  • This BMW was bought broken down, it needed to be towed and showed no signs of life. In this video you'll see us completely restore it mechanically to not only run but get all its power back.
    This is an F30 328i with the N20 engine and we tear into the engine and turbo to restore it. We also cover a few lessons along the way including showing how important timely oil changes are for the longevity of a car. We compare a car with 100K miles to one at 150K miles and describe how they failed and why one lasted so much longer than the other.
    If you are interested in the kit that costs under $150 to restore your timing components on your N20 engine you can get it here (affiliate):
    bit.ly/3aUhix1
    I would also recommend a new crank seal and oil pan gasket (affiliate):
    bit.ly/3cfKcYH

    I've already created through DIYs on the procedures shown here, you can find them here:
    • I Saved This Cheap F30...
    • Watch Me Resurrect Thi...
    In the next video we will restore the paint and interior.

    I work in a shop and we have done a bunch of these. There is a “trick” to installing the crank bolt that will help you not bend the flywheel pin and\or potentially stretch the chain. This tip comes from the guys in Germany who work on these things (friend of a friend). All you do is lock everything down and torque the crank bolt to the 110nm and then go only 90 degrees. THEN pull the flywheel pin and cam tools (leaving only the flywheel teeth holder) and then go the rest of the 180 degrees angle torque. This way you can’t bend the pins and tools and it won’t stretch the chain. Works like a charm, just did an x3 this way this past weekend, Great content!

    Quality N20 content 🙏🏽. Have a 320i that I acquired in 2018 at 186k KMs, now on 209k KMs. No history when I got it (silly I know), had sat for a long while (filthy), but motor made no funny noises, zero fluid leaks, zero smoke. Haven't used it much (not my daily) but changed the oil 5 times in my ownership. Looking to do the chain-guide job soon 👍🏽.
    Must say the N20 doesn't give confidence like the EA113 (BWA) in my daily drive Audi A3. While that also has timing-chain/cam-belt issues that thing loooooves getting banged on lol !

    • @igotaction
      @igotaction 2 года назад

      Keep them in groups, it might take multiple tray but if you group them in sections you can deduce what goes where first by number of bolts, then length and if you have to go to RealOEM and you can get lengths and a micrometer and measure but after a while you just know

    @Vehicular DIY, 2012 F10 528xi, N20 i4. Timing chain failed while driving didn't have the money to fix before hand... made it to 156k... so far pulled valve cover and scoped into pistons are healthy from the top so far no indication of bent valves, pulling head to verify anything deeper. Any opinion on best option for garage work, pull motor or drop down subframe, to get to the pan? and any direct guide on dropping subframe if that's the case? also needing to do the change the turbo. same question with your other video, does subframe need to be dropped for access to it/downpipe etc?

    • @igotaction
      @igotaction Год назад

      If you are pulling head or doing the turbo with timing chain, pull engine. Very easy, torque converter, bellhousing bolts, engine mounts, bottom clamp on DP, and the compressor can stay connected with the car, harness comes out with engine and DME, can be done in a couple hours. But you have plugs out, how does the engine spin manually on the crank? Any binding? The question is did it fail in big enough chunks it didn't clog the pickup tube and spin a bearing like our white one.

      It used to be fine back 20+ years ago before they started pushing the power limits and went to fake syn oils. Grp III/III+ was used by bmw in early naughts, and even now one has to be picky to get real PAO or ester based syn oils. Although Shells GTL is considered grp III it really isn’t and should hav its own new class. Say VI? It uses natural gas and synthesizes it using the same Fischer-Tropsch method as PAO, but then goes the hydrogenation further purification. It really is a great new oil tech. Even still viscosity matters. Higher the mileage I’d go higher in viscosity provided on environment. Min for bmw is 0w-40 and high mileage I like motul sport ester 5w50- esp summer. IMHO

    Either the oil feed line ruined the turbo - or this could be avoided. I guess you havent built oil pressure before starting the car with new empty oil feed line. 30 seconds cranking without start so turbo does not spool and oil feed lines get rid of air and fill the chamber with turboshaft. Only like 3-4 seconds while running the turbo dry and it is done. Also people dont understand that even while replacing the turbo and injecting oil into turbo shaft the air trapped in oil feed line will blow that thin oil film from shaft and ruin the turbo again.

    • @igotaction
      @igotaction 2 года назад

      Wastegate flapper was the cause of the turbo failure, no oil in turbo inlet or exhaust side, no oil coming from exhaust valve stem seals, just worn flapper bushing and flapper with new oil line with check valve.
