I mean, they ran through 10 people first. He's never meant to be put in that position at all. If you're going to say he lost the money for that kick, you might as well say he lost if for not scoring a goal from defence in the first 5 minutes of the game as well. Ain't his job.
He was going to be released after the play off final regardless, the penalty made no difference. Still also feel sorry for him though, don't get me wrong

Marc Batra was forever doomed in Spain after the 2014 Copa del Rey final against Real Madrid. No one remembers he scored the equalizer (being a CB) after Madrid went 1 - 0 up. People only remember his disastrous run being completely outpaced by Gareth Bale for the 2 - 1 in the 87th minute. After that, he went from being a very promising La Masia graduate to being forever labelled as a "soft defender". He left Barcelona one year later, and despite he was good enough for a while for both Dortmund and Betis, I doubt he's ever returned to the Spanish national team. What a shame...
He also had to endure the post negreira age. If you see at how Busquets and Pique defended, they had the handicap of never getting called on their fouls, but Bartra actually had to properly defend. He was very good in my eyes, and there were like three or four defenders that would be able to keep the pace of Bale in that play.
Neven Subotic was a regular starter at Dortmund for years. His reputation was damaged after Guardiola recognized him as the weakness in their defense and instructed Ribery to allways put pressure on him. Later on he gave away a penalty against Ribery that lost the game
Sunderland had an awful squad at the time and been stinking out the place for a number of years, it was not just Johnson. Great fans at the club who deserved better. Hopefully better times to come.
In the defence of Larius Karius. He was suffering from concussion after he was fouled and should have been substituted. As a result, the responsibility lies on the shoulders of the Liverpool bench
Absolutely gutted for how Karius’ career has developed. He was amazing at Mainz. Could’ve mentioned the elbow hit he had gotten from Ramos earlier that match. Maybe this has ignited your interest in Mainz 05? It’d be great to finally have a video on the club that is closest to my heart, and there have been several extraordinary stories, especially from the 90s onwards
Alexandre Jankewitz got sent off in the first two minutes of Southampton's famous 9-0 loss to Man Utd and was never seen again. We had high hopes for him and then chucked him in the bin.

