Probably one of the only sound points Affleck made in that whole snafu. Otherwise it was mostly bad faith interpretations of the literal statements Sam was being pretty clear about. I think Sam's "empower the true reformers" sentiment, while still vague and a bit murky, is solid enough of a response to dissuage the idea that Sam is being dishonest and just looking for an excuse to disparage some element of Islamic culture
It's the "Just in Case" or "slippery slope" of it all. Fascists get their foot in the door through the cult of activity... the argument that doing things that don't work is better than doing nothing because the things that don't work are the fascism.
@@formerctgovernordannelmall1452 Oh, I don’t think Ben was being bad fisth at all. I think he was just hearing the dog whistles. @manderly33 very fair assessment, calling Ben's lashing out "bad faith' was hyperbolic. The one thing I'd somewhat contend with, though, is that Sam does* recognize those issues with Christianity. He and the other "horsemen of atheism" as they used to so cringe-inducingly be called by young edgy atheists like myself 10-15 years ago, repeated the same set of solid criticisms toward Christianity ad nauseum to the point where citing any of those criticisms, now, is seen as stereotypical of the Hitchens/Carlin-worshipping "Reddit Neckbeard Atheist". After a while I think Sam (one of the only remaining horsemen to not only still be alive but remain pretty engaged in the public sphere) felt that he was beating a dead horse and that the very similar horse of Islamic doctrine was, in comparison, not being...beaten enough?? ...and he had to raise awareness of that? Maybe? Framing it that way makes it sound stupid (and it is) but I remember that being the sincere headspace of the response to this whole situation back when it happened years ago. and that's why we have clips of him talking about real incidents of Christian religious terrorism in such a Blaisé manner. Idk. Maybe that or he just internally has less bias against "white western" culture issues. I don't know what's in the man's heart. I just don't think there necessarily HAS to be an ask as long as youre clear about the conclusion youre driving at with your questioning, because there doesn't need to be with criticism of Christianity. You can mention the Church's role in covering up sexual abuse scandals to prove a point about those power structures without personally having a remedy that you're advocating. Sometimes getting people to consider a thing is enough, so long as there's no deception in it The statement "I think Liberals have done a bad job of addressing religious fundamentalism on the whole" is (albeit in a vaccuum) true to the extent that Liberals are far more willing to extend those kinds of criticisms to religious fundamentalism of a Christian variety while excluding those of any other variety. Now, I agree that the blame is kind of being misplaced here, because the onus of defeating authoritarian power structures is, by Sam, being applied to a kind of "good hearted but passive" Liberal who has to stand up and defeat these structures, rather than on the people in power perpetrating them. For that I'll give Ben more credit in the conversation overall, as well. I just feel like Sam could've more diplomatically communicated his message by not, to your point, downplaying the clinic bombings. Instead, he could have simply said "substitute every problematic element of Islamic doctrine I'm discussing with a real equivalent from Christianity. Criticize it. Are you being bigoted toward Christians?" Would have made it pretty clear what he was driving at
@@formerctgovernordannelmall1452 on the other hand, taken in accordance with everything else Harris believes, it's pretty obvious that his "true reformers" retort is really just another layer of obfuscation when those reformers he's referring to end up being supporters of the same Western political-economic interests that destabilized the region and created the conditions for a surge in Islamic extremism in the first place. If his critiques were serious and actually thought-out he'd realize that the only way to empower Islamic reform would require being honest about what, politically, caused Islamic fundamentalists to gain so much traction, and countering that state of affairs, which was undeniably caused by continuing Cold War era imperialist foreign policy and using the regions for proxy wars with the Soviets. Unfortunately, Sam can't do that, because he has a huge blind spot when it comes to pseudoscientific justifications for the current economic status quo being the result of an objectively meritocratic process, exemplified in his belief that races of people can have inherently, genetically lower IQ which causes them to stagnate culturally and technologically.
