    I totally agree that wax potting changes and actually takes away from the "Character" of the P.A.F.
    The un waxed versions do indeed have a 3D like quality to them.

    Over the Pond Guy was making replicas way before Dave Stevens, so was Tom Holmes. One thing most makers don't get right is the internal geometry of the slug coil is different to the screw coil, so even if both coil's were wound with the same number of turns, the wire wound on them would not be the same length.
    edit* Just saw you addressed this towards the end.

    I was sure high wind pickups were louder. I used to play with Super D's and one of my bandmates always said my guitar was 'too loud'. He had a sharp ear and wasn't talking about amp volume.

    For a long time I have loved that you use/put your own logo on everything you build and make. It shows a level of honour, pride and integrity that is lacking in the replica/reproduction world.
    Have you considered offering a complete kit of the screws you use for mounting things like strap buttons, pickup rings and plastics, on your site? I find it very difficult to know what the correct size for each screw is, and where to get them. Sets from China are always too small and of inferior quality.
    Many thanks.

      Thank you. I buy parts in different places and now I can not say exactly where to buy them better. Since different options come across from batch to batch, even from the same store. There are no suitable parts in China. Only if you order large batches according to the required specifications at the factory. In this case, they can make to order.

    Hey man you do know that in 61 and 62 there are PAF's around that have a fake serial no. The no. Is from the bridge when it got its patent. But the pickups are true original PAF'S. They may be harder to find but they're most certainly out there somewhere. Im not sure how you would determine it.

    Almost every winder wax pots these days. The microphonic qualities of a PAF take in the full sound of the instrument. I am positive, I have heard on tracks by people like Kossoff, the sound of the wood on the fretboard as he bends and the full wood of the whole instrument.

    Since no two old P.A.F's sound exactly the same and can vary a great deal in resistance what exactly is the "P.A.F TONE"?
    Also do you feel that modern winders such as yourself have captured the same Mojo the old P.A.F's are known to have?
    or is it only the originals that have this?

    • @8BombCustom
      @8BombCustom  2 года назад

      Some got it. But they are few. Now it is much more difficult and requires a very deep approach. Many people just make good pickups, but in the end it all applies to specific musical situations.

    What magnets do you use in the paf clones you make?

  • @francissalva9307

    how different is the vintage Alnico vs the modern Alnico production? i find that vintage PAF doesnt have that modern "bite"in tone but rather have a sweet not-harsh bite and not very punchy. i find that modern high charged A3 in PAF replicas works best for this tone. do you have the same experience?

    • @8BombCustom
      @8BombCustom  2 года назад

      In my experience the A3 are the weakest magnets (American) and hard to work with. Nevertheless, for some reason, each manufacturer makes their own alloys, calling it Alnico 2,3,4,5 ... Therefore, they all sound differently for everyone. I have been looking for a suitable manufacturer for a very long time and found it not in America. With magnets, the same story is obtained as with capacitors. The basic principle in reverse engineering for a good result that always works is the exact match of the material and production technology. But you always need to consider compensation for modern technology nuances and the nuances of alloys of other parts. The pickup is a system of many components, so not only the magnet is responsible for its part of the work. This is an orchestra.

      @@8BombCustom thanks man! so having that said, i can still get a close to "genuine"PAF sound with a paf replica with A3? ( i found that a fully charged A3 works well and i have had also some experiences with a normal charged A3 that are also unworkable and very thin sounding

    Whatever the PAF was died when they stopped making the wire magnets and metals
    that went into their construction back in the 70s todays offerings are meh.

    • @8BombCustom
      @8BombCustom  2 года назад +1

      yes, changes in manufacturing principles and new alloy standards make it difficult to get an accurate reproduction of the result. But there are ways to compensate for the sound of modern materials (alloys and wires) that will allow you to fine-tune the sound and dynamics in accordance with the vintage original. Some factories accept orders for the production of batches of parts with the required characteristics of alloys and sizes.

    Your microphony experiment was the same as many that have been done before with pickups. It merely showed that vocal sound waves can elicit a response from a PAF into a cranked amp. Such sound waves are greater in SPL magnitude than acoustic sound waves from the strings. Your experiment does not prove that PAF microphony is responsive to string sound waves. Furthermore, by omitting the loading from the guitar's electronics, you changed the pickup's resonant frequency. So you have not demonstrated that PAF microphony contributes in any way to the output of PAF pickups from actual guitar playing.