For Nery Castillo, he is also infamous for a press conference here in Mexico. They say he arrived late for a game against costa rica and smelling like alcohol. When being questioned about it and the bad moment at the time of the Mexican team, he said a lot of things, but the one that stick was something he said directly at a reporter: "You know what is the difference? The difference is that I'm playing in Europe and you'll be always stay here in Mexico" From that press conference onwards, his carrer went downhill. Would've loved if you included this on your video!
Honestly as a Mexican, Nery was right in that regard because the media and reporters in Mexico are terrible. They criticize everyone even if they’re good people or are playing good and they create false rumors about Mexican players and football all the time
A Brazilian here... never heard of Moacir Barbosa. Brazilians talk about the defeat to Uruguay in our own soil as a tragedy just because of that... it happened there. I don't remember anyone ever making it about the goalkeeper.
Karius very likely had concussion in that 2018 final. Which made me think, you should do a video on CTE/Dementia in footballers. Was really sad to see the news about Dean Windass
Karius and Higuain are two definite victims of head concussion not being cared for during a final. Also the agressors not being expelled from the match
19:26 Man, there are a couple of reasons that I love your channel, but I think that the one that really hits home is that you are one of the very few European commentators that talk about South American football, and not only South American players in Europe. I was really surprised that you included Barbosa on this list, and as a Brazilian I really appreciate it. One aspect that I would further comment on his situation is that, besides his role in the Maracanazzo, a very significant part of the heat that he received from the population later on his life stemmed from the color of his skin. Brazil was the last country in the Americas to abolish slavery, and even though we are far from perfect nowadays, the situation was waaaay worse back when Barbosa was active. Fortunately, Vasco da Gama fans do an amazing job in rehabilitating his image (at the very least to themselves), as they are a club deeply associated with this issue here in Brazil.
Alexander Filimonov - goalkeeper of Spartak Moscow and Russia national team. Russia needed a win against Ukraine during Euro 2000 qualifiers(back then the countries were just rivals and "frenemies", before Putler started his insane policy). Russia led 1-0, but Filimonov conceded a goal on 88th minutes from a ball that fell from his hands after an easy freekick. After that he played just 4 matches for a national team and never played as well as he played before on club level
Most people hated Russia then too especially politically as Russia still controlled Russia and exploiting Ukraine's wealth, also because of the invasion of Georgia and Moldova.. there was always hatred for Russia since the holomdomor or the ten million dead by Stalin.
It was even more dramatic because Russia botched those qualifiers and needed 5 wins in a row to get to the play-offs. And the Russians got 4 of them (including beating France on Stade de France) - and the last match was this one. A damn tie. That's why Filimonov got so much hate for that blunder.
@@kristaskrastina2863 well, and the amount of hate he got was also multiplied by the factor of at least twelve due to the opposition they’ve played against that evening. Russians, with their megalomaniacal self-depiction as “the big brothers” of every ex-soviet republic, always HATED losing against them, especially against Ukraine, be it on a pitch, in a boxing ring or on a battlefield.
If you have Ginola in you should have Duncan Ferguson, Duncan was playing in Scotland when he headbutted a defender he was sent off and sent to prison and never played for Scotland again
Scotland did want him back, but Ferguson refused. Apparently he later regretted his decision to boycott the Scotland team. Could defo do with someone like him in the team now! It’s 1 position we are struggling with.
Would be quite cool to have a video on the 10 most outrageous/unique things to happen on live tv football matches in the top leagues (football or non-football related)
I know Barbosa because the brazillians and brazil had a trauma on black braziliian players, that it affected the early career of Dida, another black brazillian GK. It all stemmed to this game you mentioned.
Sadly massive difference in white and black players on Brasil, white Brazilians like dunga, kaka,Leonardo, zico, riverlino all come from backgrounds while black players always come from poverish. Some teams don't recruit poor players as they have to pay big money for academy's. That why in the 90s and early 2000s lots of players with fake identitys, ereberto who played for chievo probably most famous.
Ali Dia claimed to be a cousin of George Weah who was world footballer of the year in 1996 and was promptly signed by then Southampton manager Graham Souness made 1 appearance and never played again apparently
That's a well known one, but at the same time, the guy never had a career to begin with, lol. I think I heard he did sign for some seriously lower league clubs after? But certainly he was just a conman
A great shout would have been the WC 2018 group stage game between Spain and Portugal, where the Ronaldo hat trick shattered De Gea' s confidence perpetually and although he went on to have a stellar career, won the golden glove in EPL and doing wonders for Fiorentina, his career was never the same.
I am one of the nearly 2 million Brazilians that make up a whopping 0.9% of this channel's audience and I can confirm that I, a man, look exactly like the Brazilian woman pictured in the video.
Barbosa is a truly heartbreaking story and his treatment in Brazil genuinely abhorrent. He was a very good goalkeeper who made 1 misjudgement and deserved far better from history than he got. I'd also include Peter Bonetti who was an excellent keeper still regularly voted England's worst on the basis of 1 poor game he played in rusty form after a month's lay off in 1970. 🤔
My perception of Houllier (that he is an ar$ehole) is forever coloured by that quote about of Ginola. Hanging a young player out to dry to cover his own failings, like Hoddle did to Beckham in 1998. Houllier could’ve done a better job in that campaign so that a single misplaced cross wouldn’t have left France out of the World Cup and Hoddle would probably have won multiple world cups as both a player and manager if he’d simply been a better person in his previous life. Fannies.
Great video, the only thing that should have been mentioned is Karius' concussion, as many other comments already said. If the Liverpool staff would have had that knowledge, purely out of medical reasons he should have been subbed off, cuz your brain is most vulnerable to significant damage right after already recieving a concussion. But it most likely affected his performance negatively as well, and in these situations reacting just a fraction of a second too late, or having some spatial/visual distortion at a bad moment is enough to lose the game. There's official statements by the doctors that examined him that suggest his ability to play might have been compromised.
As a Napoli supporter, I have hated few players more than Simone Zaza. First, he was the catalyst for Juventus's 2015/16 Serie A win, where his injury time winner against us cost us the top of the table which we wouldn't see for the rest of the season, and then made an ass of himself at the whole country's expense for the whole world to see at the Euros. I wouldn't be lying if I said I enjoyed every single moment of his downfall after that skied penalty, and even if seeing the replays and memes haunted me, knowing that moment caused his career to go off the rails still gives me immense schadenfreude. At least Giovanni Simeone fully redeemed himself in my eyes after joining us and becoming an Ole Gunnar Solskjaer level supersub in our 2022/23 Scudetto run. That being said, Ginola and Karius both got done dirtier than a Land Rover going through the Indian jungle.
Alfie, your sense of humor is only getting better and better! Makes the videos even more enjoyable. You should try to do a collab with John Green, he's a huge football nerd just as yourself. Worth a shot
Brazilian here (probably the most active viewer amongst them). It’s hard to mesure how damaging and unfair that game was to Barbosa, mostly due to racism. He was completely destroyed by the media, which at the time was incredibly racist and his image was severely damaged in the public’s eyes, again, due to racism, so much so that a stereotype, very popular in Brazil to this day, was created, which is “black goalkeepers are not reliable” and even so many decades after that game black goalkeepers are very rarely ever given a shot at the Brazilian National team.
I’m a United fan and honestly, even I felt a little bit bad for Karius at the end of the game. You just knew it would be a psychological mount Everest to climb
Sergio Ramos committed GBH twice in one game, deliberately injuring Salah (broken shoulder) and deliberately elbowing Karius in the face (concussion), as everyone had already come to expect from the most ill-disciplined footballer in the history of football in Europe, and the most overrated player in the history of football across the world.
The people complaining about missing the concussion on Karius are missing the point of the list. It's not that the players careers were ruined by their own fault. It's just about "was their career forever ruined after the game." Even though he was conussed, his confidence was shattered, and his career was ruined. Therefore, he should be top spot on this list.

