A small guide to the Wiccan form of Lammas/Lughnassah as part of the wheel of the year. Including associations and how you can celebrate it yourself. This is only one form of a much older holiday that was added into the Wiccan tradition.
Please note that I am not able to cover everything in this video but I do try to cover as much as I can.

Cailleach is pronounced "Kai-lock" or "K-eye-lock", it is also the word for hag and witch in modern irish!
Not gonna lie... it really hit me how July is a winter month in the southern hemisphere. I always knew that the seasons were flipped but I never thought about the months!
I love being Wiccan. There are so many reasons to celebrate.
As I am now including my boyfriend and children in sabbats and witchy holidays, I appreciate the more inofrmative videos like this. You tend to be rather midline, not making things about following Redes or laws, thus making things friendly for witches like myself. Thank you for that. Keep being awesome and sharing your wealth of information!
Lammas is my favorite festival. It was the first festival I celebrated after becoming Pagan and this time of year has always been a favorite of mine, the beginning of autumn. In my area we don’t grow a lot of wheat, at least not anymore. Hay is our number one agricultural crop and beef cattle the number one livestock commodity. Hay is essential to the survival of the cattle through the winter. By mid to late August the last of the hay is usually put up. I always include a mini hay bale on my Lammas altar to give thanks for the hay crop. Although I don’t have cattle, I do have other small livestock and know all to well how miserable things get when we run out of hay before spring arrives!
We celebrate with a outside feast around a campfire with friends and family. I always make zucchini bread, which is sweet bread using zucchini squash. Usually using squash from my own garden. I try to use as much from my own garden as possible and get as much locally as I can. I do this all the time, but make a special effort for this meal. We have blackberry wine from a local winery and cap off the weeks festivities with a trip to a local agricultural fair. Hope you enjoy your Lammas! Start some traditions!
It is going to be my first festival this year IK it's time for litha but it's raining already .💖💖
The calendar I was just looking at says "blood ritual, animal or human sacrifice" Do you include a sacrifice?
This is my first holiday as a witch too! I enjoyed a night under the stars, and tomorrow I'm going to have a picnic in the woods. Thank you for sharing your story 💛
I love the idea of making corn dolls, can you do a tutorial about it?
I'd love this too. If you do can you include places to get the corn from as well? Living in a big city it's not something I've ever seen for sale before.
I second that.
Ah Lammas is actually one of my favorites!! How could it be forgotten?! It's when the garden is the most abundant, I can bake some bread, the weather is great for a picnic lunch or dinner, we could sit long into the night around a fire hanging out with friends and drinking beer, enjoying how green and lush everything is on a forest walk, etc.
Thank you, this was quite in depth! I always look forward to these how to celebrate videos as well as your seasonal altar videos!!
When you said Vervain my cat's attention went to the computer and the video, her name is Vervain. :)
Good video.
I think it was amazing that you explained that Lammas and Lughnasadh come from two different cultures💖 I celebrate Lughnasadh being Welsh with Irish ancestors and I get so happy when people become more educated with Celtic culture because it has meshed into other cultures celebrations, which theres nothing wrong with that but it's good to know the origin💖 this video is amazing, I really would love to see your channel grow bigger💖 many blessings🌒🌕🌘
Lammas, the forgotten holiday. ;P Thanks for sharing your research!
Edit: Celebrating Lammas with a Celiac husband will be a real creative challenge to me this year. Maybe I should make that video.
My friend I'm celebrating with this year is Celiac as well. I've been trying to plan around that too. :)
Do not ever apologize for trying your best. People can't respect and appreciate the fact that you put so much of yourself in these videos then fuck them you're doing great please keep the videos coming
This was extremely helpful!! I’m a new witch (elemental, I also use runic magic) and I’ve been wanting to celebrate some holidays with my friends!! Knowing that Lammas bread is SUPPOSED to be shared in folklore is great to know for this purpose!
