I bought a new ‘85 Cutlass that was an absolute lemon. It was by far the most troublesome piece of junk of the 30 or so cars I have owned. The only positive about it was that it was a nice looking car.
The Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, Chevy Cavalier and I learn to drive on my dad’s 1983 Buick Skyhawk Ttype was my favorite cars back then. I got my license in February, 1988. I was a teenager and turn 20 in 1984.
The Oldsmobile Cutlass and the Buick Regal were my favorite cars of the 1980's!!! When my mother bought an '82 Cutlass, she passed down her 1974 Cutlass to me! But when it was stolen in 1987, it was gone for good!
A salute from Bogotà DC, Colombia. Very interesting sales list, back in the days when GM was real big, seriuos contender. by the way, I had a 1984 Chevy Celebrity, assembled here, with CKD compontents at GM Colmotores manufacturing plant. And I could see by myself, why the model reached the top sales records. Good gas mileage, plenty of power from the 2.8 liter V6, and superb 4 speed manual transaxle, big and comfortable interior, quiet ride and very low engine noise inside, the features I recall the most. Only produced between 1982/1985, low sales due the high government taxes we pay here. That killed the car popularity. Thanks for video, and all GM fans want to see the corporation gettin`big one more time.
I was born in 1982. I saw tons of Escorts and G-Body Olds all over the place. Cavaliers were also a very common sighting. There's 1 white late 80s Cavalier sedan that I sometimes see on the busy commercially developed street I live near. It's in excellent condition. 2 twins I'd see tons of back in the 80s were the Aries/Reliant. I like the sportier, smoother refreshed styling the Escort got in the late 80s. The GM G-Body is one of my favorite body styles of all-time. Like that of the Fox Body Mustang, they are excellent cars to make into sleepers and are bound to jump in value in the next few years.
@ 28 years in age in 1972, I ordered a fully loaded 1972 Cutlass Supreme. The car had everything the factory would put on a Cadillac. I opted for the 4-bbl 350 V8. I kept that car until August 1975 and ordered a1976 Cutlass Supreme Brougham with everything. An 8000 dollar car! The 72 I gave to my dear mom. The 76' I kept until 1990 and I gave it to my brother. I put 563 thousand miles on the engine and trans and decided to get a complete rebuild on both. I purchased a 1979 Cutlass Supreme in 79' and I still have that car. In 1999, I yanked the 305 out and installed a 75' model 350 V8, and the turbo 400 tranny from a wrecked Olds Vista Cruiser wagon. Both engine and tranny were completely rebuilt. I currently have a 1974 Cutlass Supreme that was in storage for approximately 30 years. The car had 53,333 miles on it when I purchased it from a classic car website four years ago. I hate like hell that Oldsmobile went out of business, as they sold more cars in the 70's to the middle 80's. My brother in-law worked for Oldsmobile in Detroit and Lansing Michigan during that time and he told me that during those years, Oldsmobile was the experiment car for Cadillac. What ever went on an Oldsmobile was put on a Cadillac. The best Oldsmobile 350 V8 engines were manufactured from 1968 thru 1976. Those engines were better built and could take great punishment and still hold up. The engines in my Cutlasses never leaked not one ounce of liquid. They were just really good engines. Thanks to every one.
They have actually gotten much better thanks to the Japanese. lol Thanks for the comment! We hope you subscribed to our channel if you're not a subscriber yet! It really helps us out. Boca Brothers

I liked the Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme especially with wire wheel covers when I was in high school that year as other Oldsmobile luxury cars as most other GM cars as Ford, Lincoln and Mercury luxury/big cars & still do.
I liked the Olds Cutlass Supreme and Supreme Brougham with the whitewalls and wire wheel covers. A smaller personal luxury coupe than the Olds Toronado.
Safe to say Oldsmobile OWNED the 70s-80s. It really sucks GM top brass started cutting corners in a effort to streamline product lines. I don’t remember which GM executive said “we’re already the number one automaker in the world, why are we “wasting” (🙄) money on product design/testing”? They started designing cars with more interchangeable parts, similar looks, all in a effort to cut costs. And look what happened? Most of the cars lost that distinction and uniqueness, people started thinking “why pay more for a Buick/Oldsmobile/whatever when I can buy the same car marketed as a cheaper chevy? It wasn’t too long before that thinking migrated to the foreign cars, combined with the lousy quantity control hurt by the “cheaper in better” way of thinking. You don’t become the world biggest automaker by accident. A lot of the great car guys of the 50-early 80s were retiring, the new auto executives were way to eager to make a name for themselves by ignoring what had worked for decades and trying new things. Nothing wrong with innovation, just don’t forget what got you on top.
