The drums are played by the member called II, there are videos of exclusive interviews as well as visuals of him playing the drums on an account called Drumeo. He's a really talented drummer
What is great about Sleep Token is that the lyrics are incredibly descriptive, but not specific. Meaning they are great at conveying imagery and emotion, but not the subject. Is it a deity? Is it a lover? Is it yourself? And the metaphor's meanings around the subject can then change as a result. So this leaves it to the listener to interpret their meaning for them.
@@bertsteerswimmer Yeah that is the "lore" but nearly every lyric also applies to relationships. Like in Euclid, Vessel is laying beneath tree canopies surrounded by autumn leaves with a diety? Or the person that broke his heart? Both.
@@earthscorcher exactly I’ve seen so many people saying different things about the song and this dude is a therapist he might have a good point about it
With you being a psychotherapist, I beg you to listen to Sleep Token with Jungian alchemical psychology in mind! I love that their lyrics are so multifaceted and can mean anything to anyone; I think that’s what makes music stand out to us as individuals. However, Jungian theories of archetypes, shadows, and the anima are painted all over the lyrics since the beginning, showing enough evidence that solidifies the idea that Vessel has been practicing shadow work and is diving into his unconscious mind. I believe that Vessel is actually confronting the unfiltered and hidden parts of himself (his desires, hates, flaws) in an attempt to love himself wholly. I would be hesitant to conclude this if it was just a few songs that could possibly allude to this theory, but like I said, this language is in every single song of their discography. It’s not the only way to draw meaning from ST, but I believe it’s the intended way the songs were written. Thanks for taking us on the journey! Subbed!
Oooof, complete slam dunk of a comment here. I couldn’t help but see the parallel synchronicities between ST’s music and Jung’s work myself. Could there also be some mirroring of the Eleusinian and Orphic mysteries in here? I can’t help but say… absolutely.
@@BloodlustNightingale I have to say, I’m not familiar with Eleusinian and Orphic mysteries or other ancient cults, but they seem worth looking in to! So thank you! Obviously, ST’s imagery is very cult-like so it would be cool to see if there were any connections. I was looking at ST more psychologically, but now you peaked my interest in learning about cults. I’m happy to know there’s someone out there that thinks about them like I do! I don’t see a lot of comments mentioning the psychotherapy side of it.
Mental health wise they have a lot to offer in a way. Vessel seems to have struggled a lot. I struggled with addictions (ED, SH and alcohol) and I also have BPD. I worked a lot on getting better over the past few years and I have. I a lot of the things that I experienced can be read into the lyrics. Or at least that's what I do. I love that style of songwriting because it allows you to interpret it in your own way.
This trilogy is incredible, honestly the best thing I've ever listened to in my life. Hint: each song tells a different stage in the relationship. So one song can be about great love, and the next song can be about how much he hates her. Thanks for your reaction, I look forward to the next one.
The beauty of art is that the artist's intent and the listener or viewer's interpretation are not needed to be the same thing, so what you get from the lyrics and musical styling is just as valid as the artist's intent! Of course there are people who will tell you what the words may be meaning based off of the lore of the band, but your interpretation is still what you take from the music!
At 7:06 the lyrics actually say: Give up the game and let me in. Genius sometimes got the lyrics wrong and the band unfortunately don't offer lyrics with their records. This in fact would be a great offering we were waiting for. I love your reactions and your facial expression. There is a song on this Album called sugar. If you check this out, look for the live version, for example at Birmingham. Something special is going on on stage there.....
if you like sleep token you should check out Bad Omens, or Dayseeker. hopefully sleep token will be your introduction to metal so we get more metal reactions
You’re on the right track! Their intent is that each listener applies the music to their lives as they see fit. The only member of the band who has given an interview is II the drummer. He’s definitely a student of gospel and worship music, along with many other genres.
YES! Welcome! Worship! I'm so glad you're going on this journey and I can't wait to live vicariously through you as you hear it all for the first time.
I think this song is about addiction. Drugs/alcohol "taking a bite" and consuming him, describing the peace of the high through the first verse but "diamonds for teeth" means that it will ultimately destroy you, no matter how tough you think you are. But when it feels good, it is good and will "Sacrifice" himself by giving in to the poison.
New favourite Sleep Token reaction place! I loved what you've analysed so far. Spot on! This band is a gold mine in terms of lyrical analysis. But you have to enter the rabbit hole from their very beginning.
I can relate to Vessel's lyrics if taken this way. If the woman has teeth as strong as diamonds, she can get through his hardened, pained, and trauma hidden heart. I can see this in myself because I stopped believing that love was a thing. That said, I desperately wanted and needed it. I love all of Sleep Token's songs and the raw emotion that they share. Give Sleep Token's Blood Sport (from the room below) a listen. It is heart wrenching, I feel his pain because I have it too.
As a general thing to consider for your ST journey: Every lyric, every change in their "genre", every little pronunciation, etc. is all extremely deliberate and placed with intent. Vessel (the main guy) is a mastermind. Worship.
I can't wait for you to to unpack the closing track of this album called Blood Sport. First time I heard it, it hit so hard. And I love seeing your view on these lyrics as someone who doesn't know all the lore and details (yet)
"I'm thinking of the garden of Eden and Adam and Eve - it's probably not that but..." Except you were spot on 😂 the third album is literally called Take Me Back To Eden, and it'll all fit together when you arrive there :)
It's funny you mention God and church, one of sleep tokens biggest influence for their sound is gospel music! Especially the drummer, he mentions a few gospel drummers that helped inspire his playing style
You need to see/listen to the live version of this at Wembley from 2023. If you think the drumming is insane on the album version, II goes OFF when he plays this live. The ending is insane and incredible!
This song is seemingly more an obsession to a person or being of sorts. Maybe even the image of a person or being. The talk of “Let me in” would suggest one of two things. Either they know it’s unhealthy and don’t want to continue, or he’s trying to talk himself into my giving in.
I genuinely think this is sleep tempting vessel to give in and let her in after all, she only needs silence and what is the person to the singer? “Silence on sacred shores” And also sleep has this habit of being very seductive but then getting extremely demanding, which is how the song ends.. “TAKE A BITE!”
It seems pretty clear to me that sleep is a female entity and all of his music is about his craving, desire for, and pursuit of her, and the toxicity and desperation there in.
Okay no you're not crazy, I think Vessel uses a lot of religious parallelism. Some of his lyrics reminds me of Blake's poetry. Vessel is a man who's educated and that's all I'll say regarding his identity as a man -- but you're def onto something I think! And II is a marvellous drumer, insane talent.
