supercharger makes it feel exactly as a SUV this size should feel.. I can pass on highways now, and i can crawl obstacles at much lower RPM now.. It feels like a V8 now, so just right for its size
Lunamaria curious on what your average gas mileage with the magnuson
Lunamaria just trying to confirm, did you install the grill from this video on your 2020? I'm trying to confirm whether it will fit or not with the new style of upper grill on the 2020 models.
Taylor Boe my husband and brother do the work on my 4Runner, so I don't know much about that... But i do know we ordered a blacked out TRD Pro grill for mine and installed it several months ago, but it was the real deal and not a replica.. If you have a 2020 I suggest ordering the real grill.
If you wanted to avoid the paint fading you should go with a car wrap material like 3M or Avery like a satin black there’s so many silver’s and blacks to choose from and their is no difficult curves to wrap around.
I recommend getting an aftermarket one with screw on letters like Taco vinyls. The letters will come off in the car wash. Use a dot of super glue when installing these letters. I also removed all the cheap tape and replaced it with .40 3M tape on the garnish
You have a link for this one? There’s a ton of reps out there
I got the overland depot grill with the letters preinstalled. I screwed up the alignment and had to rip it off and reset. Hope the tape sticks!
You just saved me alot of effort, the Overland is on sale right now
dont bother with the SEM Trim paint if youre new to painting of any kind. I had to scrap my Replica kit and go out and buy the OEM one. Whats annoying is there isnt anything on forms claiming the replica to yellow or fade. BAD ADVICE IF YOU'RE NEW TO PAINTING. If you've had experience with paint, Go for it.
I wonder if the TRD Pro truck grill (referring to the entire trim level and not the grill itself) also has just a plastic cover for a grill, or that the horizontal bar itself is pre-manufactured with the TOYOTA lettering
Can't really tell the difference in this video. I bought the OEM one so I didn't have to bother with painting or adding letters but the replica looks the same to me.
I caution people to be carful of which replica they’re buying from. The one I bought the fitment was so horrible I had to get another one.
Hey man can you post the link where you bought the grill?
Ebay. $70 right now.
Nice video! Thanks for posting it. You gave me an idea with the paint. I think I'll paint mine to camo.
can you buy this without dimples or holes for letters?
Great video. I've been looking for a video that clearly shows the gap difference from OEM that I'd be accepting.
I have '17 black TRD Off Road and have ordered the part through Amazon. Personally I think this is just a nicer grill option and has nothing to do with trying to pass it off as a Pro. Has anyone matched the garnish to the body color? Trying to decide if I should use SEM trim paint or the midnight black that matches the body color.
ghostly.t4r on Instgaram color matched his Pro grill without the letters. I think it's a badass look
Hi Peter! Can you provide the link to amazon?
Also can I used this for 2013 limited? TIA
Just desired to emphasize I'm just thankful I happened upon your video!
This was a crazy good video! Thank you! I am saving for when hubs does this mod.
Glad I could help!
How’s your SEM paint holding up? I’ve been wanting to do this with my pro grill. Did you add clear coat afterwards?
I have the oem grill and love the look. Why do they have a gap...it would look better without it. It was also tough to get it perfectly centered...I aligned the notches on the top but still notice just a slight difference for the gap sizes on the sides. Anyone else have this with their oem?
Question? Do you still have this replica grille still on your 4Runner?
What is the condition after 2 years?
Yup! Visually it’s holding up perfectly. I will say that on the two far sides the adhesive has come up a tiny bit. I would recommend adding some extra adhesive yourself to the edges but it’s really hard to notice.
what. is this relaxing background music?
Thank you for a very well instructed video. I just recently received my front grille mode and plan to paint it also. What color was that SEL Trim Paint? And secondly, did you sand with just medium grit sandpaper?
SEM Black Trim Paint is what it’s called. We just used a basic scuff pad, you don’t want to use anything too rough!
Did u spray the valence with sem paint?
Well done.....nice video presentation and verbal instructions.