I love every word of what you just said. It really is a shame what GM did, they ran themselves into the ground. My family only has two cars (An 84 Chevy G30, and a 95 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera) I'll call myself a GM person all day everyday. But don't think I'll ever buy their newer garbage. I've seen old GM's, old Ford's, Old Chrysler, and new of each. I can say in my opinion the old GM's we're on top. My 95 Olds is an absolute tank, that will show no mercy. it's got 243K Miles (As of writing this) and has been the families Daily driver since 2010. Last October it's transmission failed, (The Reverse Reaction Drum had a fault out of the factory. It just takes an extremely long time for it to develop) We rebuilt that transmission, and just about almost rebuilt everything else on that car since owning in. My point is, I know that car inside and out, I know what it's worth. Sad thing is that most GM Vehicles were worth that. And really really really aren't anymore. Most US vehicles just aren't. What a shame. The other thing I wanted to point out, is Oldsmobile was always ahead of it's time, Not only was the company the first to accomplish a lot of 'firsts' in automotive history. (such as the first speedometer, the first single peace windshield, the first automatic transmission, and most importantly, the first mass produced model. Which is generally mistakenly titled to Ford, when Ford had the first mass produced model on an assembly line) Another great example of olds being ahead of their time, is their last concept cars, in 2001. Oldsmobile released two vehicles, a yellow convertible (Which was the more popular one) and a dark blue sedan. Both vehicles would've fit in amazingly in appearance, in today's vehicle line ups. But... I suppose in the end, it might've been better that Oldsmobile was pushed out, before they name could be destroyed by today's junk. At least Today, Oldsmobile is looked at as a legend that is missed, and not another pos rebadged Chevy that GM just can't help themselves to squat out. Lastly. Sorry about my rambles. I got carried away.

It caught on fire on my way to work one morning and I left it on the street and caught a cab. FORD - F ound O n T he R oad D ead !
The rear drive Olds Cutlass still looks great and has the most potential for performance improvements among those listed. They sold so well that to acquire one now for restomodding would be an affordable point of entry. Yes to the Cutlass!
I had a new ‘85 rear wheel drive Cutlass. It was a good looking car but was not trustworthy ata all. It was a total lemon, the worst piece of junk I have owned. It was towed about 35 times in the 2 years I owned it. I celebrated the day it was gone. My Pintos were far more reliable.
@@jamesdennis2058 Sorry to hear about your shitty experience with it. I never heard a horror story like that before about them. Regardless, if I owned one I would completely gut it and resto mod it with quality components. Basically just use the shell - which is affordable compared to a classic Chevelle or GTO, etc.
Loving this one thanks for sharing very information blessed love to all knowledge is power hopefully everyone pays attention keep up the good work would love to get my hands on those classic cars 🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲
I drove an '86 Olds Cutlass Supreme Brougham light blue/dark blue through most of the 90's I handed it down to my wife who drove it until 2001. We loved that car, it never left us stranded
Excellent and informative video as always. I remember in the early 80s in drivers ed they used a couple of cutlasses and regals with the steering wheel and brakes on both sides. Both really nice riding cars I think one of the Oldsmobiles was a diesel as well. Loud but still very nice. Not many people in the class so you got to drive every day. Learned a lot both about cars but driving as well. Shame in most places drivers ed isn't offered any more. But still really nice cars anyway.
I knew Cutlass Supremes were extremely popular back in the 70’s and 80’s, but never thought the 1980 would be be the most popular car of the 80’s. That is pretty cool. I still have my parents 1980 Cutlass Supreme with only 38K miles on it and It has been babied its whole life. Love the G bodies. Great video.
