CLICKBAIT title. The video was interesting but the Sydney tower segment did not appear until the end. The tower did not fall. It was still a serious problem for the residents but the video title is totally misleading. Most of the segments were very interesting and a lot more interesting than the Sydney tower.
also not "the" Sydney Tower just "a" Sydney tower. Silly titling ruining an otherwise quite interesting doco.
100% agree. When people hear Sydney Tower, the think of What was originally called Centrepoint Tower. They didn’t want to say : " Sydney apartments sudden fall" because it’s not as prominent or prestigious like the known tourist attraction. By the way, the apartment block in Sydney didn’t suddenly fall or collapse , like the apartment block in a Miami ( surf side condo ) , for example… @ Banjay Science , you are one bunch of sleazy, headline grabbing wannabe documentary makers, but can’t even get simple names or facts right before you publish your story. 🤥
It was called Mascot Towers.
The tower in Mascot had structural cracks, identified as inadequate reinforcing coverage soon after completion but the buck kept being passed until liability was limited, in other words it was poorly built and poorly inspected. The whole thing was a sham as is most of the building industry in Australia.
Showing the Centrepoint tower in the thumb nail is clickbait as that is an engineering marvel that has been copied in other cities and is maintained to the highest standards.
When the airport, know as Kingsford Smith, was opened there was no suburb called Mascot and it is quite a journey from the centre of Sydney, NSW, Australia.
@@seanworkman431 Mascot is just 4.4 miles from central Sydney and it takes 17 minutes to travel there ! This is not a long and difficult journey like you make it out to be !
I live in a suburb of Greater Manchester, England, U.K. , called Ashton under Lyne. I am 7.7 miles from central Manchester and it takes at least 23 minutes to drive there, and that’s if you get clear roads, which is hardly ever the case !
When I go by bus to the city, it can take up to an hour, or I can travel the opposite way by bus into my town centre, then get a tram into the city to shave off 10 minutes !
35:03 The Sydney Apartment segment starts here - sadly not the only incident that happened during the housing boom period, where checks were not carried out properly - Opal Tower being another example. The nightmare for the people who owned the apartments is the same - can't sell, can't be compensated, sometimes forced to pour in more money from their own pocket to rebuild.
There was an earlier failure in Sydney, the OPAL, I believe it was called. Large cracks were found in that one too.
Bits of it were falling off. I think it had something to do with a sinkhole or undermining from other construction work.
It was built on a reclaimed swamp land. This is why it's foundations are compromised. Also, the builder took short cuts to save on expenses so he could make more money. There is a lot of greed factor with these high rise developments here, which is why I would NEVER buy into one. The strata fees alone will kill you. Makes no sense, but stupid people are still hoovering them up.
not earlier, Opal was built 10 years after Mascot Towers.
The cracking due to "differential settlement" of Mascot Towers (1-5 Bourke St, Mascot) seemed to have coincidentally happened soon after major roadworks (associated with Westoconnex) and more appartment construction right next to it.
Of course, there will be the claim that "coincidence doesn't mean causality", although this does seem to get the road and appartment construction companies, along with the NSW State Government "off the hook" for accidentally undermining Mascot Towers and all three having to pay damages to the suddenly homeless appartment dwellers.
westconnex has nothing to do with Bourke st, its more than kilometer away. Train station under the building is not affected at all, other buildings around stand still without any problem. Its just shitty construction work, as usual, pour concrete slab to base as is and go-go-go! Ooops, it cracked... we did not think...
The area is sand with a water table high enough to pump water from nothing less than deep piers are needed to support buildings but the builders take the cheap way!
Chinese built.
The video description titled "Sydney Tower's Sudden Fall" does not accurately depict the building referred to in the video. The description suggests Sydney Tower Eye, also known as Sydney Tower or Centrepoint Tower. The structure shown in the video is the Mascot Tower. The correct building that should be referred to in the video's title and description is the Mascot Tower or Mascot Tower complex.
It's clear they went for a clickbait title.
I heard that it would've cost the MGM GRAND around $21 000 to put sprinklers into the restaurant. The amount that MGM had to pay was around $400m to the victims of the fire.
Maybe the excess in their insurance was close to the $21,000 so the risk was deemed worth it.