I’m afraid the Premier League will ruin a lot of players. I remember a story told By Peter Crouch who claimed that Steven Gerrard could ruin a players reputation in a single training session he was that good. The Premier league is another level entirely, and is even better since Gerrard retired,
just injury crisis and a manager who can only play a certain way. And midtable teams are generally good this season so Spurs are lower than usual. It's not really worthy of a video unless Spurs actually finish in this position
Maicosuel at Udinese is a great example, came in as a hyped up prospect from Brazil nicknamed "O Mago" (the magician), taking a penalty against Braga in the final playoff game against Braga, where he brandished what can only be described as the most pathetic panenka anyone's ever seen. Udinese lost the game and havent been back since, and Maicosuel played another few poor seasons before he vanished.

You left out the part where Karius got smashed in the head by Sergio Ramos shortly before that string of mistakes and was later diagnosed with a concussion. If anyone was to blame, it was Ramos, who got away with it like he usually does
If Karius can be number 1 despite having suffered a concussion that game then Raul Jimenez should also be on the list because of that skull injury in 2020
Great video! But you forgot Martin Demichelis. I forget the game, but he cocked up badly, was subbed out and left the PL shortly after and quit something like 1,5 years later
Hi Alfie, I’m a big fan Can you make a video about Vietnam National Team’s recent success (AFF Championship Winner, Rafaelson as the top scorer, Kim-Sang Sik’s masterpiece) ?
I remember a Brazilian friend telling me that the Moacir legacy was so bad it essentially became taboo to have a black goalie start for the national team. And generally black players being seen as field players while goalie was seen as a white position. To this day all World Cup winning squads had white goalies as starters and backups (Dida being the only exception in 2002 but he never played in the tournament). Imagine tarnishing your legacy so badly people start treating your position based on race.
Not really. Sancho also got a bad argument when Erik ten Hag was Manchester United coach, which is the reason he was loaned to Borussia Dortmund and eventually played for Chelsea right now. Marcus Rashford, who also missed his own spotkick in Euro 2020 Final, sometimes had an ups and downs when it comes to his performance on the pitch.
Idea for a video - Which premier league teams, using their first team players, would have the best 4-4-2 formation with wingers attacking and crossing all the time, and two strikers up front, like football used to be played in England.
To be fair, Stepanovs somehow made amends for his reputation by being crucial in Latvia's unexpected qualification to 2004 UEFA Euro. As you may remember, Latvia didn't have an attractive football at that time, but their defensive cohesion was particular impressive for being such underdogs. That was a keystone for that brief "golden age" of Latvian football, combined with the short yet effective, prolific form of Maris Verpakovskis, whose club career wasn't particular impressive overall, yet his quick runs and finishing in counterattacks were like bread and butter for Latvia NT. At 2004 Euro, they failed to make an impact in the group stage, but the goaless draw against Germany was still creditable, with both Stepanovs and Zemlinskis being extremely solid, and Verpakovskis being a headache for German D-Line. Furthermore, I recall Latvia were denied of two penalties that day, one of which was quite notorious.
as a dortmund fan i remember i feel sad when lahm retired. yes, he's our rival captain but he's one of the best player i've ever seen to play and having play the same position as me that just grows my respect even more. even at his last season i reckon he can still squeeze 2-3 years if he wanted to but he chose to retire.
Talking about Karius and not talking about the thug Ramos who literally gave him a concussion beforehand is absolutely ridiculous. Sorry Alfie but that was a huge huge blunder. No way Karius would have made these mistakes if it wasn’t for Ramos‘ elbow. If there is a story in that game the story is how Real gets away with anything, even deliberately injuring two players in a UCL final
Raphael Varane is the first name that came to mind after Karius. 2020 UCL Round of 16 Second Leg v Man City. Ramos injured, Varane needed to step up. Despite his incredible career in Madrid, the last paragraph of the Real Madrid section of his Wikipedia reads: “During the Champions League, Madrid were eliminated in the round of 16 by Manchester City. In the second leg at the City of Manchester Stadium, Manchester, Madrid lost the game 2-1, with Varane being deemed to be at fault for both goals. The mistakes committed by the Frenchman were due to the high pressuring from Gabriel Jesus which led to Varane losing possession of the ball both times. He has since apologised for his mistakes.” He left in 2021 for Manchester United, never regained his form, and retired from football within 4 years of this game.
There is a subset of players who ruined their careers in 90 minutes but not because of a poor performance or being scapegoated, like those 7. Their careers ended because of serious infractions during the match that lead to lifetime or very long bans. Such as Roberto Rojas or some footballers caught up in match fixing or gamble scams.
We need to get a what on Earth is going on video on Dortmund (again), we're currently 10th in the Bundesliga and we have 1 win in 8 matches, you can well explain our failed transfer policy and the baffling decisions surrounding our former, current and next manager
Borussia Dortmund this season is very similar to what happened on the last season under Jurgen Klopp (14/15 season). They were even in a relegation zone during the first half, even sitting last place, but eventually finished 7th at the end.
Maybe do a reverse video next, where players had amazing breakout games or international tournaments which earned them big money moves and hype, only to later fail at the big stage, since you love tearing ppl down so much 😏 Great video btw!
Lots of other commenters have already mentioned the Karius concussion, so I don't need to say it. Instead, I'll be pointing at another Maicon who may not have ruined his entire career in one match but certainly ruined his time at that club in one match. Maicon had been a long time CB for Porto and by 2015-16 he had been voted Dragão do Ano and was club captain. Then came a match at home against Arouca where he didn't look particularly good in Arouca's first goal, then made a blunder which led to Arouca's second goal and left the pitch claiming he was injured after that. He was subbed off under a choir of boos, didn't play for Porto again and ruined his legacy there.
I was at anfield for Karius' first game back after that final. He came on against Roma in a pre-season friendly. The whole stadium gave him a massive reception. We felt terrible for the guy.... Bless him.
That Maicon take off extremely harsh and not deserved. Despite Bale scoring a second-half hat-trick, Inter Milan were one man up and leading 4-0 after some 20 minutes and ended up winning 4-3. More importantly, two of Bale's goals came in added time, and given their comfortable lead it seems obvious that Inter just weren't paying that much attention anymore. They had even stopped attacking seriously after their fourth goal...
It's worth mentioning Karius played with a concussion for a large part of the final. It likely affected him quite a bit