I find it REALLY hard to believe that neither the IROC Camaro nor any of Fox body Mustangs were on this list, Both of those cars were EVERYWHERE, you couldn't spit in the wind without hitting one or both of them. While in high school I worked at my local Chevy/GMC Dealership and we couldn't keep them, as soon as they rolled in off the truck they were gone. I never saw one that sat on the lot more than 3 or 4 days, the local Ford Dealership was right across the street and the Mustangs from what I could tell were the same way. I can't remember seeing a Mustang sit on there lot for more than a week. I'm not surprised about the Cutlass being on here so many times though, The other dealership in town was a Pontiac/Olds dealership and they were very popular too. I really can't remember seeing all that many cavaliers or escorts though.
In the 70's I had a 78 Cutlass Calais sports model with a 305 V8. My older sister had a 73 Cutlass Supreme. Back when cars had real chrome metal bumpers.
my uncle had a Chevy Caprice Classic which my dad had for a couple of years after that dad had several used cars after his 1979 Toyota Corolla station wagon
Turns out I had #2! It was a 1981 Cutlass Supreme Brougham. It was white with navy blue velour interior, navy blue landau top and matching pinstripe. It was such a sharp car, loved it!
@@geraldthomas8241 I'll do you one better...Mine was a diesel!!! But it actually performed for me pretty well as I remember. And if I really stomped on it, the smoke would come rolling out of that dual exhaust!
My dad had an old, but mint Chevrolet Caprice with the diesel. It was a terrible engine indeed, but it held fine for 6 years so dad could economically commute to and from college and work and when he graduated it started coming apart. Well we pulled a 454 out of a wrecked truck, gave it a cam and intake and carb and dad got parts from the family wrecking yard and we finished the change over in a few weekends of work. After that he had a dual exhaust system put in it and drove it all of 3 weeks before he got an offer on it. He took the second offer and got $4200 for it. I got to drive it once, delivering it for the new owner. I was 15. The kid was 18 and it had far more power than he needed. I told hi. To find a beater for winters and to take it easy because it's too easily excited and will spin the tires and gas gauge. He got into a real minor incident that needed front suspension work but I had a Pic of it show up last year and it looks like new, but now has 4 wheel disc brakes and new air conditioning. All windows are mirror tint and the guy told me on fb that he scared himself a couple times but took my advice. It's his pride and joy after his family and he's since helped me find a pair of straight bumpers for a car I'm working on when I can. Amazing how a few years turned a kid I thought was a dick into a decent guy I chat with a few times a month. Cars rule. Especially old ones!
Also had an 81 cutlass it was white with burgundy interior with chevrolet 267ci 4.4 litre small v8 its was a freebie from a friend's estate sale had it for about 2 years from about 1996 to 98 or 99 had to do some rear frame repair to it before it would pass inspection or certification the 78 to 80 cars where good and super popular too the 81 to 88 cars where better looking imo Oldsmobile cutlass was the best selling car for much of the 1980s it too was a good amount of car for the money then now and also still many years later
I took a class from a guy who worked on the Cavalier campaign. He said GM's research (and his agency's) showed the Cavalier had ZERO benefits over any of the competition - so technically there was no legitimate reason to buy the car. But, of course, never underestimate the American public and their love of mediocrity. Of course, the horrible reliability of these vehicles and other American products on the list just cemented how the Asian and German rivals were going to be dominant.
Back in the 80s I traded in my Camaro V8 and hopped into a brand new Cavalier. It barley made it up the hill. Thanks for watching David. Make sure and subscribe.
Making cars is a business. Big profits are made from horribly reliable predictably practical family sedans. Running a business with no concerns about the bottom line? See you in the line for welfare checks soon!
@@filthyanimal874 Um, Mercedes and BMW were reliable (depending on model) in the 1980s. I had a used 1984 325e that was proof positive, and my 2000 528i that was on autobahn had zero problems. These days German cars are barely able to make it to the warranty end before dying.
@@LearnAboutFlow lol the last part of your reply was funny 😄 and yes you’re right. I should’ve made it clear and mentioned that German cars are unreliable from around the year 2000 and on.
My favorite was the 1980 Monte Carlo Turbo Sport Coupe with T-Tops, styled steel wheels and two-tone paint! The only way you could tell was from the special hood that had the smallish offset bulge with turbo script on both sides.
@@ThisOldCarChannel Love the channel and as a true car person...you know I already did! BTW my first car was a 1980 MC light metallic blue ext/dark blue int!
