3RZ Swapped 1st Gen Toyota 4Runner Walkaround | NEW PROJECT!

- This is a 1987 Toyota 4Runner with a 3RZ swap from a 2000 4Runner! The 3RZ-FE swap replaces the factory 22RE and gives us a healthy boost of 50 horsepower and takes us from 2.4L to 2.7L! It still uses the W56 transmission but is mated to the 3RZ's W59 bellhousing. It also retains the RF1A transfer case. Besides aftermarket motor mounts and custom wiring, this is basically a drop in swap. Sweet!
The interior is really clean and has the highly desired altimeter/inclinometer! I can't wait to start building this truck, and I can't wait to show you guys what I have planned for it.

I started tearing apart the interior to kick off the project. Check it out! ruclips.net/video/W2kYoal7k10/видео.html
So I have a sudden interest in 1st gen 4-Runners then this pops up! I’m jealous
I got lucky with this one. I was just telling my friend I need a 3RZ for my pickup and then this popped up on Facebook.
@@RM_Garage I have a 3vze engine from a 1990 4 runner it only has 2,000 miles on it I’m trying to swap over to the 3.4
@@RM_Garage Yep I got the 3RZ bug too! My pickup is pretty hammered and hasn’t ran good since the previous owners, got a good tranny though so considering the swap.
Super excited for all the 4Runner adventures to come!!
Same!
You need to run the 22RE oil sending unit on the 3rz to get the gauge to work.
Thanks! I was reading about that. Appreciate it!
No wonder my oil pressure gauge hasn’t worked since I put a brand new 3.0 in my 2nd gen
Nice! I have an 86 turbo with a regular non turbo 22r swap and a 5speed transmission. I've had it since 2010 it was a fresh resto and tons of fun to drive. Although slow it did 80 eventually. Staying tuned to your channel for inspiration.
Thanks for watching!
Sick!!! Looks like the rear panel was scratched by a bear!!!
Haha right? It looks like Wolverine attacked it
Keep the ifs and go with a long travel set up from blazeland ... truck looks clean as hell
Thanks!
Wow very impressive bro, you scored for sure!
Thanks! Totally scored!
Clean truck. Those wheels look like street locks , just a stronger outer lip not a real bead lock
Nice! I got a 88 runner with a 3rz as well! Can't go wrong!
Nice find ‼️I own a 86 xtra cab which I did a solid axle swamp and three link the front with some king coil overs is the 3rz swamp better than a 5vz??
Thanks! I own an 88 xtra cab that's solid axle swapped too 😀
I think that the 3RZ is easier for a 22RE truck. It's a good upgrade compared to the 22RE but I wouldn't say it's better or worse than a 5VZ. The 5VZ makes 40-50 more HP that a 3RZ. Both motors (Actually all 3) are very good!
every time I open the driver's side door on my ' 88 4Runner and hear that noise. I think of that line from dumb and dumber, want to hear the most annoying sound in the world? 🤣
Love the vids brotha. Did you figure out how to get the rear window to roll up and down from the tailgate ? I have the same issue on my first Gen and can’t figure it out.
take me for a ride zaddy
yayaya
Did they not change the oil sender on the engine that reads and activates just the dummy light (Like it was in the 2000 4runner) to a gauge cluster that shows actual oil pressure (like the sr5 that's in your 4runner)
If they didn't it fried the oil pressure readout on your gauge...
Also is that a V6 4runner or Tacoma airbox, that someone modified to accept the air flow meter that the 3rz uses?
Thanks
The oil sender is currently just temporarily wired into the 4wd light. Need to get a 22RE sender and wire it in.
I'll have to check on the airbox. This thing runs now, got the transmission completely rebuilt and made a series on that! Should hit the road soon.
@@RM_Garage awesome I'm wrapping up my 3rz swap in my 85 4runner at the moment. 😁
Is it night and day compared to a 22r/22re? Seriously considering the 3rz swap in my 82 4x4
It is quite a difference compared to a 22re, yeah.
Hey I’m trying to do the same swap, just wondering about the motor mount, can you tell me more about it?
I’m doing the same swap in a 87 pick up. Any tips on wiring the body harness up? Lol.
I didn't do the swap, but I'm going to be checking out the wiring to make sure they did it right. Might make a video for that.
It looks like you have a 3.4 air box on this truck. I know youve said you didnt do this swap but does the box appear to have been modified to fit into that spot?
Im doing a 97 3rz swap into to my 94 pickup and am trying to figure out the filter/box setup because i will have to pass the smog ref in oct.
It was a 3.4 box in there, yeah.
@@RM_Garage Do you know what intake hose was used?
I have the same swap on my 3rd gen pickup. Wondering what fan shroud you are using. Been running mine without for now.
It’s a 22RE radiator and fan shroud
@@RM_Garage Thanks for the reply.
Hi I have a 88 v6 it’s been dead in the driveway for a long time I have always wanted to redo it this is the third engine I am the second owner I just Love driving it long story short I wanted it swap out for a new 2018 engine and transmission the original engine was just weak any input on upgrades would help o ya I live in California thank you I will watch all your videos on this. JoP
My advice would be to do your research on the swap and see if anyone else has done it and start making a checklist of what you need. That's a super expensive swap and going to be very involved to make it pass CA smog. I would personally go to a 3.4 5vze. Much easier.
Nice truck how much did you pay for it?
I think I paid $3500 if I remember correctly
Damn where you find that deal?
I got really lucky on Facebook Marketplace 😄
How cheap was it? I’m looking for one in the next couple months
I paid 3000 or 3500 for it, I believe.
@@RM_Garage nice, my daily driver actually had total engine failure and I just happened to have perfect timing and found a perfect condition 89 for 5k with a bunch of extra parts too
Do you know what kind of front bumper that is on it?
It was a Smittybilt, old school one
@@RM_Garage Was afraid you'd say that only guys really making 1st gen stuff is ARB but its way to bulky looking for me, oh well, you lucky bastard!
So it’s a 2000 4runner 3RZ? What oil pan is it running? And are you still IFS? I am really interested in doing this swap but not much is available for ifs 4Runners/pickups.
It’s a 2000 or 2001 3RZ, coil on plug generation of the engine. The oil pan for IFS needs to be changed to a rear sump and can be bought from Toy Only Swaps.
This truck does have IFS but it will be SASd anyway so the front diff was removed to fit the motor.
@@RM_Garage so even with the rear sump the motor won’t clear with the ifs in it?
@@MrJuanv08 It will. The kit from Toy Only Swaps will clear IFS.
What kind of gas milage you get with it
I've only drove it around 60 miles since I got it. The transmission is blown, it's one of the reasons it was cheap. Not too sure!