I went with the ebay generic. No way I'm paying that much for the OEM. And I work at a Toyota dealership! Lol
If i bought aftermarket, can dealership still put it on??
@@j.davis891 it’s too easy, do it yourself
If you buy it from Toyota you still keep the bottom part and have to use the 3M tape on the bottom cover?
What did you use to scuff it up? Planning on doing what you did step by step
We just used a simple scuff pad!
Awesome narration
Just installed mine and for some reason the bottom right and left does seem to come off a little bit. I can press on it and hear the tape stick and unstick. It seems to be on there, but makes me nervous. Anyone have the same issue?
Nice side by side comparison video, nice job...
And your Y is crooked ;)
Where did you get the letters from??
How is it that you know the piece will fade without the paint? thanks
Great video! What did you scrub it down with ? Before the paint ?
Just bought a sr5 and am going through mod fever. Going for near TRD Pro poser status.
Make Your Ride Look Like You Want! As Long As Its 4x4 You'll Be Fine
Does anyone know what brand tires are on Tom's 4runner?
Anyone have video out there of installing that lower valance? I have the lowers for the front and rear coming in next week. Any tips would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, and solid video. My TRD grill is coming in with the valances, can’t wait.
t4r.org has right ups with photos of pretty much any modification you can think of
I would buy the replica
Did you use matte black or satin black paint ? And 3 coats ?
Can you recommend one without the holes? Looking to get this, but with that clean look.
Search "TSO Pro Grill", they have an option that is just the bar style grill without the holes
Can you do pro grille in a SR5 model? Or does it have to be only done on a PRO TRD?
Yes. You can use these on the standard SR5 Base, Premium, or Limited trims.
What is that lower bumper valance and where’s it from
OEM TRD Pro black valance from Toyota
Did you paint what was the silver bumper part black?
Zach Peat It looks that way. Looks like both vehicles have the bumper painted black.
Did you guys paint the front valences?
Mark lemerond nope we both got the TRD Pro black valances from Toyota and swamped them out
Nice thanks for this.
Does anyone know if this works for the 2020?
It should, a seller told me it did. Installing this weekend on my 2021 trd off road premium.
Will this fit on a 2016 Limited?
Good job my friend 👍👍
🤙
Does the pro rack fit a regular 4 runner same year
Yes
River Sports huh? Ya'll in Knoxville?
Looks great
So, what’s the price difference between this and the OEM?
OEM was about $300 more expensive last I checked
Yo!!! I am in Columbus. Go bucks! Looking to do this too. Would you be down to help? Would provide beer and pizza haha
Would this fit a 2015 Limited grill? Im looking to convert my limited to a TRD looking trim.
Can you get this grille at the dealership and install it for you? Instead of buying it on ebay or amazon and have to install it myself ?
Yes. The dealership will be willing to do modifications for you using OEM parts. Just know that they will also charge you $$$$$ to do so
@@StraightFaces thanks !
this is an install on the 2019 4Runner correct?
Alexander Gold the 4Runner has been the same body style since 2014 so this would work for any year afterwards too
StraightFaces my understandings is that the 2014-2019 4Runner pro grill doesn’t fit with the 2020 model though.
Alexander Gold have you confirmed this or only seen it from comments? I'm ready to pull the trigger on this mod but I have a 2020 and I've been trying to confirm if it will work or not.
Taylor Boe I’ve read it on multiple 4Runner forums and from multiple sites that sell this aftermarket kit - it doesn’t fit the 2020 without you having to cut in to your front
Did you use that same trim paint for the lower valance?
spencer weathers No paint that’s the black TRD Pro valance
Go buckeyes
Spend 50K on a 4 Runner, im spending an extra couple hundred to get OEM 🤷♂️
Totally fair. I didn’t spend anywhere near 50k but I get your point
Everything is cool and dandy till you go rocking climbing and leave a Y behind sewhere. #toota
I'm always looking for a little T & A
I’ll be buying OEM. The aftermarket ones look like crap after a year or two
Why didn’t you just factory match it,fill in those holes and keep the letters off . it looks so much better and everyone knows it’s a Toyota anyway . That’s what i did
Toyota4runner TrdPro16 Just personal preference. Do what you like!
