I think another big problem is that Dortmund doesn't really give own talents from their own academy that can identify with the club a chance. They rather recruit big talents from other countries that have no identification with Dortmund and only see them as a stepping stone for bigger clubs. As good as haaland, Dembele, Bellingham, Adeyemi and more developed in Dortmund, it was always clear that they wouldn't stay for long. This kind of politic won't lead to long-term success
I was thinking the same thing. It has proven pointless for them to leave. Yet Stuttgart has been very good the last month or so. What was Guirassy thinking?! He thought he could go to a Champions League final with Dortmund?! Yah, nice move, buddy :/
Dortmund should have already dethroned Bayern Munich like 10yrs ago. They reached the heights similar to Atletico Madrid but unlike Atletico Madrid, they had a World Class players and a World Class Coach all they needed to do was keep the players and invest more cause Klopp wasn't going anywhere. Atletico Madrid pretty much did that and for some good years they were part of the big 5 and today they can sign players like Julian Alvarez and go head to head with Real Madrid and Barcelona. Dortmund are so unambitious they've never even tried to be better than Bayern like Haaland, Bellingham, Sancho, Dembele, Gundogan, Hakimi.. They should be bigger today.
I'm not sure you understand how different the financial situations are between clubs in Germany. Bayern has twice the budget of Dortmund. Every single year.
@@yaldabaoth2 Is that why Levekusen won the double last year or why they are well in range of bayern currently? This whole "why try, Bayern has twice the fund we have, so we stand no chance" cry baby mentality has transformed this club into a losing organization and laughingstock of a whole country. No one takes Borussia Dortmund seriously. Watzke said it himself:"if Bayern struggle, WE have to be there." In 11 seasons, they struggled 2 times. Dortmund choked both times. Leverkusen has shown it is possible. So this whole money argument that Watzke loves to bring up is no more than a hollow scapecoat for choking.
@ For one, Bayern didn't struggle last season. They had more points than the season before when they were champions. Leverkusen just had a perfect season and don't tell me it had nothing to do with luck. How many times did they score a goal to get points in the 95th minute? 12 times? They are playing well, have a great coach, great players like Wirtz and they did what Dortmund couldn't, all true. But this isn't some paradigm shift in German football.
I'm a dortmund man, in all honesty we haven't really had a stellar coach since Tuchel. The ambition is massively lacking, whether its with the coach selection or recruitment. I totally understand that Dortmund are not a financial powerhouse however look at Brighton, they operate smart and develop their players well. The executive level is where the problem is and their needs to be a dramatic shift in the club culture.
idk why we cant accept that terzic was a good coach for us, he was a haller missed pen away from winning the bundesliga, and got us to a ucl final when we had no world class players
As a Dortmund supporter, I can say this analysis is quite good, respect man. ;) There are a lot of problems and they were already there for the past few seasons, but being ignored. The main problem is, the squad doesn't fit Nuri's playstyle and is very imbalanced. Guirassy doesn't fit as a striker at all, Beier doesn't fit, Couto doesn't fit. They are good for the football Sahin wants to play, but then most of the other players don't fit. I blame the board for bad decision making in the past years, they need to replace these Dortmund guys with people, who have a fresh view on things.
I think Dortmund leadership has always had a fear since the troubled financial days to never get into that situation again and it has kind of cut the ambition of the club. For a long time there seems to be just an acceptance of surrendering to Bayern (look at how many players Bayern have poached) and accepting their lot. Selling some of your best players to keep financially healthy and be able to invest in the squad fine, selling your best players almost every year and often letting them go to your biggest rivals is just poor management. They were kind of getting away with it with some decent recruitment, plucking players like Jude, like Sancho etc. but recruitment has been poorer in the last two to three years and doesn't seem to have much planning to it and that is now biting them.
Loved this video and couldn’t agree more. Just to add to everything is the loss of Ian Maatsen. Another loss defensively especially when it comes to depth and coming off the bench. Brutal.
So true I really wanted to sign maatsen cause we saw what he could do in this squad, we literally had a ‘trial’ run with him and I found him to be a missing piece to the puzzle. I understood the money for him was expensive but we needed a good young player in that position, who we could’ve sold for a profit later. But no, who did we buy for 30 million + in a position we already had a lot of coverage in? Maxi Beier who has done absolutely nothing. Terrible decision making from the team and made me rage back at the start of the season
The problems were there even Tuchel was in charge. That's why he was fighting with the board and the players. Sahin was a player then and he led the faction against Tuchel. The defense has been bad forever. But this is the truth 14:14.
