      Great Video. In North America we don't use GVM. Vehicles are sold with GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Recommendation) which is usually 6-9% below the axle-sum, and fines are only levied on over weight, axle weight; not the sticker GVWR. My truck has an axle-sum of 4140 kg (1730 front and 2410 rear) and a dry weight of 2050 kg and a GVWR of only 2910 kg based on the factory P-rated 4 ply tires it is sold on. This is 30% (1230 kg) below my axle sum.
      If you replace the tires, with a tire that has a lower rating your axle rating goes down. The opposite can be true but may not be, depending on the actual axles max rating. My F-150 has a lot of reserve axle capacity. I actually don't know of a shorter off road capable passenger vehicle (122" wheel base) that can carry more by actual mass or by percentage of dry weight anywhere on earth.

    Hi Robert. I’ve been following your RUclips videos for a little while now - well ever since I started my research into purchasing an eventual 4WD family touring vehicle for the past couple of years.
    I have decided on putting my hard earned shekels towards a new Prado and planning on getting a pre-rego GVM upgrade ... so your video was right up my alley. I will purchase the new vehicle in one state then relocate to another state a couple of years afterwards (work commitments) and hence, a pre-rego upgrade is clearly the go. The axle upgrade issue was news to me so I will definitely ask the question of the guys that will do the upgrade (Dobinsons suspensions) about it and go from there.
    Thanks for demystifying the ‘dark art’ of GVM upgrades. Between yourself and John Cadogan (Auto Expert) and one or two other RUclipsrs, I am going into the whole 4WD purchase/tourer setup with my eyes wide open so many thanks 🤙

    Watched to understand upgrade options. Didn't realise Axle Sum was a thing, everyone talks about GVM. I'm 50kg over my rear axle limit, otherwise within all other limits, so Axle Sum will fix the problem and avoid the cost of a GVM upgrade (approx. $6,700 for a 2020 Ford Everest). Another option is to get a smaller van (dear) :)

    Good video Robert, thanks. One point to raise is that most post-rego GVM upgrades ( I know Pedders and Lovell for sure) are Federally accredited, so they are transferable between States and do NOT require to be recertified by a second engineering certificate if moving from one State to another. I confirmed this with NSW Transport recently as I am a Victorian looking to move to NSW and didnt want to pay the $1000 twice if I decided to upgrade in Vic before moving to NSW.

    • @triDave99
      @triDave99 2 года назад +2

      Just posting to retract my statement about the transfer of certification between States.
      After further research I have had it confirmed that NSW will not stand over an engineer report from another State. So a GVM performed in Victoria WILL need to be re-certified in another State. Apologies for the confusion.

    The Landcruiser Sahara with a full tank actually weighs 2900kg add the 350kg ball weight 3250kg you have only 100kg so in my case that makes it the limit. The new 300 series at 10 to $15000 on top of the 200 series then add $6000 for a gvm your looking at around $12500 to $165000 and you still haven't matched an American truck in stock trim which is above the Cruiser.
    All these companies do not give you much to play with especially at the high end.

    • @L2SFBC
      @L2SFBC  3 года назад

      Yes, that's one reason I suggest people avoid top specs like the Sahara. The American trucks tow very well but sadly lack for payload. I have a 300 Series review which includes a weights section.

      @@L2SFBC Yes if you want to go that far but even an F150 or Silverado 1500 run rings around the Landcruiser for sheer towing and GVM limits. These are the latest versions I am referring to the earlier ones have a lower GVM. As for the interior the Yanks have that sorted in spades as well.

    Thank you Robert for the many videos etc that I have viewed. I was led to your calculator and I have questions about the towing legality of a 2015 Colorado 7 (which I have used since new to tow a Traveller Caravan over 40,000 kms).
    Entering details for 1) Colorado 7 with just the driver as payload 2) a much lighter caravan than mine (1500kg) into your calculator flags a rear axle overload of 42kg @ 60% weight on axle. By changing it to 58% it just becomes acceptable. Surely the Colorado 7 is not limited to 1500 kg as my van is much heavier. I am happy to email the document I created from your calculator, so that you can highlight where I am making an data entry error. Much appreciated.

    • @L2SFBC
      @L2SFBC  2 года назад

      The rear axle load is a function of the TBM, not the total trailer weight. The Colorado can tow much more than 1500kg, but you may find the rear axle load is exceeded early.

    • @maxreywob4976
      @maxreywob4976 2 года назад

      @@L2SFBC Thanks Robert. I do understand the TBM etc...but cannot establish at what tow weight the Colorado becomes excessive in the manufacturers' rear axle weight (the example I gave above is what concerns me). My father bought a 2022 Ranger in the US. Curb weight with no driver or anything else except fluids is stated at 2,000kg/4,400 pounds. Is the Australian or other international versions that much different, or do you use a different unladen weight? Even then, I think this one is rated GVM/GVWR of 6,050 pounds or about 2750kg. Just curious as to differences in stock vehicles for different markets, or how the US/Canada and other countries come to these numbers.
    These modern SUV's and even light duty trucks (utes) are insanely heavy compared to back in the day. My 88 F150 club cab is about ~4,800 pounds with me in it, my light duty 86 F250 is about 5,100 pounds with me driving. I suppose modern safety adds weight, and again crew cabs and SUV's weigh a lot more because of those extras. Or are those SUV's heavier duty over there because of the 4x4 market?

Two question though, does a gvm upgrade for a lc200 really require a lift, and why, is a lift required for the outback. I’ve driven a lc200 with a 2 inch lift and didn’t like the experience. Thanks a lot!

    What cop's ever going to know if you're 5 over GVM or 500 over? So long as you're not on a heavy license you'll never be weighed.
    Good vid but all I want to know is what I need to modify to physically beef up my machine and I'll go do it myself and get an engineer's tick, I could honestly care less if I am a ton over my legal GVM so long as the machine is capable of bearing that weight. There's a lot heavier and poorer maintained gear on the road than any ute could ever hope to be.

    • @L2SFBC

      Plenty of cops will know because vehicles are frequently weighed - mostly caravan towers, but also people that tow cars. I haven't yet seen any evidence of weighing individual 4X4s. Also, if you crash and are found to be overweight, good luck on insurance.