Your voice is too quiet compared to the loud and annoying intro song. I think OEM style looks better and more aggressive, but that's just me.
Noted, thanks
After the mid 90's, aren't the newer 4 runners for moms? 🤣
No. 5th gens 4runners are for men with chest hair. Sorry bud.
How about if you want a TRD Pro, buy one. Stop faking the funk
Pretty sure it’s just the dealers choice to put the grill on if they want. It’s just a heritage grill that’s optional from the parts department. Not sure why people get so butthurt about this
Michael Myers Maybe because it's often around $10,000 more for only around $3000 of upgrades that may not even be what the owner wants to have long term, so why would someone throw away that money when they could use it to make the vehicle exactly how they want it?
Taylor Boe if you think the difference between an SR5 or Off Road compared to a Pro is $3000, you don’t need to be speaking on Toyota products. ✌🏼
Michael Myers I didn't Say SR5 you did. And the difference from an off road to a pro is definitely not worth the markup. But let's say hypothetically that it is. You're still saying people should pay that extra markup for a bunch of upgrades they may not want or may still want to change, all on the basis of not "faking it" lol. You're shaming people for not paying thousands of dollars more to get the grill they want, when they know (as proved by this video and many others) that they can use that saved money and get the changes they specifically want instead of forking over money for what the dealer puts on. And I'm the dumb one? You're a joke dude.
Taylor Boe look, it’s simple. The Pro comes with the Pro grill, no other model does. It is what makes a Pro stand out amongst the others, so the initial comment stands...if you want a Pro, get one. If not, stop faking the funk. Nobody likes a poser!
You called it a truck... lol
It is body on frame after all. And if having a bed makes a vehicle a truck does that mean a Honda Ridgeline is more of a truck than body on frame SUVs like 4Runners / Land Cruisers? Lol just my 2 cents
@@StraightFaces 😆 Honda Ridgeline haha. You win!!!
@@thomasbessey998 I have a Ridgeline. What's wrong with them?
Why create a fake pro? I don’t get this desire to have a knockoff.
Has nothing to do with trying to make a “knock off” TRD Pro. A TRD Pro is about $10k more than a Trail or Off Road and if you plan on modifying your 4Runner at all then the TRD Pro is just wasted money especially if you plan to upgrade the suspension. The TRD Pro is best for people who do not plan to modify their vehicles at all. Also I think most people would agree that the heritage grill with the “Toyota” letters is just a better looking front end anyways. This isn’t a 4Runner exclusive thing either, upgrading grills is a common mod for most vehicles especially trucks.
StraightFaces upgrading grills is a common mod but upgrading to a factory look of a higher end version is making a knock off. I get not opting for a pro due to mods but then why copy it’s look? That’s like people lifting a 2 wheel drive. Sure it looks like a 4x4 but is it?
In the Toyota community it’s just a preferred look. Toyota offers TRD Pro grills for Tundras, Tacomas, and 4Runners from their own parts department for customers to have the option of how they want their vehicles to look. If you look at the truck community I’d say more than half who upgrade go with higher trim grills over aftermarket grills because they’re better quality and they just look better. The real question is why you’re butt hurt about what other people do to their vehicles lol
Didn’t know u speak for the Toyota community. I know Toyota sells them in the parts department and some dealers put them on themselves and sell it as a heritage package. Doesn’t mean I understand the want to pass it off as something it’s not. U don’t see people modding up a f150 to look like a raptor. Not trying to troll your page watched the video thought it was informative about the install but the question is, why are YOU butt hurt about a comment? Do u feel personal about it cuz ur knock off looking pro?
Lmao what?? Tons of F-150 owners buy the raptor grill you’re just making shit up now. More than Toyota guys do the TRD Pro grill for sure. Google it! Thanks for watching the video though man. I don’t see anything coming from this I just tried to help out and inform. Peace!