From always supporting Dortmund against big teams, I have now started hoping that they get knocked out in group/league stage only. That's how much they have disappointed me over the years.
As a new Dortmund supporter "just 15 years" i always feel like we are complacent and not hungry for a title or the top. I understand what happened in the early 2000 but omg
@@IDontKnowWhoJoeIs This is just simply not true? Watzke still remains as CEO until fall of 2025 when is contract expires. This means he still holds ''real power''' at the club until September of 2025.
@ Check again? I did and yeah he did step down as CEO. Come one bro you are literally only 1 search away from not spreading misinformation. Watzke stepped down this summer and now only works as a advisor/overseer - tho I stated he holds no real power as reliable journalists like Berger and Pletti stated he didn't even take a say in more important questions, such as Sahin's sacking
I think one Problem is also thet the squad does not fit the way he wants to play. Especially the attacking players. This is no excuse for Sahin as the squad is still a top 3 top 4 squad in the league and instead of trying to impose his system on the players Sahin should try to find a system where he can get the best out of them.
Genuinely think Erik Ten Hag would be a perfect fit for Dortmund. Developing young talent and getting the best out of them while bringing in new ones after you sell them off. Also they need a ''rebuild'' like Ajax did when he joined them. And there wont really be big egos, which we know he wasnt good at managing.
As a United fan, I hope you’re joking. If you already have a poor front office, ETH will be disastrous for you. The guy can’t tell a good footballer from a circus clown. The only reason he succeed at Ajax is because of the solid front office Ajax had at the time. Also Ajax is the biggest richest club in the Netherlands. In German Dortmund is an underdog. It will just expose him again.
@@ezyfnef Agreed. United supporter here too. Dortmund’s major issue is recruitment and squad building. That’s where he had too much say at United. Remember that first season when he would make half time decisions that would win us the game? We were undefeated at home for weeks. Idk what the hell happened from there
@@ezyfnef Re-read your comment again, and notice you didnt actually include any facts but only opinions. Besides, if you were a United fan as you claim to be, you would know Man United is a graveyard for Managers and talented players. Mourinho, Van Gaal, even Moyes weren't bad managers before they went to United, but when they left their reputation was stinted. And winning 2 trophies with those disgraceful players is something to respect in itself.
@ 100% I remember that happening a couple times. Nacho coming off the bench worked wonders for him. Yeah it’s sad when I look at the dross he’s left us with and how this new manager is suffering because of it. 70m for a 30 yr old Casemiro on 300k a week. Legs gone can’t even play right now. Onana is an absolute disgrace of a keeper. 100m and Antony and he’s so bad we sent him on loan just so we don’t have to see his face. 70m for a striker that can’t control a pass. Mason Mount for 60m when he had less than a year left on his contract. I could go on
I’m a spurs fan who has been following BVB for about 10/15 years now and it’s staggering how similar the issues are with both teams from poor decisions by the board and the issues in similar positions on the pitch such as defence (specifically LB/LCB and DM)
Dortmund sort of went the same route as Ajax. Rely on scouting and often scouting gems but are never able to keep their talent. And when their big name players leave they rely on their scouting to replace the players sold. And it obviously isn't sustainable or can't always guarantee success.
Quick visual error mate you showed Beier's stats copy-and-pasted onto Guirassy's slide. Otherwise great video! Very informative on the subject. Hope BvB can turn things around soon now that they've sacked Sahin, and wish him the best wherever he ends up gaining more experience as a manager.
Quick question: Isn't Dortmund fan owned? Why aren't the voting members trying to do anything about 'nepotism hires' and question the board's ambitions?
