The DX is also the first VF-1 toy to have an anime-accurate shoulder sliding transformation mechanism where the arms slide back on rails to go from fighter to gerwalk. This was first done on the original model kit.
I’m no MBA but I suspect the negative consequence of under-producing (can always make more) is way better than over-producing and flooding the market (can’t unmake surplus product)
These new Bandai DX Macross Valks are what I consider to be the Metal Build versions of their incredibly impressive Gundam lines. I've never been a fan of Gundam but, their metal builds are mind blowing. So, I'm happy Bandai is reviving Macross in this fashion.
Having to buy separate missiles for the BanDai DX VF-1 toys is nearly a deal breaker, despite how nice they are and including that barley good enough stand. The "First Edition" special bundles with the "special banking display stand" ( or "Fan Racer" with VF - 1D ) is a definite redeeming quality add on. Great review! Thanks micronian
About $751 on Ebay for everything....I'm going to have to pass on this and just be happy with my Yamato 1:48 versions....still, the Bandai is the best version I have ever seen.
I would say just get the VF-1S Hikaru with the armor parts and missiles. It's the most iconic VF-1 and having that masterpiece is truly something to behold. I had to pay the premium prices for all three sets since they sold out as soon as they went up for preorder and the site I ordered the armor from never shipped my order.
Thanks for this great review. I just want to share this, (you may or may not know) on your video you mentioned that the DX VF-1S legs flaps (red/black wings) is loose and keeps falling off, to fix that YOU CAN ACTUALLY push/slide those connecting peg holding those legs flaps INWARDS to lock those flaps in place. I hope I was able to help. Great review and keep it up. Thanks.
I'm so jealous brother! I'd love to just have ONE of those DX models...drools...all we can find now-a-days are 1/100 or 1/72 scale which is the size of the models from the late 80's...feel like that too. Wish Bandai would make a re-re-release ;)
Hi. I have the Bandai Vf 1s 1:48 Focker Special. Can you confirm if the canopy clicks when closed? Mine does not. But my VF 1A Hayao does click when closed.
Outstanding review! I own almost all of the Yamato 1:48 scale including strike parts for each one and the separate stands they sold for about $50. The Yamato 1:48 version with strike parts was the pinnacle of all Macross figures at the time, but these new Bandai DX figures are just as awesome, if not better looking. The salute pose from Do You Remember Love at 25:48 was the selling point for me. I'm on Ebay right now and it appears you can find the figure for about $400, about $150 for the strike parts....and this is what kills me....another $110-$230 for the missile set! Wow Bandai! Over $600 for a complete set??? But for the die-hard Robotech/Marcoss fan, this is probably a must. I'm going to contemplate this purchase the rest of the day, lol.

After this review I went ahead and found the missing link and super parts and missile pack .. one day I really think it would be really cool if you did a shelf display video! Of most all your collection . Just my opinion .. thanks for making spend 600$ . In a really good way!!
I was lucky enough to get a Yamato back when they were only $100 on ebay. Had it a week....and the backpack hinge broke. Still looking for a spare or for someone printing spares. I cannot believe how much they go for now. Had I known I'd have got a second job and bought a few dozen back then lol Also, the Yamato were clean white when unboxed but they yellow over time with exposure to light, that's why they look off white. It could even be the plastic absorbs things from the air, dunno, mine has held up pretty well but I've had it in a glass case in gerwalk since the backpack broke.
Sorry for my bad english, I go a question for you experts: which is the model with the greatest amount of diecast in 1/60 or 1/72 scales? any brand is fine, even ko
There are four components to this: 1) A trick of the eye. The Bandai is actually a light gray that your brain wants to recognize as white, maybe because of the gray background, which makes the 1/48 look more yellow 2) Possibly a white balance issue from the camera trying to do the same thing 3) The 1/48 was always a slightly warm white. You'll see the same thing with Super Takatoku 1/55 VF-1S toys. 4) The 1/48 toy is old and probably a bit more yellow than the day it was made.
This review was exactly what I wanted to know. Thanks! I'm curious if there is somewhere o can find info on future Bandai releases in this line unless there aren't any. I'm interested in picking up the red version and I'm curious if there are plans for one or if I should just grab a Yamato one.
Great review. I always check your reviews before buying a Macross toy. I noticed that one of your finlet is reversed. Im assuming it can be easily be repositioned yes?
