    I'm a saxophonist but I have always have a deep fascination in the bassoon. It is a very interesting and complicated instrument to play and I would love to learn more about it.

    Puchner (pűshner, btw, I got to meet the Old Man, Josef himself when stationed in Germany) is the BEST horn I've ever played.

    Dang, this video made me realize how crappy the bassoon I have really is, but it is a rental from my high school so I guess that's expected. I have a lot of problems with my bottom whisper key so that lock would be great for me, and I don't have any of the extra trill keys, the high D key, or the rollers on my thumb keys. I might have to start saving some money so I can get one of these for college.

    Hey Eryn, I was going to message you on FB but decided that was too personal considering we don't know each other. I'm a Bassoon performance major and have only played on a Fox 220 and a Moosmann M24. I'm plan on buying a new bassoon in the next year or so. What are you experiences with Puchner? I've never played one, and of course everyone says Heckel is the best, but is Heckel really the best or is that just an opinion?

    • @erynoft
      @erynoft  6 лет назад +2

      Hi there- You can message me on FB. No worries. I've enjoyed my Puchners. I own two of them and both have a HUGE Sound. But I have also played on Puchners that have a smaller sound. Before I owned my Puchner I owned a Fox 201. I found that when I moved to Puchner I had a richer color palette, a wider variety of sounds to play with but with the greater density of colors comes greater flexibility. I found I had to make the same jump when I moved to my Heckel. Greater colors but greater flexibility. I find it is best to match the bassoonist to the instrument and brand. Too much flexibility can cause some players to not be as stable and not play as well as they would on an instrument with less tone colors. Just my two cents. I would love to hear what you end up buying! Keep me posted.

    I know you don't like playing in your videos, but this one screams for it. After seeing all the bells and whistles we're dying to HEAR them!

      I totally understand. The opening sound clip is me playing this bassoon! You can hear more of it on the Vintage sound clips on my website www.erynoft.com. And you can hear my Heckel on my recent album: Eryn Oft Out of the Box, available on all streaming services. :)

    I just got a brand new Fox 220 bassoon and it came with a brand new Marcus Bonna case. Do you have any thoughts on how sturdy it is? I am going to a music school next year and I’m not sure if this will be sturdy enough for normal use in between classes.

    Do you have a video out on how to break in a new reed? I'm curious what you play and how often you play on a new reed until it's considered performance ready. Thank you!

    • @erynoft
      @erynoft  8 лет назад +1

      Hi Andy, I have a bit on the three tiered scrape for the tip of a reed but I have yet to film a vlog style scrape and break in a reed over a few weeks video. Let me see if I can get that done over the holiday break, maybe? :)

    I studied bassoon with Sid Rosenberg in the early 80s. I haven't played for years, but am very interested in getting back into it. I've been completely out of it for YEARS! Any hints on where I could find a decent horn to buy? Not looking for top of the line as it would be more hobby.... And price range I can expect? Thanks!

      Jonahtnan Rio I have a blog on mass market Bassoon’s for $5000 or less on my website. And I did sound comparisons in the video. I also have another blog on used Bassoons and what to watch out for. If you’d like to spend more money send me a message and I will see what I can dig up. erynoft.com/2016/10/02/nobel-bassoons/

      Thanks so much! I live in Brazil now and will be going to the US next year. I might be in the market when I go up for a visit to see what's available. I'm doing some research and your information is GREAT! Thanks!

    I have a question and it's not related to the video but I need some help on it. I play clarinet and now I'm practicing bassoon. I know in high school I'll play bassoon for concert band but I'm going to miss playing my clarinet. What can I do? I love bassoon but I don't want to stop playing clarinet.

    • @erynoft

      Hi there- No worries! I doubled on bassoon and flute all through high school. It's okay to play more than one instrument. Just keep in mind that it will require more practice time. :)

    How much should you keep a Reed in water ?

    • @erynoft
      @erynoft  8 лет назад

      It depends on how humid your location is, how hard the cane is, and the altitude. In Alabama I like to only soak my reeds for one minute so that it doesn't overly saturate and pop the tip too far open. But when I lived in dry high altitude climates, like Utah, I would soak it for 2 minutes to be sure it wouldn't dry out while playing on it.

    • @erynoft
      @erynoft  8 лет назад +1

      That's ok. The color and finish of the bassoon is part of what creates the tone colors. For me, it was more about tone colors than the look of the bassoon. :)