Errors have been made over a longer period of time, but for this season the most notable ones: Hummels and Reus - both creators and comfortable with the ball left the club with no equivalent replacement. Terzic played a counterpunching style, which suited somewhat okayish to the available players, with some single good creators. With that style you cannot satisfy the ambition to be a top tier club and he squeezed out the maximum. Sahin enters the building and wants to play more ball possession, impossible with the available players. The quality of some players still manages some wins, other players are completely out of form or not suited for top tier competition anymore. Defense is completely bollocks except for Anton and Schlotterbeck. Ryerson is mediocre, but can run. Midfield lacks of quality creators, who are constantly injured or box-to-box runners. The forwards have to rely to much on individual qualities, Gittens, Guirassy & Adeyemi are delivering quite good for the non-existing midfield - but that's like gambling. So what should Sahin do?
So they sacked Sahin. Please remove Ricken too, BVB-homie time should be over now. We shall honor their try to install former players, but they are obviously missing some necessary qualities in each position. Bayern tried it with Kahn & Salihamidzic, they acknowledged their error and installed pros. I like Sammers open criticism, and they should take it seriously, he might even talk clearly towards BVB decision makers. And the good thing, they still have 1,5 weeks to realize some transfers on loan for the rest of the season - main target to put some players under pressure who are too comfortable (and they cannot tell us, that the scouts don't have some dozens of names on their lists, some fitting more, some less. And if the scouts aren't prepared for this situation -> unprofessionals, get rid of them). Let's see, if and when they can turnover.
Bvb fan here. The root cause of bvb's mediocrity is actually watzke and co. 1. The sponsorship with the military manufacturer with no prior sounding to fans is a big blunder 2. The most paid player in salary is Niklas sule. Signed by Sebastian Kehl I think. 3. The culture of "homie jobs" started when watzke created a fake job "technical director" for terzic. Then Kehl got hired etc etc Mark my words, edin terzic is actually a great tactician and once he manage another, properly managed squad, his potential will be unleashed, and bvb's 2024 ucl final run is definitely a miracle, an over achievement.
Kehl I feel like has actually been solid he just keeps getting push back from everyone else like watzke, Terzic, and now mislintat. Kehl wanted to sell Can 2 seasons ago and wanted to keep hummels and sign Edson Alvarez and Dean huijsen who are both doing great. But Terzic and watzke overruled him.
Yea Adrian, Leverkusen's coach is very very experienced and they didn't gamble on him at all.........as usual your having intelligence is top notch.......
You have to recruit for talent and character but you'll pay only for talent. That's why teams with lower budgets can be successful if they are good at character recruiting and squad building.
i feel BVB getting Sahin as an assistant was fair but when the post became available for head coach that's when maybe they rushed him instead of keeping him innthe background. Now they've had to get rid of a club cult hero
11:48 plus I think the fact is he's not as in drenched into history of BVB as well, he's jumped between them and Bayern his whole career adds to the dissidence of his legacy at the club.
Terzic wasn't a "homie hire" at all. In fact, nobody, inside and outside the club, gives him any credit, despite the fact that in 3 seasons, he has a DFB Pokal, was a penalty kick away from a Bundesliga title and a Champions League final.
Champions League football? seems quite straightforward. And he's been at Brighton for a while so why not try a new challenge. Besides, they signed him from the 2. Bundesliga, he was a lower league player, so probably such a chance means even more for him
Nuri Sahin was a huge mistake. Dortmund is way to obsessed to put former players into positions of power. Sahin has no track record and i do not see any potential, honestly he looks like a ball boy in a suite on the sideline, poor body language, poor displays in press conferences.
Dortmund used to be the destination club for the best young talent. Now it seems like they’re struggling to compete against clubs like Leipzig as well as mid table clubs from the premier league. Their overall recruitment has gone downhill, since Bellingham.
Think you might've forgotten the part about our full board revamp that happened this summer. I find it a bit weird to see you criticising the board while showing pictures of Watzke, as if he didn't step down half a year ago
@@CarlManvers2714 Meant step down from his position as CEO. He only works as an advisor/overseer now, and didn't even take a say in the biggest matters - such as sacking Sahin
Sahin didn't have enough time to cut his teeth in Turkey, he needed about 5 years or so to really hone his craft. The board hiring him on a lengthy contract was a big gamble and I don't see it paying off. Better off finding some German lad managing a second division side who has cut his teeth for a half a decade or so, or maybe someone from the Eredivisie. oh well, they made their bed. they'll probably fire him before the end of the season and hire some other untested manager who they feel they can control. (that's why the board brought him in if I had to guess, they don't want a manager complaining about signings, contracts, and other details, the board wants to have executive authority over everything).