@HearthWitch: "A little bit of a disclaimer, In this little video, I'm not going to be able to explain absolutely everything to do with this festival"
***proceeds to talk for 40 minutes and creates the best documentary about Lughnasadh on the internet...."***
Hearth, this was a well organised and very informative video, especially for new Pagans. It's quite evident that you have done your research. Love your enthusiasm. Thanks so much!!!!
your videos are so helpful! I’ve been practising for just over a year now and i’ve been extremely unmotivated for some reason recently. This video has made me so excited to celebrate!! 💖
I’ve never commented before but your videos have become the number one most helpful tool for my witchy path. You explain everything so wonderfully. I watched this video from start to finish and then restarted it to take notes! I’ve been making a Grimoire “draft” in my notes on my phone before I commit to putting pen to paper and I just wanted to thank you so much for being so so so helpful!!!!
Hiya. I'm glad it's not just me that takes notes ☺ it's great to hear not just ways to celebrate but also the context and history of the traditions too.
I'm so glad they are a help, that means so much xx
But as long as you can make some sense of them that's what matters. I know what you mean tho, most of my notes at uni ended up in some strange code!
AMAZING! Thank you sister. I love and adore you and your content 🖤🖤🖤🧝♀️🧚♀️🧞♀️
This is the BEST information about this fire festival!! I have been searching for an interesting and informative video to share with my students from the Caribbean.. thank you kindly ❤️
I've become absolutely addicted to your channel.
Thankfully I can celebrate in the broom closet and outside because my birthday just so happens to be on the same day. I'll just say it's my birthday party. Lol
You do you. Haha I love that you always say that. It’s so true.
August 1 always makes me a little sad, because there’s hints of fall already- summer birds are gone already, crickets start. Maybe what’s needed is a festival to celebrate and mark the occasion. Will pay more attention next Lughnasa. And I need the ritual for protection of livestock! Very informative, thanks Hearth.
Anyone else have an overwhelming urge to add dried rose petals in their practice for Lammas? I'm only at 15:19 so I'm not sure if she mentions it, but it's like I'm being told to add them, so you best believe I will.
I was born on Lammas August 1st
Han that’s so cool!
We can’t have bonfires because we live in the desert and it’s too dangerous. Also it’s too hot and dry to be in front of a fire anyway. So we cook our feast at a friend’s house on a BBQ grill. We write wishes on Oak chips and sprinkle them over the hot coals, then cook our feast together over the grill.
I am American for context. But I just love listening to your voice. I love how you say “year”
So helpful, as always! Thanks!
Wicca is such a beautiful religion.
Thank you and loving your hair! Blessed be!!!
This is, as always, so informative. Thank you!
Another great video about the sabbats! Love it! 😘
Wonderful video! This year will be my first time celebrating Lammas.
I LOVE how thorough and giving you are with your knowledge. You've given me so much inspiration for my first Lammas. Thank you! 🖤🌽
Love your videos, very informative and much appreciated! Thank you!🙏🙏🙏
I really love how in depth you go in your videos, they help me so much!!
Your videos are always so informative. I love how you also give info on things to do for if you're itbc
I love your How to Videos!! ✨💫
this video is amazing! I love to watch videos about Sabbats whenever one is near and this one is the most informative and best one I’ve seen! I’ve been Wiccan for over a couple years and I learned something new about Lammas today!
This year I'm making mushroom soup bread bowls and salmon that I caught this summer. I may even steep fireweed flowers in some wine. I'm so excited! I also started painting festive flags to string together in a banner. I'll add a few every year :)
I loved this video! I looked at a few before I found this and yours is by far the best at explaining so many aspects. Thank you for taking the time to make this ❤️
Thanks for all the information on this sabbat, I am really excited for the wheel to turn so I can make my altar.
I am in the middle of working on the Lammas ritual my circle will be doing together. What a great video to energize my work, your videos are phenomenal. Thank you for all you do.
Wonderful, helpful info. Thank you so much! 🌻💚💛🧡🤎🌻
I LOVE YOUR SHIRT!!!! ❤️💚❤️🐍🐍🐍
Thanks for this! This will be my first sabbat and I’m really excited to be celebrating! Lots of ideas to try 😍
Your voice is so soothing, thank you so much, I was looking for small ideas I could do today and this is exactly what I needed! Also, your hair is amazing! Happy Lammas, blessed be!