The neighbours basement level parking area was flooded during construction and they simply pumped out all the water which disrupted the stability provided by an undisrupted water table
The bridge can fail at any minute and yet the Chief Engineer Jason is standing just underneath!!!
He was standing under the new bridge.
I realise that later. Thanks
I was thinking the same thing and I will say, I didn't realise he was standing under the new bridge. I thought he was pretty game standing there when it could collapse at any moment lol
I don't care, because I don't have wife
@@arionodhanisOr maybe you have .😂
No tower in Sydney has collapsed. Are you a master baiter mate???
The biggest problem is nothing is made to last because there's no money in it.
Tenders are given to the lowest contractors and instead of making this bridge bigger wider & strong enough to last 150 to 200 years these engineers think I'll be gone by then not my problem.
Australia is the worst at road planning and construction we have road construction companies who started out as soil and garden suppliers they want to branch out into road construction meaning they will only need a few pieces of new equipment to do the job but have no experience road construction experience they win the tender because it was the cheapest tender by far do the job then within 2 to 3 years the road is falling to bits and its receiving major road works, 10 years later its being ripped up and all re-done again.
They build a new HWY putting in overpasses just wide enough for 4 lanes underneath instead of moving the headwalls out wide enough to take 8 lanes for future traffic numbers this is not rocket science populations dont get smaller & housing divisions are being constructed all the time.
Instead of factoring in an expansion for the next 100 years they couldn't give a shit their just worried about their job and giving the government a good price instead of telling them the obvious & that in the long run billions will be saved.
I've seen cable barriers run for tens of km only to be grubbed out 12 months later to widen the road because planning and future thinking doesn't factor into it.
Why wouldn't you install all the infrastructure knowing in 5 years an extra lane or two will need to go in because of the increase in the population growth but cater for 50 to 80 years so why wouldn't you install all the infrastructure while you have the equipment there in the first place because in 10 to 20 years the cost of materials would triple then when this HWY can't cope with the increase in traffic all that is needed is to put in the road surface.
By infrastructure I mean things like electric cables to cover 8 lanes & not just 2 piping for drainage out where the edge of 8 lanes would go, culverts extending all the way across for an 8 lane HWY, headwalls for overpasses made wide enough to cater for 8 lanes beneath them & protective barries all could be extended to cater for future increase in traffic les chance of them being damaged and a 6 lane leeway for vehicles running out of their no trees no poles to hit apert from barriers 60 to 80 meters away then when that time comes it's only the road surface that needs doing saving billions to the tax payer America does this right as far as roads go their suburban streets are 3 times as wide as ours their freeways are 300 meters across with a 80 meter between north and south bound lanes trees within 50 to 80 meters from the outside edges of their new roads.
Australian government has this stupid saying that country people get killed on country roads yes because they hit unmoveable objects namely trees.
We are a throw away society that's another reason nothing lasts
Why build another wooden house in tornado alley.
Why do structures built by smart men a 100 years ago still stand today.
It blows my mind
The only major infrastructure which really had future expansion in mind were the Government Rail Road (now Sydney Trains, part of TfNSW) and the Harbour Bridge (and associated lead-up roads) in the late 1920s and 1930s, mostly designed by John Bradfield en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Bradfield
.
Of course, our (previously incumbent) "conservative" Liberals state government decided to trash major parts of the Sydney's railways via both neglect and ripping chunks out of the network for conversion into their pet automated/driverless "Sydney Metro" and break the "Bradfield loops", in particular the inner-west/Bankstown loop. The Liberals galaxy-brained idea of converting train lines into train lines, just to spite a unionised workforce, has basically tied the current state government up in contracts to compltete the ruinously expensive Sydney Metro conversion, with the interconnecting Sydney Metro line from North Sydney to Central Station going at least $17billion over budget, basically sucking the state budget into a black hole.
