Really well done! I have had one of these rulers for a long time, and now I'll start using mine, as lining my paper is a task I dislike, and this will allow me to use so many types of papers . Thanks a lot for the excellent demonstration!
Thank you! It is the best full explanation! I don t speak English, don t know how to say, what I feel about that. But I understand all what you have said and showed. These lines , “x”, “a”, “d”, I finely got what it means. You are good, you helped me very much! I m learning calligraphy and bought this ruler today.
Very helpful & easy to follow. I would NOT want to purchase this tool & then try (& fail) to figure out how to use it on my own. Your post ensures it'll become a useful part of my lettering skill portfolio. Thanks!
Thank you for this fabulous explanation. I've had the ruler for ages, the instructions are ...lacking... but this has been so wonderfully clear. I can now use it effectively. Best wishes.
On the Engrosser guide what is the 1A and 1D used for? Also, I think you could have equally spaced 55• angle lines by aligning the guide’s angled point edge to the lower scale, e.g. every 1/2”
I ordered this from your vendor several. Weeks ago, the book store sent a message saying it was going to be mailed, but I never received it, are you still having courses? Thanks, Bo
I see you using a mechanical pencil. Are there white 0.5mm leads available for these pencils? I checked out Fons and Porter, and Bohin. They're expensive
What is the mechanical pencil with white lead you are using? Please would you tell exactly the specification odf the pencil with the wite lead. I cannot find a pencil with white lead online except for a pencil associated with sewing.
I cant get this to work with any ruler on any paper. I have mostly graph paper and would like to use my notebooks. The Spencerian ruler keeps popping off the page. Ph well i guess its an operator error.
For small brush pens, you could use the Engrosser Ruler and choose the 7mm x-height. For larger brush pens, you could use 6mm or 7mm and alternate the dots so that the lines are 12 or 14mm apart, which would be a more suitable size for large brush pens.
Thank you Loveleigh! The ruler is a game changer! I have purchased the 2 ruler set from Johnneal.
Very informative video. Well done!
You're welcome! We appreciate your feedback :)
I finally understand what the ratio numbers mean! Thank you! I don’t have a ruler like this yet but I’m thinking of purchasing one.
Yay! It's a great feeling when something finally "clicks".
Wow, you cleared up much confusion in this sort video - excellent demo and instruction! Thank you (off to purchase the pair).

Just got a set of these rulers today. I am looking forward to using them.
I finally got my engrosser ruler, it was on back order for awhile. Although I knew the general idea, this video was quite helpful - so thank you!
You're welcome, Denise!
Thank you for showing how to make more than one guideline. Yours was the only video I found that does that.
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!

You're welcome, Phillip! It did take me a few tries to figure it out and so I wanted to share my knowledge. Happy to hear it was helpful.
thank you for this! been wondering about the difference of the two, and now I finally understood. 😊 getting an engrosser ruler first.

Isnt the dash line for caps height

Hello! The lead is normal gray, it just looks white because of the contrast with black paper and light reflecting off it.
I cant get this to work with any ruler on any paper. I have mostly graph paper and would like to use my notebooks. The Spencerian ruler keeps popping off the page. Ph well i guess its an operator error.
How wide do you make the spaces? Is there a specific width marked on the ruler?
Maybe the black lines that separate the x height options?
@@jenlelandmj Exactly! The video shows how :)
Where can you buy these online?
Here’s where I got them: www.johnnealbooks.com/product/set-ab-calligraphy-rulers
How can you use these rulers for large and small brush pens?
For small brush pens, you could use the Engrosser Ruler and choose the 7mm x-height. For larger brush pens, you could use 6mm or 7mm and alternate the dots so that the lines are 12 or 14mm apart, which would be a more suitable size for large brush pens.
Has anyone ever used the 1mm x height?
It's so tiny!
Watching your demonstration makes me nervous 😬
