My experience as a Montessori teacher is different than the one Dr. Brooker presents in regards to divergent vs. convergent education. After the children grasp the concrete ideas of a specific work, we encourage them to look at it from as many different angles as the want. As long as the children are respecting the work, the environment and each other they are given this freedom. I certainly have never discouraged a child from exploring new ways of learning or getting their work done,
Dr. Liz Brooker could not be more mistaken about Montessori's relevance for the 21st century; about the extent to which children interact socially in a Montessori classroom, and the value Montessori placed in social interaction.
Overall I loved the video. I did find interesting at 18:23 there are studies and research that shows young children don't have to look at adults in the eyes inorder to prove they are learning "successfully" or understanding
Amazing video, thank you for this!
Dr. Booker is wrong in her critique. Montessori is far superior in teaching students to think in new ways. I went to Ruffing Montessori 1-8 and Dr. Booker's understanding of the system goes against my actual experience. We did tons of group research and book discussions.
Sorry BRooker. Anyway, Liz, if you are reading this stop by Ruffing Middle School, you will be amazed.
Simple wooden toys are best to let children role play and use their imagination! I'm the mum of a toddler and I was inspired by her to make and sell classic wooden toys to encourage open-ended play - www.etsy.com/ca/shop/LittleForestKids. Montessori toys, puzzles, wooden blocks, peg dolls, toddler gifts, kid's toys, painted wooden dolls, rainbow dolls.
It's so sad that that school with the red uniforms isn't Montessori anymore. Screw the interactive white board.
Maria Montessori did not "abandon her son to be raised by relatives." The child's father and family hid the child to protect THE FATHER'S reputation. Dr. Montessori never gave up on getting her son back. She gave her position at the university (as proof that she was trustworthy) in exchange for being allowed to see her son. She visited often and invited him to stay with her as soon as he was old enough to decide for himself. See: Montessori - A Heartbreaking Betrayal by Gardner
If you are referring to Dr Liz Brooker I disagree. She makes a many valid points. Montessori has to be realigned with 21st century practice Gorton Mount is a good example of how this has happened. The state will not switch to Montessori. They have their own set of directives. We should be working with them to offer Montessori as a complimentary element to what they are already doing. The clip of all the children sitting on the floor watching another child rolling a mat stuck dread into me.
Montessori too great ....
1) Can you mention how it is not realigned with 21st Century Practice?
2) Which state? Many states do have public Montessori schools.
3) What set of directives are you thinking of? Hard to reply to general statements.
Good video. The unfortunate thing is the lady talking about the differences, while well-intentioned, honestly had no clue about Montessori.
New friend here thankz
OK folks, it's all good stuff, BUT...
Note Isaacs' concluding statement from 26:00 and the adjectives she uses.
Championing current dominant values?
It seems that Liz Brooker unfortunately does not see the social interaction that results from, for example, providing only one material per classroom. The children have to negotiate, learn patience and feel awe and happiness for the work of other children. These qualities are the way to a peaceful society. It also seems that she regards the "material" as mere learning material, not as a means of self-construction of the personality that ultimately constitutes the social totality of humanity. Oh, well.

Montessori is okay for preschool, kindergarten, and 1st through 3rd grade. But after that it's a fucking mess. I hated most of my time there. It may be different in other Montessori schools, but the one that I went to was terrible, and hardly prepared me for High School, or anything that I need to know in life. The majority of my preparation, knowledge, and "maturity", came from the internet on sick days. They shove the fucking "method" down you're throat, and treat 8th graders like 3 year olds.
So sad that Dr.Brooker obviously has no understanding of the Montessori system. Almost everything she says contradicts Dr. Montessori's pedagogy. Teacher's TV should have done more thorough research in order to find a convincing critic.
Taking the elitist globalist approach is not what Montessori intended.
Does Dr. Liz Brooker know what Montessori is about? At 24.26 she is completely opposite of the truth. The 'divergent' vs 'convergent' learning is the other way around...Montessori encourages divergent education, standardized education looks for 'convergent' learning. Frustrating that she presents this opinion -probably teaches her students, too....maybe she needs to meet Dr. Steven Hughes!?
Google him -he's an expert in brain development, and a huge advocate for Montessori!
Ugh! Brooker actually makes me shudder! For my mind she clearly needs to learn what convergent and divergent actually mean in an holistic and educative context (not just a small sample of one part of an activity). I guess that just shows her lack of understanding about Montessori though. Perhaps she should refer to Sir Ken Robinson for some enlightenment? Robinson is a huge advocate of the individualized Montessori approach which inspires divergent thinking and creativity and he advocates for it around the world when speaking about 21st Century Education. Caveat: I am a "mainstream" teacher :)
Fuck! i am at 5.30 at the timeline of this video, and start to suspect that they are not able to tell enything about the METHOD.
Its just a woman that is exremely proud that the method was made by a woman, and is what this fucking video is all about.
I start to get bored to death now, but it is my hope that if i watch even more they might start to talk about the fucking method it self soon and not about this woman all the time....