Its national tradition - do not think ahead at all. Its not my problem, I got drawing, let someone else cares... in a week after building commissioned everybidy starts to run rounds and whine loud - aaaaaaaaa nothing is working we need URGENTLY to ****** (fill the endless list by yourself). Especially in my area electronic security which is always not planned at all, no one thinks hou resudents will use it, which doors opens to which side, where are locks, where are cameras, what to do with guests and so on. So its a huge endless tuckerbox for me as service and upgrade department.
only as strong as it's weakest link
And that these skilled labourers our stupid government keep bring into the country who's only claim to fame is knowing how to construct a shanty town with tarps used garbage bags cardboard and FN string, lets not forget about the overflow of skilled doctors being brought into this country with false documents who think a cell count is something done in a prison then the Australian taxpayer is forced to train them the first item on their training list is what is a toilet seat how do you use a toilet seat to teach them shit paper is not bad paper & only used to start their cookers and that no longer do we treat diarrhoea & cholera with kerosene & crushed up cuttlefish. Make the incentives for Australians hard to knock back because when your take home pay is 3 capsicums' 2 tomatoes 2 spuds 2 day old road kill pangolin & 400 rupees a week $10 an hour in Australia is like you've hit the jackpot.
23:46 Canberra hospital 'implosion'
The question is: Why did Council allow the DA to be passed. Who would build on swamp land anyway, no matter how many tonnes of cement filled in the excavation cavity, doil that was taken out in the first place transformed the mass of geological density. The surrounding soil mass would continue to move and settle. Developers make these apartments look so delightful but the prospective buyer never gets to see the short cuts taken.
Just a further comment on the Fyfer canyon bridge. Was the original bridge designed to cope with an earthquake with a magnitude of 9 or above? Is the new bridge designed for the same magnitude? The magnitude of San Francisco earthquake in 1905 was calculated as being a 9 or bigger. The engineers are designing structures to cope with earthquakes, but, are the earthquake loadings that they use derived from a earthquake with a magnitude of 9 or bigger.
Mascot Towers is not a catastrophe, but just brilliand illustration for GREED! Nothing collapsed there even for now, but all owners lost their money. Problem is that in Australia you can not just foreclosure mortgage and go ahead free, if your building lost value - you are in deep debt and no way out. And insurance is so insurance, it never works here.
The same with Opal tower. Our tech manager installed there new firmware to intercom... and next day it cracked for 15 floors out of 35. Residents were kicked out and returned mostly in half a year.
The design engineers for the Fyfer canyon bridge did not do their research properly. The initial bridge should have been designed and built to span the canyon from side to side. They did not take in affect the possibility that there would be rain falling over a period of time.
The ICE train wheels and bogies should have been subject to rigid testing more frequently to compensate for metal fatigue.
I am surprised that the Las Vegas hotel did not have a complete fire detection system installed. The hotel should have had a smoke detector and sprinkler in each hotel room to start with. These should have been installed in all the other parts of the hotel. There should have been sufficient fire escape stairways to allow hotel guests to get away from the fire.
The Mascot Towers unit complex did not fall, but, there were a lot of cracks appearing in the lower levels of the building. The design engineers should have designed the footings to be supported on piles. The piles should have been installed to bear on rock. This would have allowed for any construction adjacent to this building to continue without affecting the unit complex building. This is just my view on the Mascot Towers problem considering that I worked for structural and
civil engineers for nearly 50 years. The other thing that may have contributed to the failure was the speed of construction and possible oversights.
If engineers don't take the terrain and natural angle of repose into account in their calculations, the result is exactly what happens with high angles of repose and water erosion, it appears that was not factored into the design of the column and foundation design.
Yet the Mascot building is still there all this time later . Really doubt anything will ever happen there. Neither will it fall nor will the government take responsibility for its shady deals with developers .
Has this building colapsed, No, its still there and will not fall, its authorities crying Wolf, and government allowing builders to get away with highway robbery over and over again
Still the tallest
Regarding the Mascot Towers. The CFMEU now has the balls to demand that construction workers be paid a base salary of $240k. Look at the quality of construction in Australia both residential and commercial. It's disgusting. $240k for a menial job.
Oh dear 🙄🤦🏼♀️
Why not pay Construction workers $340K or $500K ? Where does it stop?
I wonder who approves the pay rises for CMEU workers? Do they just pick a number that they think they ought to get paid, or is there a union for the CFMEU workers who advocate for them as well? A union for a union?
I dunno what the CFMEU has to do with the Mascot towers. They simply supplied the labour, If you're gonna blame someone try the Engineers, Inspectors, or Developers. Or the tunnelers who went under the towers, Or the people who dug the foundations for the building next door.