I'll forever kick myself for not getting one of the Yamato toys I saw in a goodwill of all places as a kid. Didn't have the gun (or the engine covers) but it was pretty darn cool.
The lack of missiles as included accessories for the DX has got to be the lamest move that Bandai has done lately. Talk about disrespecting your fanbase. The included extra stand with the VF-1J was totally unnecessary. I'm sure everyone would rather have had missiles instead. I would have settled for just the 4 missile clusters.
GREAT comparison review! Thanks for sharing with us. I am excited to be picking up my DX VF-1S this week from a friend who will be bringing me one overseas. I do have the Yamato version as well and, I still love it. But, Bandai (IMHO) has killed the competition. Theirs is the ultimate gold standard. Question, has your Yamato one "yellowed" due to age? I am noticing it a lot more tan than the one I have. I know Yamato has been known to have yellowing on their white plastics.
I imagine it has, but it's completely uniform in color so if it has it's due from age rather than sun light. Yamato also used more of a 'bone white' on their DYRL 1/48 VF-1 toys which is much warmer in color than the DX or Arcadia which makes it stand out more.
@@ScorchedEarthToys Thanks. Yes, after looking at my Yamato 1/48, I do notice the coloration getting to be a little more "tan" due to age as well. I store mine in the box in a dark closet so, it is definitely age.
Hmm. Except the Bandai missile pack price is ludicrous and not always available. I can get a display stand cheaply anywhere. No way around it. Not offering the missile pack is just straight up greed. I’m surprised we don’t have to buy a gunpod accessory separately too. I wonder why bandai didn't put a peg for the pilot to attach to like in the Hmr Good channel though.
Can someone tell me why Bandai cannot make 1/60 vf-1 toys? It’s it because they don’t have the right to make 1/60 sized vf-1 or is that they don’t have the 1/60 mold which was produced by Yamato?
Rights around toys appears to be weird in Japan, it seems that licenses are handed out based on scale, type of toy, and sometimes sub-section of the franchise. So Yamato/Arcadia had the rights to do 1/60 scale detailed toys for Macross, Zero, Plus and 7, while Bandai have the rights for 1/60 scale detailed toys for Frontier and Delta. But Bandai did that 1/60 YF-19, and only a few years after Arcadia reissued their one. So that might mean that Arcadia has lost the rights to Plus, or there's some rights-sharing going on, or because Bandai's DX line isn't explicitly scaled there's a loophole. Because Japanese companies are so tight-lipped about their internal workings, we likely won't know the score unless Arcadia or Bandai release another Macross Plus toy.
Lorcan Nagle Bandai had a new YF-21 on display at the Tokyo game show last year. Maybe the rights are passed to Bandai since I heard there are some financial troubles inside Arcadia.
@@dephranque9883 I hadn't heard about that. It could be as simple as Bandai outbidding them on the rights for the license. And the only confirmation we'll get of money problems for Arcadia is if and when they close down. Still, I'm at least down in theory for a Bandai YF-21. I have the Yamato one but it's showing its age. And like, VF-11s? Yes please.

They were sold off stupidly cheap by HLJ for a while, I got one for about 50% off and it's super-sweet. One of the hands disintegrated right out of the box, sadly but it looks great in fighter mode.
I have it out right now on my desk and I don't think it is discolored. Yamato made their 1/48 DYRL VF-1 toys in a bone white, which means it's a little warm. It looks more yellow when you put it next to a cool white (a little blue) of a DX toy. That said, it's more than 15 years old so a little yellowing is certainly possible.
Each DX toy has sold out so I'm afraid I can't tell you how to hunt one down. The Bandai 1/48 VF-1S with the Strike Parts and missiles looks beautifulll!
One of the best Macross comparison videos out there, well-written and informative with great visuals. Nicely done!
The DX is also the first VF-1 toy to have an anime-accurate shoulder sliding transformation mechanism where the arms slide back on rails to go from fighter to gerwalk.
This was first done on the original model kit.
Bandai needs to reissue these and screw all the scalpers on eBay.
Someday I'll understand why companies leave money on the table by under-producing product to extreme levels over and over and over again.
They pretend to sell out, raise prices. They calling feeling out demand. I call it sticking it to the customer.
