- After losing the 2013 NBA Finals in crushing fashion to the Miami Heat, the San Antonio Spurs went on a season-long revenge tour of beautiful basketball, led by their veteran trio of Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili. But those Spurs also rostered an ascendant Kawhi Leonard, who would win Finals MVP in 2014, and a deep bench that got huge contributions from its many international players en route to a ring. In this episode of Why They Won, Kirk Goldsberry explores the stats that made this team so exceptional.

This is what you call a basketball team
Nah 2011 Mavs and 2004 pistons
@@switchlite44 both those teams are great underdog story, but the 2014 Spurs simply just play a beautiful brand of basketball offensively and also have enough pieces defensively.

I think Diaw's two-way versatility deserved a lot of credit as well.

Miami heat played this way and knocked off top teams this year.. Butler kept the ball moving and let guys like robinson, struss, vincent, caleb to score

Literally a worse version of gsw
@@darryelphillip5219 They were a much more complete team than GSW they relied a lot on shooting and smart passing but they could punish you in the midrange with Parker and Kawhi and in the paint too with Duncan. The pain of 2013 made 2014 so much sweeter. Any Spurs fan who went through 0.4, Manu Foul, etc knows the emotions. 213 everything was looking good for the Spurs. Parker's last minute shot over LeBron, Neal and Green barrage, etc. Then R.A. hits that 3. I still can't watch last minutes of 2013 game 6 in all honesty. Hehe 2014 was sweet I mentioned it was good enough to last me a decade. And now we got Wemby. Happy times!
2014 has an added bonus: disbanded the heatles.
After watching them demolish the Heat for 3 consecutive Finals game, I immediately watched Allen's heroics. The joy that was brought by that '14 chip was so overwhelming.
@@jdayyy8003 good for you. i couldn't but boy i was glad we got that 14. phew.
The refs won a ring for the Heat in 2013... Everyone knows the Spurs should've won game 6.
@@userunknown1578 I'm a spurs fan, but I can't say that. The spurs had all the opportunities in the world to win that game 6. Look at all the missed free throws, and as I was watching the game, I remember seeing Pop take Duncan out the last play, while the Heat kept Bosh in, and I started screaming at the tv, knowing Pop should have kept Duncan in for rebounding, since Bosh stayed in. They make 1 more of those missed free throws, or Pop leaves Duncan in, they win the game. I could understand taking Duncan out if Bosh had came out, but there was nobody to rebound. Bad coaching decision. The Spurs had more than enough chances to win. They can blame no one but themselves. But I have never seen a more resilient team...to come back and win the next year after such a heartbreaking loss, was incredible. But everyone knows they should have had the Heat 2 yrs in a row

As a Brazilian, I was cheering so much for the Spurs. Couldn't be happier about Splitter getting his ring, especially after that all-time block by LeBron on him last year. I was awake until late at night to catch the games, good times 😅

Was waiting for him to say “The Beautiful Game”
I loved them dominating this series and beating Miami!! Was sick of them
And breaking the heatles in the end.
This Spurs team was fun to watch. They may have been old and over the hill, but they played smart team basketball. They absolutely spanked Lebrons super team
Patty Mills has always been an underrated role player
They played the most beautiful basketball
Turned danny green from a dancing clown into a champion! Gotta love that
Lol, FYI -- before Green was an NBA champ, he was UNC's winningest player of ALL TIME...2nd place is Sam Perkins who played with Jordan and Worthy

If the NBA got back to this style of basketball across ALL teams the games would be a lot more competitive and fun to watch.
Most teams just play dumb, bad basketball and no defense
Most successful teams play this version of basketball.
Ahh this was the sweetest revenge ever, after that 2012-2013 finals loss.

Bulls never faced a team with the chemistry like the spurs. The ball movement from the spurs was insane.
That's why it sucks that the bulls didn't stay together for the 99 season. Spurs & Bulls would've been a crazy series
@@dkmrap1 yeah the 99 spurs wasn’t as good as 2014. Danny green was breaking 3 point records that postseason. Duncan, Parker, gino all hof players. Parker was a finals mvp. Than add young Kawhi