$240k is for experienced trades workers doing fly-in-fly-out (FIFO) in remote areas. Regular construction workers make 60k with heavy physical work. You can easily find a construction site and try it yourself. It requires no licence to start with.
It's called an ambit claim - it's not serious, just done to start negotiations.
I'd hardly call 10 storeys a tower block and I agree with the comment under mine.
Time stamps would have been a good idea for this video
dont they ring train wheels daily anymore ?
Arecebo was a discusting loss
Honestly why was that bridge made from steel in the first place
it was built to the code of that times
💙💙💙
Nobody guilty of any wrongdoing ,that happen all the time ,just the residentes back luck
its a shame it cost all those lives b4 anything was fixed
The major problem is the Engineers . Here in Australia they are not help accountable for there mistakes . They make things so complicated to makes them look smart . Never meet a smart Engineer yet
CLICKBAIT - Title story starts at 35:20
ABSOLUTE CLICK BATE. At 45 seconds in I thought what the? Then read below, Sydney Tower is common name for what was called Centre Point Tower, I switched off then after clicking the thumbs down,
👍
'Fuzzing out' the views of Las Vegas' street signs was just silly and unnecessary. I have never seen this done before and so presume that this was your decision. My apologies if I am wrong!
Yes not the Sydney Center Point tower but a residential building so no real story herr
35:03
Stop headlining with a fake title.
The Sydney Tower is never in any problem...it's engineering is fine.
A Sydney apartment complex did sink but it was a privately owned smaller building...
The Bridge is always going to fail because of the mudslides and the landslides etc. What I believe you need to do is excavate where the landslides happen and then cement it working around the Bridge so that it's strong to withstand future landslides. Also after the Bridge is up cement underneath the Bridge so that it's strong don't let soil and dirt and water ruin it because that means the Bridge will always be taken over by natural events.
Just have to say as I’ve seen it with my own eyes on smart motorways in the uk the technology isn’t the issue it’s the people using it I constantly see drivers using the closed lane on smart motorways they need to learn if the sign on the gantry has a huge X showing the lane is shut for some reason usually a breakdown stop blaming the technology that does stop congestion and traffic and have common sense and follow the laws
Another thing about the poor lad that got hit by a car if you have a bump or there’s something up with your car and your on these motorways the common rule is if you car can run and drive still then get of the motorway and the next available place and pull up somewhere safe not at the side of the motorway when your car is still Able to drive
Even if there was a hard shoulder in this situation you don’t even stop there just to exchange insurance details you get of at the next exit hard shoulders aint so safe either let me tell you
An addition of AI camera systems would also help the sensors under the road and get a lane closure more quickly the only issue is people are to sacred of the word AI even tho it could prevent such accidents
You said that the Sydney Tower's fell. That turns out to be clickbait, so I have to give you a thumbs down for lying ! Aarre Peltomaa
Bad luck or bad engineering? Or economical cheating?
Yeah but mascot is fukn swamp land lol same for eastlakes and Rosebery lol.
WHATEVER
Every building every road every important structure, processing plant should have backups in place.
A cell tower goes down leaving people with phones, internet lines are damaged businesses, hospitals, doctors, emergency workers, all unable to operate your unable to shop buy your groceries heaven help us in the 3rd world war it will be every man woman & child for themselves while politicians and rich will all be hiding deep underground in structures we built for them with our money.
Clickbait
Australia is not capable of building top quality standard buildings. Just do a web search and there are more than a dozen balcony collapse incidents. Some are very serious and incurred loss of lives. Australia is moving backwards as far as building construction is concern. Very shameful for a so call modern or developed country.
Well, I suspect *ALL SUCH BALCONY COLLAPSES* are due to 20+ party animals crowding onto them to party, dance, watch NYE fireworks. A balcony is such a simple and safe design and construction that they invariably last their lifetime if the max load is not exceeded. And did any other balconies in the same block of units collapse? No!
Thus ALL BALCONIES should have a "Max Number of Persons" sticker near the door, just like elevators. DUH!
As for suburban matchstick BV houses, I'll definitely agree with you. As a retired builder, design and construction of those things HAS definitely gone to sh*t.
TOO MUCH FAKE JOB = SINGER
What a load of bullshit
CLICKBAIT... IT IS NOT 'SYDNEY TOWER' just some cheapo residential building probably built by some chinese backed company.