I had a preowned Chevrolet Cavalier 4 door then later traded for a new 1989 Chevrolet Cavalier 2 door which I don't know what I was thinking. I remember the Ford Escort/Mercury Lynx very well & later the Ford Tempo/Mercury Topaz too.
My 1st car in 1996 was a 1987 Ford Escort GT that was Oxford white with black mirrors and a black rear wing. It had the grey recaro like seats with the halo headrest, i had the outside of the gauge area and the center radio section of the dash painted white with black splatter. I was 15 when i got the car, had i known how i would feel about the car today i would have never sold it.
My dad bought a new Ford escort in 1987 the first year the fuel injection come out the gas freed stuck on but it was a straight drive you could match the clutch in and the gas gas pedal with unstick
I wish to God I'd bought an '81 Diesel Escort when they first came out but I didn't have the money. My next pick would have been an '82 Diesel Celebrity. That was back when Diesels were worth having, not just for super mileage but for lower diesel fuel prices. Today, they're nothing but a pain in the ass and diesel costs more. No advantage now.
My favorite 80’s vehicles were jaguar XJ series GM cars like Caprice Impala Bonneville Parisienne and Le Sabre park avenue Oldsmobile Delta 88 and 98 regency
The 80s was def the worst decade for cars…almost all ugly boxes. The Cutlass is the only tolerable model on this list. But I think it’s interesting how well 2 door couples sold. I wish the American personal luxury car or sports coupe would make a comeback
Because our 75 Cutlass was a gas guzzler that the fuel gauge moved as quickly it was replaced by a 80 Chevette, I looked at an 80 Subaru with a 4speed stick, and a price tag under $4000, it was okay, but 2 years later, It was with an 81 Z28, definitely more sporty than a Chevette!!!
My first car was an 81 lemans I wrecked it, then bought a 78 malibu which I still have. I have a hard time selling shit, but wish I kept my 2wd 88 wrangler traded it for a sled, which I later sold for more to get rrsps
What? "For the 1980 model year the 4 door sedan and diesel were cut due to poor sales"!? The 4 door sedan CAME OUT in 1980 and continued to be sold through 1987! It was one of the most popular cars around at The time! The diesel was available through 1985!
My parents had a Cavilier, let's just say they never bought a Chevy again, or anyone else in the family. Unreliable would have been a major improvement.

Regardless, if I owned one I would completely gut it and resto mod it with quality components. Basically just use the shell - which is affordable compared to a classic Chevelle or GTO, etc.
True Bruce! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for watching and the comment James!
Had an 84 Cutlass with the durable 3.8 pretty darn good car
Nice Richard! Thanks for watching. Make sure and subscribe.
Loving this one thanks for sharing very information blessed love to all knowledge is power hopefully everyone pays attention keep up the good work would love to get my hands on those classic cars 🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲
Right on Phillip. Bless you and Merry Christmas! Thanks for watching. Please subscribe.
Cutlass was one good looking car
I agree! Thanks for watching. Make sure and subscribe.
I had a Cavalier and my wife had an Escort. They rattled but they worked.
HAHA! Thanks for watching Dave!
lol
Opposite. I had an Escort and my wife (at the time) had a Cavalier when we got married in 1987.
I had the 2 tone blue Cutlass Salon with the rally rims. Sporty class
I just saw a nice Cutlass at the convenient store last night. Thanks for watching. Please subscribe.
Wow talk about getting goosebumps. From 1984-91 I lived right behind Ray Whitfield. That cartoon was always on TV.
I agree. I remember cars of the 80s.
Thanks for watching Jason!
Coupes are special
Thanks for watching George. Please subscribe...Pretty please.
I was expecting the 1980 Chevy Chevette to be on this list.
Thanks for watching! Hope you subscribe to our channel if you haven't already!
My parents had a 1978 Chevy Chevette. My memory is clear since 1984 so I remember them using it in the mid 1980s.
You got another sub 😊
the pontiac grand prix was my favorite
Thanks for watching Super Robbie. Make sure and subscribe.
Honda Accord..........Best car in this most popular line up!
They are certainly good dependable cars! My mom handed me her 1998 and it's still going!