I said top goalscorer for that season my friend. Bellingham (14), Brandt (10) & Malen (10) across all competitions that season. I agree, he was their best player as well!
Terzic dormunt team that play the final is different and play very very different compared to this dormunt and if they make the final is was because of him and his tatics
Dortmund is like Chelsea but playing at the Champion league. They just buy young players then force them to adapt. Dont get me wrong I like young players cause of their potential. However you still need some keys experience players to force this project to work. This is the lesson Chelsea should learn if they happened to finish top 4 this season. U cant play a team with a bunch of kids Hope that u will get far in the CL
as a dortmund fan it is a crisis for a title competing team. we're literally falling into mediocrity and the next step of that is fucking schalke and the 2nd league
i watch lots of Bundesliga and seeing Leipzig being a joke this season in the UCL at least in the Bundesliga they are hanging in 5th well within a shot at UCL if they improve just a bit by end season? Dortmund league form is dismal while in the UCL they have been decent but i saw that Bologna game and their poor game management domestically is now carrying over in the UCL!
Honestly BVB is one of the teams with the worst kind of mentality from top to bottom that I have ever seen. For me the Favre era was the epitome of that mediocrity where "being the best after Bayern" was taken as a success for the club. There are also no questions about how their ressources are used, Bellingham was sold for over 100 million, players like Haaland, Pulisic and Sancho also left a lot of money yet those earnings have not been used to develop the squad further.
Dortmund have spend probably more than 150 million on attacking talents and almost none of them made a lasting impact. Haller, Fullkrug, Malen, Adeyemi just to name few.
They mainly buy good players, who do not fit into their System and then complain when they flop. A classic Dortmund move is buying strikers who only work in a two striker Formation and then use them either as a Single striker or on the wings.
The case of Haller is really special. How did the doctors not notice cancer before letting him sign a contract? What exactly do those doctors do for a living?

Atletico Madrid pretty much did that and for some good years they were part of the big 5 and today they can sign players like Julian Alvarez and go head to head with Real Madrid and Barcelona.
Dortmund are so unambitious they've never even tried to be better than Bayern like Haaland, Bellingham, Sancho, Dembele, Gundogan, Hakimi.. They should be bigger today.
That team would have been deadly
I'm not sure you understand how different the financial situations are between clubs in Germany. Bayern has twice the budget of Dortmund. Every single year.
They constantly feel like they owe Bayern. Hummels gotze lewandowski. You cant win the league selling your prized assets every season
We're so bad it's unreal. Sahin is probably being fired as we speak, given we somehow lost to Bologna. 💀
a team who didn't score a single UCL goal from open play until this day, don't forget
Respect Bologna (??)
They are a good team.
He has been fired
@@KBJ16 they have not been, 0 ucl knockout goals
Small correction, Holstein Kiel is second to last and not last place. I live there btw. ;)
No need to apologize
Bochum will get 2 extra points due to the game against Union so Kiel are in fact last of Bundesliga
what he should have said is they are the worst ever team to play in the bundesliga. its the mother of all terrible defeats if you are 0:3 at halftime
remember when the Danes thought they had possession of Schleswig & Holstein? lol
Auf gehts Störche
nice that youtube suggested this video to me, kind of refreshing to hear an international take on the matter as a german fan of the bundesliga
Who's here after Nuri Şahin got sacked?
I was about to say that
As a Dortmund supporter, I can say this analysis is quite good, respect man. ;) There are a lot of problems and they were already there for the past few seasons, but being ignored.
Terrible decision making from the team and made me rage back at the start of the season
ooh.. i thought nobody noticed it. Glad to see someone is talking about it. Thank you.
They can't win shit
As a new Dortmund supporter "just 15 years" i always feel like we are complacent and not hungry for a title or the top.
I understand what happened in the early 2000 but omg
The Problems go waaaay deeper than this Video has shown
You haven't talked about the main issue
Hans Joachim Watzke
Maybe because he stepped down as CEO and no longer holds any real power at the club?
We lost to Bologna. Now we really need change.
Actually Bologna is in great form right now, its dominating games in serie A too
It hits different, when it‘s your club that is starring in your „Problem“ Video. Great work as always!
He does look like a good fit for dortmund but remember the last time they hired a ajax boss back 2017? Yeah it didn't go well.
