    if anything, a bow would give the animal the best chance. They can hear the bowstring twang, and the broad head opens them up pretty good, so they bleed out quick, making it the most "humane" way. I know I'm gonna get pounced for this statement, but even still, half of these people on here find killing an animal taboo but will eat their Filet Mignon without a second thought.

    I myself hunt polar bears. Us inuit we eat the meat and use the hide as pants for the cold winters. But its a shame to see people hunt just for the hide. We don't only think of our selves, we share the meat with our own community members. We are very manageable when it comes to polar bear hunting in Nunavut. My ancestors have been hunting polar bears for thousands or years. Everyone has there own perspective on saying things, but I wish they can see how hard it is to live in a vast and hard environment. We have been living off the animals for thousands of years and so have your ancestors but in a different environment.

      More than likely he gave the meat to the village. That is how exotic hunting works the trophy hunter kills and gets the hide or horn and the locals get the meat.

    • @sarajamesaerial
      @sarajamesaerial 9 лет назад +3

      I hope the meat did go to the locals. Wouldn't mind the hide going to them either, since they would probably use it for something more than a rug or wall décor.

    FINALLY A VIDEO ABOUT THE POLAR BEARS WITH SOME TRUTH

  • @dragonslayer6766
    @dragonslayer6766 10 лет назад +9

    Christopher you do realize a bear can easily weigh 1,000 pounds right? There is no way he could get 300 pounds of bear meat back to the states (tat weight is after field dressing). In most of those cases the hunter donated that meat to the villagers which could keep them fed through the winter. Also back in 1967 sea ice melt was not as bad and there were many nuisance bears, and at least give him credit he did it with a re curve bow where the bear had as much chance of killing them as they did killing him.

    • @michaelpcooksey5096
      @michaelpcooksey5096 Год назад

      Sounds like good management. People needing the meat got it. Folks wanting adventure got it. Villagers did not get the bear skin ... but with no effort expended ... they no doubt appreciated the meat. The polar bear is something I never want to meet up close. Thank you for the video.

    • @RG-tt1ru
      @RG-tt1ru 6 месяцев назад

      The only thing I disagree with is your saying that the bear had as good a chance of killing them as the other way around. It was the *two* (or more) against *one* match, one side having the advantage of killing without physical contact, including having a rifle nearby.

    Bear meat sucks. Don't know why anybody bothers shootin' 'em. For everybody concerned about the endangered species aspect of this, keep in mind, this clip was made in 1967. For those bugged by the guys tracking via aircraft, yep, gotta agree. That's definite bullshit. If you're gonna hunt (and I do), get in the critter's natural environment and try and fool 'em at their own game. Chances are, you'll come home empty handed way more often than you come home with meat.

    By 1967 most large bears were shot off the Russian coast in international waters although the Russians didn't agree with it. While killing the bear was dangerous the flying and landings were a lot worse. There is very little area on the ice pack that is actually suitable to land. The negativity by a lot of posters is from ignorance or just plain anti -hunting bias. -

    Like most bow hunts for Dangerous Game like Lion, you definitely need a gun backup which he had. Back in 1967 the re- curve bows were the best bows available the same type Fred Bear used in his well known hunting trips. Exciting to watch but I would not want to be that close to a Polar Bear to kill with a bow. Eskimos historically hunted Polar Bear with their crude Bows and Spears I am sure some of them lost their lives doing so.

    be mindful that this video was a WHILE ago, not saying its right that all he took was the pelt. if they did end up up travelling via. dogsled they could have brought back some meat for the village at least. like i said the ideals of hunting and conservation are very different between today and 30+ years ago. As a life long resident of the arctic, most(key word) hunters i know are respectful of the endangered lists, and do everything they can to waste as little as possible. usually the only time you hear of a bear being killed is if it has endangered people by either raiding a camp or coming into town looking for food.

They make out it was a noble hunt and they were in danger themselves, but they had another back-up shit house with a high powered rifle. I'm just glad times have changed a bit, but trophy hunting is still alive and well today around the world.

      Julian Solorzano How do you know? He said explicitly that they brought the pelt back to the plane. Nothing about the meat.
      IMHO it's ok to hunt not endangered species for meat. It's fucked up to hunt animals for trophies - regardless if they are endangered or not.