The oldmobile cutlass was the/one of the best selling cars for like 13 years
1980 with 38k miles! wow! Thanks for watching! Hope you subscribe to our channel if you haven't already everyone!
That's amazing! I've always been a fan of the cutlass's. Or at least I started when my family got a 95 Cutlass Ciera. Had that thing since 2010
Nice car
Those Cars need to be in video games to be remembered....rebel racing... for sure need some.
Amazing how the same names end up on the same list more than once.
Cutlass Supreme and Celebrity! My favorites!
Love the Cutlass Juan! Thanks for watching. Make sure and subscribe.
How about the Ford Taurus? That model was also popular during that time if memory serves me correctly.
YES they were David. Had a buddy who had one. Worked well for him. Thanks for watching and the comment. We hope your a subscriber!
Never was the number one selling in any model year during the 80s
In the 70's I had a 78 Cutlass Calais sports model with a 305 V8. My older sister had a 73 Cutlass Supreme. Back when cars had real chrome metal bumpers.
my uncle had a Chevy Caprice Classic which my dad had for a couple of years after that dad had several used cars after his 1979 Toyota Corolla station wagon
Wow! Thanks for sharing Courtney!
I had a new '88 Buick Skyhawk. Of course it was a Cavalier twin. I used it for 10 years, and the buyer used it for another eight years!
I love my 1986 thunderbird 5.0 L elan with 23000 original miles. Sweet ride.
Turns out I had #2! It was a 1981 Cutlass Supreme Brougham. It was white with navy blue velour interior, navy blue landau top and matching pinstripe. It was such a sharp car, loved it!
I had the same. It was a beauty, but I didn't like the V6 it had. I had to turn off the A/C to get the speed to merge onto the freeway. Lol
@@geraldthomas8241 I'll do you one better...Mine was a diesel!!! But it actually performed for me pretty well as I remember. And if I really stomped on it, the smoke would come rolling out of that dual exhaust!
The Chevy Citation sold over 800K units in 1980. One of the pictures you have of the Cavalier was of the much less popular Cadillac Cimmaron.
My parents had an 88 Escort LX wagon with 5 speed brand new. I passed my road test with it years later.
Awesome! Thanks for watching and the comment. We hope you're a subscriber.
I was surprised the Ford Taurus did not make your list
@@kenlichtig8024 it never was the number one selling car in the 80s decade. This list is of the number one selling car each model year.
Damn I remember that commercial at the beginning, it was a dealer in the Detroit area lol
The beginning ad mentioned Telegraph Road. Was Ray Whifield Ford in Detroit?
Also had an 81 cutlass it was white with burgundy interior with chevrolet 267ci 4.4 litre small v8 its was a freebie from a friend's estate sale had it for about 2 years from about 1996 to 98 or 99 had to do some rear frame repair to it before it would pass inspection or certification the 78 to 80 cars where good and super popular too the 81 to 88 cars where better looking imo Oldsmobile cutlass was the best selling car for much of the 1980s it too was a good amount of car for the money then now and also still many years later
They were popular cars for the day Steve. Thanks for watching. We hope you're a subscriber.
I remember growing up in the 90s I used to see the 1980s Ford Escort everywhere to be honest I miss seeing them wasn't a bad looking car for the price
What about the Park Avenue! That was a popular car. I remember a lot of those on the road in the 80s.
German cars reliable??? 😂 They’re overly engineered garbage that spend more time in the shop than on the road.
Is the cutlass supreme related to the taco supreme from taco bell?
Both produce toxic fumes.
@@ripvanrevs just i found it curious that both have the word supreme for it's product.
Too funny Mustang Mike! lol....Thanks for watching! Hope you subscribe to our channel if you haven't already!
Cultass Supreme remember late 90s it seemed the vehicle of drug dealers 🤔.
Where is the Ford Taurus/ Mercury Sable?
Yeah. Top 10 Working on a second edition. Thanks for watching! Hope you subscribe to our channel if you haven't already!
These sales numbers must include rental fleets, especially with respect to the Cavalier and Celebrity models?
Thanks for watching! Hope you subscribe to our channel if you haven't already!
Nothing like a 1988 Buick Park Ave
They were stylish Andrew! Thanks for watching and the comment. We hope you are a subscriber.