Thanks so much for this Hearth! I love your videos they are so informative and take the intimidation out of witchcraft! 💞
Such a great video! Thank you! BBx 💜
For anyone who wants a quick spelling guide for the deities section of the video, here is the list she provided. They took forever for me to find so I hope this helps someone lol:

Demeter
Persephone
Loki
Thor
Odin
Baal
Ceres
Eire
Ceridwen
Inanna
Ishtar
Kor
Dumuzid
Adonis
A lot of great information! Thanks🌾👩🌾
This is one of the best videos on the holiday I've ever watched. You offer so many wonderful, meaningful and approachable ways to honor the season. Thank you for sharing
Really enjoyed the video, really engaging and interesting. Thank you.
I've been on my spiritual journey for a couple years now and I ❤ the seed gathering. I am very earth connected so this really touches my heart. Love the video with all the information shared.
The most influential part of my solitary learning so far has been seeing both how the Clergy and the solitaries celebrate the High Days. These are both supportive and inspirational as I craft my personal rites. Thank you all!
Reminder for Myself:
Dream Work/Magick 35:38
Thanks! you always deliver! Enjoy the sabbat. XO
First! Love your Sabbat series
Another incredible video Hearth- thank you for blessing us with all this helpful information! This is still a big festival in Northern Ireland- at Navan Fort (an ancient Celtic seat of power and magic) we celebrate it- they have people dressed in ancient gear and “woad” blue paint, circlets of flowers, drummers, and light many bonfires shaped like symbols from Celtic myths to bring blessings to all present. They have owls, crystals, live music, ice cream etc... thoroughly recommend if you ever visit us around that time :) xoxo
I hate living in the middle of the desert. I can’t do any of the fun witchy things like walking in the forest collecting berries and planting😫! Hahaha thank you for the video I am so excited to celebrate my first Lammas Day! 🥰🌙✡️
Just a couple of ideas for witchy desert things to do. Plant succulents and rock garden , lavender love sun and dryness. You can also dry things in the sun- buy at store and prepare at home. Hope you have fun
We have John Barely corn here in rural North Western Pa🌾🌽
Thank you Hearth!
Great video!!! Thanks!!!
As a pagan sister, I'm so happy that I have a wonderful Father Figure in Lugh. Truly Lughnasadh is one of the best of the three Harvest festivals to give thanks. The three Harvest festivals Lughnasadh, Mabon, and Samhain are basically a extended Thanksgiving long before it existed. May you have a blessed Lughnesadh dear sister. ☀️🌙🌻🌾
omg when i was a young lad i learned a song from raymond Bucklands complete book of witch craft about John Barely corn... the version i learned is different from what youll find on youtube. and Meadow sweet is an old fashioned herb most people today dont know much about. im happy to share the lyrics for john barelycorn if anyone is interested
Excellent info
I love your star shelf
John Barleycorn is associated with Whiskey..
Especially in America...where we brew moonshine
Thank you blessed be 🌺❤️
I love your accent.
Loved this video! Would you be able to do a video about hoodoo and making powders- such as floor powders for prosperity and negativity banishing? Also do you have any knowledge of traditions around house spirits/faeries? ☺
Impressive knowledge ☺️
Thank you 😊
You speak so well. Thank you for sharing Hearth. I quite enjoy watching your channel.
Thank you for all that cheers 2 you
Awesome video! Would've loved to see the spelling of the god/goddesses, so I can look them up later.
Thanks for this extremely well-done and informative video. I've been a witch trying to celebrate this holiday for decades, but it's been a very difficult one to connect with. Maybe it's because all this time I've lived in the city. I'd bake some bread or so, but...the only thing I know about this time of year in the city is that it's bloody hot and gross outside and I don't wanna do very much. Bleah.
