Im almost a minute in but spring day was about and accident on april of 2014 it was the sinking of the Sewol ferry The ship had been loaded with twice the legal limit of cargo on its decks, and the ship’s crew had lied about the boat’s total weight there was 304 passengers, the majority of them were highschoolers and on the way to a sight-seeing field trip, they drowned mainly because they had been ordered to stay in their cabins until it was too late. Only 172 passengers survived the wreck. In the mv it was representing different point of views of the survivers some felt guilty fo surviving, some felt trapped because the korean government tried to cover it up and anyone who spoke on it would disappear, and others were longing and missing their friends, Bts making this song was a huge risk and costed their lives but its a memorial song in a way.

Spring Day is hands down the best BTS song to ever been released. Nothing else compares in terms of lyricism and literary references. Only BTS can combine a classic novel and a movie into a story that honors the Sewol Ferry Tragedy. This song is absolutely timeless

Also I want to get into my favorite scene in the music video: the washing machine room
It's so packed full of symbolism relating to the Sewol Fery Tragedy (quick flyby: 200 high school students drowned at sea because the captain and employees were selfish and told everyone to stay inside while they escaped. The S. Korean government tried to cover it up until the president at the time was was impeached.)
      The machines represent the boat
The clothes inside represent the students on the boat.
When the camera tilts, it represents the boat tilting on its side as it was sinking.
When Jin's face is in the reflection if the glass, it represents the students helplessly looking out the porthole windows
On the washing machine, there's a sticker with the phrase "Don't Forget", which is directly taken from a survivor of the tragedy.
The clothes are never taken out of the washing machine, symbolizing death.

When you said at the scene with Jimin that “half of his body is prepared to be there and half is still in the snow”. When relating to the Sewol Ferry tragedy, what you said just struck me because it’s like the victims were ready to die because they felt hopeless in the last moments as the ferry sunk but at the same time they were not supposed to die in such a young and tragic way. Thinking about that incident always makes me tear up

Also, the clothes and especially the shoes that Jimin was holding are supposed to represent the clothes and remains of the school kids on the ferry. Another thing was that the circle windows and laundromat washer windows represent the windows on the ferry. The tilting throughout the video represents the ferry tilting and sinking. They final message they wanted to reveal was that after this incident, they wanted the victims and the survivors to find peace or the “spring day” during such a dark time for the entire country.

This song means so much to the people of South Korea. After the Sewol Ferry tragedy, the government banned all public forums and discussions of the incident. So in their own way, BTS articulated the country’s sorrow and especially the overwhelming grief of the few who survived the accident but who lost friends and family in the sinking of the ferry. I think BTS was the only group that came up with this song and this extraordinary video that contains so many symbols pointing to the tragedy. I think you hit the nail on the head with one of your statements about someone being half in the water and half in the train. I think many of the survivors felt that way. Life is moving on but part of themselves died in the sea. For someone who is reacting to this video with no prior knowledge of the Sewol tragedy, you were extraordinarily perceptive of the feelings being conveyed by this video. Well done!!! P.S. You are one of the best reactors to BTS videos of late. It has been eye opening seeing these videos again through your eyes.

Suga stated that their art is meant to give the listeners whatever they need from it. You must understand how artist have to tread lightly around what they are writing about really as not to offend. This year in Esquire magazine it was confirmed by Jin that the song is about the actual sad event but then they all chime in that it's meant to give ARMY healing and to look forward to better days as it is a running theme in their musical lyrics and music videos.

Thats the key word isn't it. Interpretation. yet it remains a fact that RM says something else differently. We can never know the minds of BTS except for the things that they stated straightforwardly. In plain words. So we should say things like, "this song to me is about..." or "i interpret this as". Now that is taking ownership of our words. I am glad our boys created hundreds of songs that touch as all differently. But I also dont want the meaning or feelings they had when they wrote this song to be lost amongst the fan theories and assumptions. Especially when they already tell us what it meant to them.