I could go on
Nice video. Well explained and all on point.
Also not playing there best midfielder in sabitzer or playing him out of position when he does is huge as he was one of their best players last year
Their
nmecha is better?
I’m a spurs fan who has been following BVB for about 10/15 years now and it’s staggering how similar the issues are with both teams from poor decisions by the board and the issues in similar positions on the pitch such as defence (specifically LB/LCB and DM)
hey, ist Adrian, talking about his favorite (for whatever reason) football League, nice^^
even though Im a bayern fan its hard to see this. I want more compition for the league as well.
Leverkusen wird wieder Meister!
Dortmund sort of went the same route as Ajax.
Rely on scouting and often scouting gems but are never able to keep their talent. And when their big name players leave they rely on their scouting to replace the players sold. And it obviously isn't sustainable or can't always guarantee success.
I would love seeing Bo Henriksen taking over from the summer
Quick visual error mate you showed Beier's stats copy-and-pasted onto Guirassy's slide. Otherwise great video! Very informative on the subject. Hope BvB can turn things around soon now that they've sacked Sahin, and wish him the best wherever he ends up gaining more experience as a manager.
IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS
I’ve been waiting for this video! I’m glad it’s finally recognized how awful Dortmund have been. I love them but my gosh it’s tough out there
i hate to see my club failing like that.....
Hummels literally had his best season ever last year and they didn’t bring him back despite needing defensive options and leadership
Need a podcast format so I can listen to these while I’m in office
Aaaand, he's gone
top analysis... dortmund are in such a crisis it's crazy
Quick question: Isn't Dortmund fan owned? Why aren't the voting members trying to do anything about 'nepotism hires' and question the board's ambitions?
aanndd...... Sahin has already been released by the club
1. The sponsorship with the military manufacturer with no prior sounding to fans is a big blunder
2. The most paid player in salary is Niklas sule. Signed by Sebastian Kehl I think.
3. The culture of "homie jobs" started when watzke created a fake job "technical director" for terzic. Then Kehl got hired etc etc
Mark my words, edin terzic is actually a great tactician and once he manage another, properly managed squad, his potential will be unleashed, and bvb's 2024 ucl final run is definitely a miracle, an over achievement.
master tactician is a stretch but not a bad manager by any means, i just feel we lost gold in search of diamond in a way with terzic and his playstyle
Would love to see De Zerbi coaching this side
You have to recruit for talent and character but you'll pay only for talent. That's why teams with lower budgets can be successful if they are good at character recruiting and squad building.
I think Kobel will leave for the Prem really soon, Nico Schlotterbeck was the best Transfer Dortmund did in years, a big guy for the future
i feel BVB getting Sahin as an assistant was fair but when the post became available for head coach that's when maybe they rushed him instead of keeping him innthe background. Now they've had to get rid of a club cult hero
11:48 plus I think the fact is he's not as in drenched into history of BVB as well, he's jumped between them and Bayern his whole career adds to the dissidence of his legacy at the club.
Being a dortmund fan is consistently the most stressful aspect of my day to day life
Here after surin is sacked
1:53 This really aged very well. Bologna 2-1 BVB.
Terzic wasn't a "homie hire" at all. In fact, nobody, inside and outside the club, gives him any credit, despite the fact that in 3 seasons, he has a DFB Pokal, was a penalty kick away from a Bundesliga title and a Champions League final.
I can’t understand why Pascal Gross left Brighton last summer to go their TBH.
I don't understand is why they played gross in right back spot
Champions League football? seems quite straightforward. And he's been at Brighton for a while so why not try a new challenge. Besides, they signed him from the 2. Bundesliga, he was a lower league player, so probably such a chance means even more for him
I think he personally actually was a fan of Borussia Dortmund since when he was young. He also had an offer from Frankfurt last summer.
How many league titles and European Cups have Brighton ever won?
And less than 24hours he’s gone. They will need to make the next choice right
Nuri Sahin was a huge mistake. Dortmund is way to obsessed to put former players into positions of power. Sahin has no track record and i do not see any potential, honestly he looks like a ball boy in a suite on the sideline, poor body language, poor displays in press conferences.
never knew ethan page made football vids.
