There is a difference between a culture and a cult of personality. Underneath the cult of personality is a culture that is consistent with the Southeast Asian heritage. Things like filial piety, drawing a sense of identity from the group as opposed to the individual, and so on. These expressions of culture have been appropriated and instrumentalised by the regime to serve its purposes. It takes a discerning, experienced, and compassionate journalist to understand the nuance and to recognize and respect the culture even in the context of such extreme brutality and fear that is clearly evident in this documentary. @@69ElChistoso

The documentary was simultaneously honest and compelling _(all within the parameters of their government)._ If Kim Jong Un hoped we'd find affection and admiration for North Koreans, he got what he wanted; if CNN hoped to reveal new things about North Korea, it also won. There's a reason Kim Jong Un allows this journalist to keep returning. This report _(or story)_ from Will Ripley is among CNN's best work.
Yeah this is a great summary. Before I say this I want to say that North Korea is probably still a horrible place to live with strict rules and horrible punishments. That being said I thought it was more horrible than this documentary shows. I thought there was barely, if any, entertainment. I thought it focused most of ita energies on production. To see arcades (even though those arcades had ulterior motives), rock climbing, rowing, etc. was surprising. When yhey got out of Pyongyang was more what I expected from the whole country. Even then there were places to dine out. Im not sure how much use these places get without journalists there but the kids didnt seem like they were doing anything out of the norm. Interesting. That is not to say things are fine there its just there is more personal enjoyment in life than I expected.

However she knew the risk she was taking and so rounded off with the usual propaganda. How sad for these people.

North Korea is actually just like any other countries around the world. They actually have hopes, dreams, emotions ,etc but still they're actually living in a different and also ruthless police state.
That farmer lady is smart. She is saying she wants to escape to the US without saying she wants to escape to the US. She knows it might be her opportunity to come with the Americans to the US, but at the same time it might not be the case. So thats actually a good strat to keep her safe while expressing her willingness to go to the USA
2:20 That is a lie! United States of America (USA) did not start the Korean War. North Korea started the Korean War on the 25th June 1950 because North Korea invaded South Korea and ceased after an armistice on the 27th of July 1953.

I believe North Koreans are simply people, just like us. Here it's the government brainwashing what has affected these poor people. I suppose north koreans will just go on living and adoring the Kim family as their one and only God.
My heart aches the more I continue to see that the North Korean people are not free. They deserve freedom and prosperity just like any other human being.
The people of North Korea are free, unlike US citizens. There are no beggars and homeless people there. They have free, housing, education and medicine. after watching all those documentaries about north korea this one produced by CNN definitely surprised me with its premium quality. I have never seen a journalist being allowed to interview so many ordinary north koreans. Literally amazing. I wonder how CNN worked its magic.❤
Will Ripley made a bunch of trips to North Korea over the span of a few years, gaining the trust of his North Korean interlocutors and therefore being allowed increasingly extensive access. But after the failed Hanoi summit and the reaction to the death/murder of Otto Warmbier, the DPRK's outreach strategy changed.
Yeah, in another documentary I heard that no journalist is allowed to enter North Korea.

Agree totally. Great documentary! The country is a total paradox. The people serve the party and the leadership and they seem to be okay with that . That's how badly they have be brainwashed and indoctrinated. In many ways, China is similar but just a little less, but still a dictatorship like North Korea.

I usually don't like CNN but this was one of the best documentaries I've seen on North Korea. The host was gracious and kind He spoke of some of the troubles that are happening there but mostly kept it about the people and not just all the people in poverty. Most videos I've seen are derogatory and it was nice to see a video that showed the kinder side of the people. Thank you for the excellent work.

Then, Stop watching fake fox News
He has genuinely tried to respect and understand the culture, particularly his interaction with children.
The Communist News Network shares the same ideology and cult of personality. Why would you expect them to be hostile to each other?

Well deduced!
Free propaganda boost is what you're saying.