BUT...I just moved to a rural community in Washington State, USA and this is our first Sabbat in our new home. In the country, the connection to this holiday has changed. I am carefully marking what's active in the plant and animal kingdoms here right now. The swallows swoop and fly constantly over our field, and so do the eagles and hawks and owls (I've never seen so many raptors before!). They all have babies to feed, so they're all pretty busy out there hunting. Yarrow and clover is flowering in abundance. Best of all are the BERRIES. This region is known for it's berry farms, so we have a plethora of blackberries, raspberries, and blueberries everywhere to celebrate with.
NOW this holiday has hit Home and shall forever be special. This year is our First Harvest of decades worth of work getting ourselves to our new farm. Lammas/Lughnasdha will be a feast of thanksgiving for all our blessings, and a pledge of love to this land to keep it well. May you and all the beloved children of the Earth Mother feel the same blessings I have been granted. Blessed Be, so Mote it be.
Now is the time for me to be working with crystals and I am reading a beginner's guide to about crystals and keeping a journal about each crystal and I started with the Black Obsidian Arrow Head Crystal. And I will be doing each crystal for a week that way I know if is is working for me and so far with this crystal and it has only been a few days and I find myself connecting to it quite a lot.
As I write this it's almost Lammas and it'll be my first Lammas I never celebrated it before
thank You🌹
I have heard of that corn, here in rural Pennsylvania
John Barley kinda makes me think of Johnny Appleseed 😗 I wonder if there's a correlation...
Oooo same here!
Johnny Appleseed was a real man, but he only planted apple trees to take advantage of early US laws that stated you own land if you planted enough trees on the land. Johnny Barleycorn sounds much nicer in my opinion. haha
@@catecoxunderwood1472 Ooh 😶 I didn't know that. Thanks for educating me 😋
Damn I missed it this year! Can I still celebrate it a bit late? I've been waiting for it but wasn't home
great info! thank u for doing ur homework on this holiday and sharing. definately gonna use some of ur ideas! but i have to ask-i LOVE ur lip color. can u give me the name of tge lipstick ur wearing?? thanks so much!
I think it was Lime Crime Cougar xx
I wanna see u set up ur lammas altar..i lov ur videos emensly
So if I do not choose to work with the Fay should I still leave something out for them so that they won't be mischievous?
Fourth 😁
Really helpful, I'm making notes about wicker men in particular. I could also re watch the film although it's a slightly different vibe....
Also I need to plan a gluten free way to celebrate wheat and bread...
Also the witchlings want to know what is hanging from your pentagram Hearth? One says feathers and the other says hair (😮)
They're feathers. I found one feather earrings and decided to let it fill the gap before I add something else in its place xx
I will let her know. I did say it wasn't likely to be your hair 😉
It looks good anyway. I'd like to add more feathers around the house so I might try something similar....
Whatever you do, watch the 70's one, not the Nic Cage one.
Oh god! Don't worry, I only make such mistakes once 😂
even tho the deity i work with isnt associated with lughnassah can i still incorporate offerings to her during this sabbat
Are you in Southern hemisphere or in Southern hemisphere? What's about the equator countries?
can it be crystal skulls and decor skulls like from michaels
Do you also have a blog?
I’ve always said calleach as kylie-ak
the band traffic has a song ...john barley corn must die .based on the old songs .
Can i ask How long is a sabbat altar ideally to be kept up? Until the next sabbat? Another question is, what do we do with the food offerings after such time?
I generally keep it up till I am ready to decorate for the next Sabbat, and food offerings are often buried to return them to the earth xx
@@HearthWitch thank you.
I feel like I just betrayed everything I've ever learned and should take some time off from my practice. We had to put my boyfriend's familiar down this morning as she had become viscous and began randomly attacking me to the point of causing me to have to have surgery to put my calf muscle and skin back together.
Is it appropriate to celebrate brigid for this holiday?
Been wondering the same thing.
👍
How about Banana Bread?
my research said handfasting is done during lughnassah
So, is Lughnasadh an ok time to start decorating for autumn?
Natural Disaster any time is a great time to decorate for autumn! 🍂
@@liaruth9795 So much truth in so few words👏👏
Natural Disaster 😂
I did pancakes swam