@@nydibs they were unstoppable when adding the best rebounder If all time and former champ Rodman I give you that and still nothing like the spurs and no defensive star like Duncan and Kawhi. Duncan has most defensive teams.
this is how actually basketball should be played not that bs dribbling the ball between the legs for 10 seconds straight, or isos, etc.
my favorite team of all time
looking back, Spurs was actually have an amazing squad, they have the best PF in history, Parker & Ginobilli, The Claw & Green (which won another ring with Raptors and Green with Lakers), even the big 3 have a decent back up with Diaw, Mills, and Belineli.
This is how a team is built. Each player is lethal from a different part of the floor and a GOAT coach who can exploit that. Loading a team with 3 of the same type of players allows easy defensive rotations (looking at the Nets lol)
I mean, the Spurs of old were great, but I do feel like this video went out of its way to ignore Kawhi as much as possible. I mean, the guy won the FMVP and DPOY in 15 and 16.
I feel like the least they could have done is highlight his defense on Lebron in the finals, his catch and shoot 3PT, and his finals performance.
Yeah, the team was really balanced and well-oiled, but it really pretended like Kawhi didn't do much until he left the Spurs on the very year he won FMVP.
I still remember that posessed look on Duncan's face that emerged in the WCF. He kept that same "high elert" face all the way to the championship. That was his "Mamba Face". Dude was NOT going to loose to Miami again.
this team was sooo good it made lebron leave miami
spurs passed the ball too much lebron got dizzy and run back to the team that drafted him.
The Beautiful Game 🥹
Boris Diaw should've got the Finals MVP instead of Cry Leonard.
Bobo was the difference maker.
My first time seeing the Spurs winning a championship.
The fact they replayed the same team that beat them the year before because they made a few dumb mistakes. It was sweet. They fixed their mistakes, played much better and kawhi was hungry to redeem knowing he missed a free-throw that could have sealed the deal. It was like a fairy tale about redemption
This 2014 championship team lead to several teams adapting the same playstyle and proved successful, Kerr especially.
Blueprint of the Warriors offense. Popovich hates the 3 but he is the one who started it.
Yup Kerr was hired right after and they took off
Dude, no dedicated montage of Manu or Boris? No Kawhi defensive highlight reel?
it’s the only team that could keep its each roster’s play time under 30 minutes per regular season game. there are personal stats that are impossible to break but here’s the team stat that can be talked the same
DEAR LeSPN
This is the type of BASKETBALL content that I like.
A real solid team, if ray Allen never made that crazy shot in 13 they would’ve won back 2 back
It was crazy to see the Spurs totally dismantle the Heat. I really didn't see that coming.
All of a sudden, ESPN made a video about the Spurs 😂😂😂
you don't need big 3 or super team. you just need a team that knows how to make each others better. nuggets 2023 champion proved it again
"We cared about one stat: wins and losses." - 11x NBA Champion William Felton "Bill" Russell
The thing to remember about that era was: Manu always said the right thing, Tony said (and did the wrong thing) and Tim hardly said anything.
One thing missed was that this teams style was referred to as “The Beautiful Game”.
They had something called the claw 😁
Back when KD got jealous of Kawhi and called him a system player which was true at that time, but KD was petty for that comment.
Loved seeing them Destroy the Heat in the finals
Can someone tell me the name of the instrumental at the start of this video?
I couldn’t tell you, I even Shazam’ed it and I didn’t get a result
Crazy that the Warriors can thank the Spurs for the beautiful game that led to 4 titles and the Raptors can thank them for building Kawhi into a superstar until he became a premadonna.
Spurs ball movement
The best NBA basketball I've ever seen before the boredom of whatever this is in the present when people just like to throw threes, do kangaroo step backs, and a defense that's represented by Draymond.
Calling them “one of the most iconic championship teams of the 2010s” is a joke 😂 I’d take them to make a competitive 7 game series against any championship team ever.
The 8 seed mavericks took them to 7 in the first round, stop it
@@paulloy8728 they dismantled the heatles by a record margin and sent lebron packing. That 8 seed had one of the best players of all time and an 8 seed just made the finals. Some teams figure it out later in the season. You stop it.
@@coachtimmeh6826 the 2014 spurs are one of the greatest teams ever but in fairness lebron missed a game (which is significant because it was only a 5 game series) and wades knee injury led to hm having one of the worst playoff series from a star player ever.
@tridra5714 - still not as bad as Lebrons performance vs Dallas in the Finals. That may be the worst performance ever

This is what used to make golden state so great
God bless you, Tim Duncan 😊
This is how Naismith envisioned his game to be played.
"Chalkful with future HOF"?? Idk about that. Four for sure.
They should probably disclose that Kirk worked as a VP for the Spurs in 2016.
It’s not Official till we hear Barkley scream: GINOBILI!!!!!
I believe they forgot to mention 1 key component.
I mean, you don't get to name a Trio and proceed to showcase only 2 of the players.
Wait Duncan was 38 when this happened? That's insane. The closest we got to that is lebron taking the Lakers to the semi finals also at 38. Pretty sick.
The way he play he can still play until he's 50. When he retired he is still a top 3 defensive big in the league
why nobody include this team when talking the greatest of team all time?
it may not be flashy but this is the defination of a team almost like the superstars are like role players not scoring bunch but a balanced effort on offense and defense.
the '13-14 Spurs was Popovich's ring.
Love my Spurs❤
Small nitpick: for years after 2009, just say "twenty " and the year. All the "two thousand and " starts to add up after a while when you have to say the years alot. Just say "twenty fourteen". We're not in the aughts anymore :)
They beat okc with prime kd, russ, ibaka, reggei jackson in wcf. beat miami with Lebron, dwade, and bosh in finals 😮😮😮
Tim-manu-tony is up there with the nba's best trio of all time. Tony is the most underrated pg ever and manu as well on his position. Tony aint even on top 75 and he's still greater than dame at this point imo. Dame' body of work is still ongoing and he has to do more to eclipse so many snubs like dwight, tony, pau, king, tmac, vince, bosh, english...ect
Lets be honest,,, the Spurs big 3 were awesome, but no one talks about they're the role players. Who rarely made any mistakes
After 2000s, 2hen you throw the four sign, it's over.
What about Anderw Gaze ?
And he didn't even mention Ginobli like that
How do you not talk about Boris Diaw and Manu Ginobili?
Cause this dude don’t know ball
For me the sweetest are the GSW in 2022 since the fcking analyst keep on mentioning that they will not going to win a champ after the injuries while the SAS we don't dout SAS to win a champ
Im a new basketball fan (as of 2018), but Tim Duncan was one Ray Allen miss away from being 6-0 in the NBA finals. That isn't nearly talked about enough considering Jordan's 6-0 is considered this great feat. Duncan isn't even in a lot of people's top 10 all time. Why is that?
Duncan is regularly in the top 10. He gets disrespected bc he was perceived as “boring” and stayed out of the spotlight
Too many “fans” are just blinded by the hype machine. It’s why some actually think Lebron is the goat
It's because of the LeBron effect. People lied about LeBron being the GOAT or at least being an obvious #2. So Magic, Bird, Kareem, Duncan, etc. all began being treated like scrubs to make Lebron look better.
Wait! The red mamba is Brian Scalabrani!!! No Matt Bohmer
Where's Boris Diaw?