Just to share info fr their esquire interview in Nov 2020:
"there is an undeniable allusion, in both the song’s video and its cover concept, to a specific incident in recent South Korean history. “Spring Day” was released just a few years after the sinking of the Sewol ferry, one of the country’s biggest maritime disasters, in which a poorly inspected, overloaded ferry toppled in a sharp right turn. Hundreds of high school students drowned, having obeyed orders to stay in their cabins as the boat was going down. According to some reports, the South Korean government actively tried to silence entertainers who spoke out against it, with the Korean Ministry of Education fully banning the tragedy’s commemorative yellow ribbons in schools. I ask whether it was about a specific sad event, and Jin tells me, “It is about a sad event, as you said, but it is also about longing.”
Not a confirmation still, but they seem to acknowledge it.

The beauty of BTS songs is that they are multi-leveled - they exist on several different levels at once like all great literature and art. Both RM (Namjoon) & Suga (Yoongi) have said that this song is about missing people you cannot see any more. But the Sewol Ferry story is another level. With great art BOTH can be true. Some ARMYs are either-or thinkers who believe that only ONE can be true but the symbolism & metaphor BTS employ in this song open it to being interpreted personally by each listener. It is also important to note that Park Guen Hye was president of SK at this time and that artists were put on a blacklist for openly talking about the Sewol Ferry & other issues. It was incredibly brave of the very young BTS to put this song out with the Sewol Ferry metaphor implied within the lyrics and symbols.
HOWEVER, AGAIN, BTS SANG THIS SONG TO ARMY IN PERFORMANCES OVER & OVER DURING THE PANDEMIC TO LET US KNOW HOW MUCH THEY MISS US SO IT TOOK ON AN ADDED LEVEL OF MEANING.
Thank you for your serious discussions of BTS' work!

Once you understand the depth of this song and music video, it's impossible not to tear up or cry. It's just... so sad, and so important as a song for BTS. It's one of the songs that still to this days charts high in their music platforms. And you can see why. I felt that Life Goes On had the same kind of sense, but it will never match Spring Day. Spring Day remains the Queen of BTS's songs.

His interpretation of black swan and showing all sides of himself and being vulnerable gave me chills and then his interpretation of the tattoo on Vs neck and the blindfolded little girl in O.N. blew my mind as it is something that never even crossed my mind as an OG 2014 ARMY. It's been 6 years since the Sewol Ferry Tragedy.
Spring Day has also been used in many memorial services for the victims of the disaster. The father of one of the victims said in a statement, "Without anyone knowing, BTS quietly visited our kids through their song and video. They showed us their unforgotten hearts. Yae-eun would've liked it a lot, too.”
The victims will always be remembered and cherished. If you aren’t aware, to be informed please continue reading. On April 16th 2014, the MV Sewol Ferry capsized and sank on its route from the mainland to Jeju Island in South Korea. Almost all of the 476 people on board were students from Danwon High School, aged 14-15, as the entire second year class was on an overnight field trip to Jeju. The disaster left 304 dead, 250 of them high school students. The second year class of Danwan High School originally had 325 students, but when the school reopened after the disaster, that class was made up of only 75 students. The yellow ribbon is the symbol of remembrance associated with the Sewol Ferry disaster hence the picture.
"I want everything to be a lie," high school student and survivor Oh Hae-youn said about the disaster. "When I wake up in the morning, I feel like everything feels right. Then I realize it's not. I just wish everything was a lie."
Namjoon - , "As a citizen of this country, I do believe we should feel responsible. We thought we could send our condolences if we could. We donated because we wanted to help.” Namjoon has also said that he wrote the song in one afternoon, after seeing a leaf fall in a park. The boys were allegedly on a sanctioned blacklist due to the President at the time creating it of any artists or celebrities who spoke out against her or her regime or even mentioned the ferry disaster publicly,, however this is too political and i won’t delve too into to it. they were on this blacklist for having privately donated 100 million Korean won to the victims’ families for funeral costs and psychological services. The general public had not known about BTS’s donations until a few of the families chose to publicize it.
The official count of survivors is 171, not 172, because a few days after the disaster, the vice principal of the high school Kang Min-kyu committed sui/cide. He wrote in his sui/cide note:
"Scatter my ashes at the site of the sunken ferry, so that in the afterlife I may become a teacher to my students who have not been rescued."
    thread by @/7explicit
”The sun will rise again. Because no darkness, no season. Can last forever”

