  • The video captures "A Dialogue Between Deans: The Intersection of Social Work and The Arts” held on February 1, 2024 in Howard University School of Social Work's Auditorium. Dean Sandra Edmonds Crewe and Howard University Chadwick Boseman College of Fine Arts Dean Phylicia Rashad met to talk about the intersection of Social Work and the Arts.
    The video showcases an empowering discussion among two amazing women who are leaders as Deans at the Howard University main campus and how they interact in other settings. The two Deans discuss how Social Work and the Arts have molded them. The dialogue offers opportunities to listen to their ideas of advocacy in the arts and social work. They explore their understanding of what radical social justice means in their work and what it means to help others along the way. They tell stories about their experiences, and how they have learned across their lifespans, including honing their crafts to influence people. They further reflect on social change they have witnessed, including those that protected and influenced them, and those who helped to make them who they are.
    The two powerful women discuss what the future holds for both disciplines, the Arts, and Social Work.
    Black History Month provides an opportunity to honor the 2024 theme of “African Americans and the Arts”, at the Howard University School of Social Work.
    The esteemed deans of the School of Social Work and the Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts asked each other questions about their thoughts on a range of topics including helping others and demonstrating how the arts influence social work, and how social work and social justice can and do affect the arts.
    Dean Sandra Edmonds Crewe, an influential figure in the field of social work, and Dean Phylicia Rashad, a trailblazer in the arts, engage in a dynamic conversation delving into the many facets and pathways connecting social work and the arts historically, in present times and suggest what may be opportunities for the future. Their discussion highlighted the ways in which these two disciplines intersect and contribute to meaningful social change.
    HU School of Social Work Associate Dean Tracy Whitaker opens and closes the Deans Dialogue over about ninety minutes followed by a range of questions from students, alumni and a number of outside guests. The event offers a unique exploration of how social work, and the arts can collaborate synergistically to address societal challenges and foster positive transformation.
    Both Deans explore their roots, their champions, their willingness to learn across the lifespan, and explore what it means to be encouraged by and to encourage others across their life experiences.
    Dean Phylicia Rashad is Dean of the Chadwick Boseman College of Fine Arts at Howard University. She is an acclaimed award-winning actress with numerous awards including Tony, People's Choice and Drama Desk and BET Honors Awards and many more. She recently completed work in the remake of the Color Purple movie. She is best known for her role as Clair Huxtable on the sitcom The Cosby Show which earned her Emmy Award nominations in 1985 and 1986. Her work in Empire The Good Fight, and This Is Us series show her versality and professionalism as an actress.
    Dean Sandra Edmonds Crewe is dean and professor of social work at Howard University. She has research, scholarship, and public advocacy in the areas of caregiving, aging, ethno-gerontology, welfare reform, and social welfare history. She has numerous publications in these areas. She has served in executive level positions in the field of public and assisted housing and was instrumental in developing self-sufficiency programs as well as health and well-being programs for older persons. Dr. Crewe is a long-standing trustee for the Maryland Affordable Housing Trust. She is co-lead of the network addressing eradicating social isolation, a grand challenge of the American Society of Social Work and Social Welfare.
    Dr. Crewe is a NASW Pioneer.