Dortmund used to be the destination club for the best young talent. Now it seems like they’re struggling to compete against clubs like Leipzig as well as mid table clubs from the premier league. Their overall recruitment has gone downhill, since Bellingham.
I'm from Antalya and I wish Nuri Şahin stayed there, as the city was once again close to European competitions
Great watch 🫡
Think you might've forgotten the part about our full board revamp that happened this summer. I find it a bit weird to see you criticising the board while showing pictures of Watzke, as if he didn't step down half a year ago
He's still a part of the board and the decision making group. He won't fully leave until after this year.
We just a soulless body of that Dortmund in 2013, depressing
Bellingham wasn't Dortmund's best goalscorer. But he definitely was their best player
I said top goalscorer for that season my friend. Bellingham (14), Brandt (10) & Malen (10) across all competitions that season. I agree, he was their best player as well!
@@RabonaTV oh shit you are right! I looked it up before I made the comment even:D somehow my brain only saved the 8 bundesliga goals
Terzic dormunt team that play the final is different and play very very different compared to this dormunt and if they make the final is was because of him and his tatics
Dortmund
Because of black magic
The only keeping off the deep end is Manchester United suffering.
As the saying goes misery loves company

Thought of you right after the Benfica - Barca game. Did you leave Twitter?
so glad that dortmund finally decided to sack sahin,as a dortmund fan,we deserve a better coach
I didn’t even know Sahin was a manager I’ve lost track of dortmund
Everyone had high hopes for Sahin because of Xabi Alonso and Thiago Motta recently
Aaand sacked. I don't think he was ready for this level anyways.
My dream XI: Kobel - Faye, Bisseck, Schlotterbeck - Timber - Gittens, Nmecha, Tillman, Estupiñan - Gimenez, Schade
Bench: Meyer, Süle, Bensebaini, Kabar, Ryerson, Bajcetic, Alcaraz, Groß, Sabitzer, Brandt, Duranville, Beier, Guirassy
Coach: Matthias Jaissle/Matarazzo (but what if he'd last till the end of the season)
I watched the game today they barely use the midfield and just send long balls you have midfielders like Reyna braint grob can use them properly
thanks for pointing out brand as a non-leader
Its always a crisis with this guy. This account ain’t worth it no more
as a dortmund fan it is a crisis for a title competing team. we're literally falling into mediocrity and the next step of that is fucking schalke and the 2nd league
they should hire inzaghi to fix their issues im not joking think about it
Back after Sahin sacking, he called it
5:05 *Arent Madrid C.F Top of la Liga Right Now?*
Bologna just won, schlotterbeck made a huge mistake and the energy wasn’t there
i watch lots of Bundesliga and seeing Leipzig being a joke this season in the UCL at least in the Bundesliga they are hanging in 5th well within a shot at UCL if they improve just a bit by end season? Dortmund league form is dismal while in the UCL they have been decent but i saw that Bologna game and their poor game management domestically is now carrying over in the UCL!
Would love to get your thoughts on Spurs right now.
NURI SAHIN HAS BEEN SACKED
And now the lost to Bologna 2-1
Americans should never talk about football to a public audience.
The lost again today vs Bologna after scoring an early penalty
Lowkey hoping for a Dortmund downfall so we can sign Kobel. But as a football fan, it kinda sucks to see
Did you just say massive?
What they saw in Sahin? Why that's obvious. His name ofc
Dortmund might be about to take the Schalke fate with the leadership fighting over power in the club.
ANDDDDD he’s sacked 😂
Sahin is GONE!
They just sacked the coach
Honestly BVB is one of the teams with the worst kind of mentality from top to bottom that I have ever seen. For me the Favre era was the epitome of that mediocrity where "being the best after Bayern" was taken as a success for the club. There are also no questions about how their ressources are used, Bellingham was sold for over 100 million, players like Haaland, Pulisic and Sancho also left a lot of money yet those earnings have not been used to develop the squad further.
Dortmund is somewhat reliant on sales to meet its operating expenditures, so any assumption that all sales can be reinvested in the squad is false.
They just sacked the manager.
I think Eric Ten Hag would be a great manager at BVB.
Dortmund did lose to Bologna 2-1
After Sahin made a defensive sub. Deja vu if there ever was one.
They sell all their talent every year which is why they will never win a bundesliga again.