The first time I saw this video, I thought "it's a song about someone you love passing away or being in a very dangerous harmful situation". The video starts with someone in the snow putting his head in the railway, which immediately makes you think about suicide or contemplating death in some way or form. Trains have always symbolized travel in literature, including "going to the afterlife". The boys look happy in the scenes displaying memories of their friendship, but sad and nostalgic in all the other scenes. Jimin's face when he's holding those shoes... Gosh, it's heartbreaking. So, I thought "someone passing away" was the most natural interpretation of the video.
PS: To be fair, before listening to Spring Day, I knew that french mountain of clothes art piece and also what shoes in a tree symbolize, maybe that's what made the connotations more obvious for me...

To me, art is something that happens between the piece of art and the beholder. Yes, you find references to loss, maybe sacrifice of humans (Omelas, Snowpiercer). This knowledge, and now also your comments on frames and perspectives add even more layers, which to me enriches the experience. I love how the song is referred to as "The Queen" or just with a crown emoji, and I think "Spring Day" in itself already illustrates loss and longing, which is a common human experience, and therefore appeals to so many. All hail the Queen.

Oh my god when you talked about that scene w Jin in the washing machine and talking about the mountains representing freedom... ughhhh 😭😭😭 that hit so much harder because apparently the washing machine view is meant to represent the portholes of the ferry ship and someone being stuck inside so the mountains probably meant them wanting freedom and to reach land 😭 I never thought about that...

In the laundry room scene, when you talked about how the mountains symbolize freedom and the shot inside the washing machine allude to hopelessness, it really struck me. There’s a theory that the scene was supposed to look like from a perspective of someone trapped in the ferry, looking through a porthole. They could see the rescuers, their freedom, but they still couldn’t get out.

I think you should react to spring day mv explained, the symbolism is really powerful in relation to what’s it’s based on. There is a comment that already explained the tragedy about in 2014, but this song is so meaningful in Korea that it never left the charts since it was out. Every year since itis played like crazy on the Memorial Day.
It was a really risky move on their part because artists were being blacklisted by the government if they talked about the events of the ferry. BTS though it was worth it because of what it meant for them and the people of SK, they refused to ignore the victims, the innocent lives taken away like the government wanted.

they can add SO MANY layers to one single song that just one interpretation isn't enough most of the time
to me, spring day IS a love/break-up song but not the conventional love song in a romantic sense. it's love for your friends, your people... that's why i love bts, they highlight all types of love in their songs, it makes me feel and relate the most. platonic love and loss of friends is something almost everyone can relate to, it's why this song is so potent. and the way they used this chance to reference the sewol ferry accident adds even more layers and respect for them for me...
yeah i love bts a normal amount.

So this song is about missing someone specially to one who already left this world.

As you may already know, this song is not about break ups but a tribute to a tragic event. Those mountain of clothes signifies the clothes of those who passed. They will not be able to wear them. And same with the last scene. Shoes tied together and hanging from power lines or tree branches signify that someone has died. The shoes belong to the dead person. The reason they are hanging, is that when the dead person's spirit returns, it will walk high above the ground, closer to heaven. Which for me, watching the part makes me emotional.

They confirmed that Spring day was generally about loss but the MV was at least in part a secret message about the Sewol Ferry Tragedy that took the lives of 304 ppl including 250 South Korean children on a class trip. The ship slowly sank over the course of hours as the children were told to remain in place & ultimately drowned huddled together in their rooms as the crew and adults safely left the ship.