Actually in 1980 the Chevrolet Citation was the best selling car. They sold 811,000 of those - way more than the Cutlass that year.
I remember everybody had at least one Chevette in the family.
My favorite was the 1980 Monte Carlo Turbo Sport Coupe with T-Tops, styled steel wheels and two-tone paint! The only way you could tell was from the special hood that had the smallish offset bulge with turbo script on both sides.
Loved the T-Top version Carl. Thanks for watching. Make sure and subscribe.
@@ThisOldCarChannel Love the channel and as a true car person...you know I already did! BTW my first car was a 1980 MC light metallic blue ext/dark blue int!
The 80s was good year for small cars
What ,no Ford Taurus ?
I had a preowned Chevrolet Cavalier 4 door then later traded for a new 1989 Chevrolet Cavalier 2 door which I don't know what I was thinking. I remember the Ford Escort/Mercury Lynx very well & later the Ford Tempo/Mercury Topaz too.
yall got the 90's cars
Coming soon Joel! Thanks for watching! Hope you subscribe to our channel if you haven't already!
I’m surprised the Kcar didn’t make the list.
I think it's time for a part 2 Donald. lol... Thanks for watching and the comment. We hope you can help by subscribing if you haven't already.
2:08 The yellow car pictured here was not a Cutlass, but was the Intrigue

Might want to recheck your list because I’m sure the Ford Tempo belongs in here somewhere.
Look out for the second edition Rich. Thanks for watching. Make sure and subscribe.
My favorite 80’s vehicles were jaguar XJ series GM cars like Caprice Impala Bonneville Parisienne and Le Sabre park avenue Oldsmobile Delta 88 and 98 regency
My mom had a Delta 88. Smooth ride Calvin. Thanks for watching. Make sure and subscribe.
the 1980 chevy citation sold over 800,000 cars. should be no. 1
Where is the Chevette? I know they weren’t glamorous or fast, but they sold 449161 of them in 1980!! Huge omission!
Oldsmobile Cutlass of all times
I like how a Cadillac Cimarron is shown when talking about the Chevy Cavalier. Pretty much the same thing though... just double the price.
I had a Citation and could not believe Cadi came out with the Cimarron. WHAT THA!
The 80s was def the worst decade for cars…almost all ugly boxes. The Cutlass is the only tolerable model on this list.
But I think it’s interesting how well 2 door couples sold. I wish the American personal luxury car or sports coupe would make a comeback
The pontiac grandprix was a nice car also
83 cutlass supreme. My fav
I was partial to the grand national but parents wouldn’t let me buy it since to there eyes the regal looked the same and way cheaper
But that ENGINE! HA! Thanks for watching and the comment Javier. We hope you are a subscriber.
Had a 1990 Escort Gt , loved it. Not super quick but hit all the right buttons. Why Ford dropped it I do not know.
The video made it look quick! Make sure and subscribe. Thanks!
They didn't they turned it over to Mazda, the 91 and later GTs were so much better.
I have an 89 Ford Escort LX that I still use regularly.
I sure would have thought that
monte carlo would have been in the round up.
Wait , what about the 84 Buick skylark and skyhawk, and the celiac GT , Buick century
Thanks for watching and sharing. We hope you're a subscriber.
Awesome James! Thanks for watching. Make sure and subscribe.
Sad so many of these were crushed at the junk yards
My first car was an 81 lemans I wrecked it, then bought a 78 malibu which I still have. I have a hard time selling shit, but wish I kept my 2wd 88 wrangler traded it for a sled, which I later sold for more to get rrsps

What? "For the 1980 model year the 4 door sedan and diesel were cut due to poor sales"!? The 4 door sedan CAME OUT in 1980 and continued to be sold through 1987! It was one of the most popular cars around at The time! The diesel was available through 1985!
Thanks for watching. Make sure and subscribe cause we'll be giving out prizes soon!
I'm surprised the Buick Regal was not in this list.
It may be on our next one Danny. Thanks for watching. Make sure and subscribe.
I'm not surprised by Cutlass and Escort but no Ford Taurus? I am blown by Cavaliers' popularity. Americans must really be gullible to advertisers.
My parents had a Cavilier, let's just say they never bought a Chevy again, or anyone else in the family. Unreliable would have been a major improvement.