He was very good in my eyes, and there were like three or four defenders that would be able to keep the pace of Bale in that play.
@@juanjoseph wasn't it still Negreira? Like, wasn't the Negreira thing going on until 2018 or so? Bartra left in 2016, right?

Always a good day when Alfie uploads a new video!
Neven Subotic was a regular starter at Dortmund for years. His reputation was damaged after Guardiola recognized him as the weakness in their defense and instructed Ribery to allways put pressure on him. Later on he gave away a penalty against Ribery that lost the game
With Adam Johnson he didn't just ruin his career, it felt like he ruined the whole football club with how fast they crashed and burnt
theyre just sunderland mate
Sunderland had an awful squad at the time and been stinking out the place for a number of years, it was not just Johnson. Great fans at the club who deserved better. Hopefully better times to come.
To be fair to Kepa he's doing a solid job at Bournemouth. Fair play to him.
Yeah, but the most expensive GK in the history of football shouldn't be playing for Bournemouth tbh
Unlike these examples, Alfie's career is going strong. Easily one of the best youtubers we have.
In the defence of Larius Karius. He was suffering from concussion after he was fouled and should have been substituted. As a result, the responsibility lies on the shoulders of the Liverpool bench
Zaza left a massive legacy. His penalty is a source of great inspiration for every Brazilian national team player today.
We had high hopes for him and then chucked him in the bin.
didn't he hand in a transfer request himself, though? I remember hearing that he was pushing for a transfer already before even playing in this game
Georgios Katidis, captained Greece U-17, U-19 and U-21 national teams and at the height of his fame when so many foreign clubs were looking to sign him, he decided he was cool with a certain toothbrush mustachio Villain. Haven't heard from him since, what an idiot.
I recall Alfie mentioning Katidis in a different video years back
did we just ignore that most likely Karius was concussed after a eating an elbow from Ramos ?
Yep, seems like we did, just like the referee of that game 🙃
Karius should’ve asked for a sub though, I really can’t understand why he didn’t.

