Renegade Amphibian Lake Hops and Ocean Beach Landing

- Had a blast riding along with a friend in his Lake Renegade - dubbed the "MegaforceAdventureMobile". The first lake is Lake Cushman, followed by a landing at Copalis Beach, a touch and go at American Lake, a fly-by of Seattle, and a full stop and shut down at Renton (KRNT) via a landing in south Lake Washington. Love Copalis State beach airport. Only place in the contiguous where you can legally land on the beach. I go there every chance I get. Great video.
My first interaction with the Renegade was watching a video on an incident of a pilot who crashed after ignoring many hours worth of good advice. Since then, your videos have made me see what an incredibly capable airplane the Renegade is. Please keep up the good work! I wish I could go for a flight and do some camping!
That AOPA video was great. They used some of this footage and I was happy in their effort to help other pilots learn from his mistakes. Thanks for the kudos!

I remember that tinny sound of "kissing" & "hissing" the water with my 63 LA-4 N1029L from 50 years ago like it was yesterday. Alas, someone sunk 29L in Lake Murray in a not so gentle touchdown. She was salvaged on RUclips, while I teared up.

Ah yes the lake, the only airplane i know of that pitches up when the engine fails.
SeaRey does it, too - most planes with a pusher configuration do thanks in part to the high thrust line.

Very cool. An RC company called Flite Test has a model called the Sea Otter. Always wondered what the original plane was!
Their Sea Otter is loosely based on the Lake aircraft design for sure!
Sensational video! Extremely well filmed and very well edited. It really shows the remarkable versatility of Lake aircraft. Would love to know how you managed the drone footage. Did you stand on the shore controlling it while your friend did some take offs? You must have had it up to full speed to keep up as a Renegade lifts off between 55 & 60 knots, although this one has the vortex generators so maybe 5 knots lower and with just the pilot on board he may have got it airborne at 50 knots. Still that 57.5 mph, so if this is drone filmed then it's getting along at substantial speed. It's really great footage and seamlessly mixed in so the viewer is unaware of how you've done it. So glad you've kept all the sound too and not replaced it with music. 10 out of 10!
Philip Dartnell Thanks! We weren’t ever over 40mph while on step for the drone shots. The drone was flown manually in sport mode in order to keep up. Glad you enjoyed the video!

Great video. Too bad the Renegades got too expensive. Even the La-4-200's of which we had two, became too expensive to buy in the end. Glad we got ours early. Sold both eventually but had years of great adventures ! The La-4-200's were OK but underpowered for operations in the mountains of B.C. Canada.

No. But they are uncommon for people to be looking to buy. As a result, you can find them anywhere from $60k-100k.

@@rodz1999 From what I understand the turbo variants of the Buccaneer and Renegade have some engine problems, but as is the case with most turbocharged aircraft engines. A bit of how they’re operated by their owners and a bit of just how aircraft engines works vs longevity when put under such loads. I’ve heard the 180hp Bucc variant is sometimes a whale to get off of small lakes.
Parts are hit or miss, but you can generally find what you need.
They are however amphibious with retractable gear and an engine that isn’t exactly in your standard location for inspections and work. All of which I’m sure drive up costs a bit.
But the guy I know who owns one loves it and the online groups are pretty passionate.
Saw a guy crash one of these on lake Dora.

That's probably the wide angle lens tricking your eye - it's actually quite a wide ramp
@@RedDevilSquadron that may be the case, the Lake is a nice airplane, at one point a local lake owner expressed interest in trading me for my arrow
You should get your prop balanced. That thing shakes way too much starting and shutting it down.

@@nwpilot1218 Judging by your half witted comment, you obviously don't even know what a dynamic prop balance is, and how it helps reduce vibration in a propeller-driven aircraft. I've recommended one to a few aircraft owners whose engine shook less than half as much as this one, and they thanked me afterwards saying their airplane runs so smooth now. If you choose to have the attitude that you can't learn from someone else and think you're smarter than everyone else, then I digress -- you really can't fix stupid!

Before I do a prop balance: #1, do a run up, adjust the mixture and idle, #2, do a compression test.