For Nery Castillo, he is also infamous for a press conference here in Mexico.
They say he arrived late for a game against costa rica and smelling like alcohol.
When being questioned about it and the bad moment at the time of the Mexican team, he said a lot of things, but the one that stick was something he said directly at a reporter:
"You know what is the difference? The difference is that I'm playing in Europe and you'll be always stay here in Mexico"
From that press conference onwards, his carrer went downhill.
Would've loved if you included this on your video!
Not really. Nery was right in that regard. Mexican press is awful.
Castillo's downfall was more likelye to do with his terrible marriage
@@juanjoseph Oh I agree lol the mexican press is the worst.
@juanjoseph I didn't know about Higuain, will go look it up
Wait, totally forgot about Neuer pulling a Schumacher
I believe you
Alexander Filimonov - goalkeeper of Spartak Moscow and Russia national team.
Putler btw, found the Ukrainian jew lover
Most people hated Russia then too especially politically as Russia still controlled Russia and exploiting Ukraine's wealth, also because of the invasion of Georgia and Moldova.. there was always hatred for Russia since the holomdomor or the ten million dead by Stalin.
He was Beach Football WC champion though!
Dabo didn't ruin his career in 90 minutes if it was a penalty after 120 minutes or play.
On Woodgate, the "getting two yellows and then sent off", I wanted to say that the sent-off bit was implied, but then I remembered Graham Poll exists
lmao
If you have Ginola in you should have Duncan Ferguson, Duncan was playing in Scotland when he headbutted a defender he was sent off and sent to prison and never played for Scotland again
Scotland did want him back, but Ferguson refused. Apparently he later regretted his decision to boycott the Scotland team.
Could defo do with someone like him in the team now! It’s 1 position we are struggling with.
Have to feel for Karius. He literally had a concussion all game after the head injury. Fella didn’t even know what he was doing all game

Would be quite cool to have a video on the 10 most outrageous/unique things to happen on live tv football matches in the top leagues (football or non-football related)
Or players who's careers looked like they were definitely over and they made it back all the way to the very top
Jack Grealish being punched by a Birmingham City fan then scoring the winner for karma
Hey Alfie, can you make a video about Syrian football, given everything that happened in the last 14 years. Thank you.
The sad thing about Karius in that game was that he was the reason Liverpool were still in the game. He made some amazing saves up to those snafus
Lpool supports love throwing the phrase "YNWA" around, when you look at how they treated Karius that day, it means nothing
Its crazy that Gareth Bale is responsible (at least partly) for two guys downfall in this list
Barbosa was never the same man
I am one of the nearly 2 million Brazilians that make up a whopping 0.9% of this channel's audience and I can confirm that I, a man, look exactly like the Brazilian woman pictured in the video.
Great video as always Alfie, Would be interesting to see one covering the opposite end about players who’s career’s blew up in 90 minutes
Freddy Adu, who’s career lasted 90 minutes.
I don't get your point tbh, the match ruined his career, which is what this list is. Wether it was his fault or not its completely irrelevant
I remember after the Champions League final Oliver Kahn stated that a moment like this can break a goalkeeper career and it unfortunately came true.

The point isn't that he shouldn't be top, just that the context for his bad game is worth mentioning to be fair to Karius
@@spiderextremegamertamonois He didn't qualify any of the other ones, why would he do it solely for Karius.

Would the missed penalty by Jadon Sancho in 2021's Euro final be such a career-defining moment? I doubt he's ever been as good since...
The 90 minutes that ruined Ginola were the combined duration of all of the times I saw his L'Oréal ads during breaks on ITV and Channel 4.

Talking about Karius and not talking about the thug Ramos who literally gave him a concussion beforehand is absolutely ridiculous. Sorry Alfie but that was a huge huge blunder. Very unfair to not mention Karius´ concussion in that match. Seems even intentional considering how well known that fact is.
Raphael Varane is the first name that came to mind after Karius. 2020 UCL Round of 16 Second Leg v Man City. Ramos injured, Varane needed to step up. Despite his incredible career in Madrid, the last paragraph of the Real Madrid section of his Wikipedia reads:
“During the Champions League, Madrid were eliminated in the round of 16 by Manchester City. He has since apologised for his mistakes.”
He left in 2021 for Manchester United, never regained his form, and retired from football within 4 years of this game.

Bless him.
Please do a video on the best managers with the least senior managerial experience
