You saved me a ton of time and frustration. I unscrewed the back and pushed them back down and it started working again. I think my daughter dropped it, and you saved me from buying a new drill. Cheers from Arizona, USA.
Thanks bro. Im just now learning that this is probably the most common culprit.. and this is the ONLY video on the internet with straight forward advice..
A good suggestion for replacement tools for you to buy might be a set of JIS screwdrivers, (Japanese Industry Standard) not sure if they are used on drills and such like. Japanese motorcycles certainly use the JIS standard. They are different to Philips screwdrivers at the tip, makes getting stubborn screws out where using a Philips driver has the tip slipping out of the screw head. (cam action) for years I struggled using Philips screwdrivers on Japanese motorcycles, bought a set of JIS screwdrivers and have not looked back. Stripping Japanese carbs is so much easier since using the proper tools for the job. Great video by the way, thanks for upload, about to order some brushes for my brothers Makita drill. Thanks, Vinny.
Good clear helping people video. Replacing worn out carbon brushes is how I fixed a washing machine for £20 of new brushes cos someone else on RUclips told me . Any electric motor not working after years of use? Unplug and have a look.
Nothing wrong with the tool. It is normal to replace brushes when the wear out. Next time, buy a brushless drill. It is a little more expensive, but it is worth.
I snatch all the drills my shop has thrown away Usally from being out of warrantee and I fix em for cheap and keep them. Got a nice Makita collection going on. But make no mistake we punish our makitas in the shop and they outlast every other brand we had in the past.
I have had No issues with my Makita's. I have seen some Bosch go through some hell. all day 13mm drill through 20mm plate. still living. It makes me cringe how much hurt I see them get put through, but they keep living.
Just cured a drill for a friend by banging the side of the back of the main body where the brushes are (not the handle) with my hand (could try a rubber mallet). The hit jolted the brushes till they made contact and the drill ran. Since the drill was relatively unused, the brushes were probably stuck after months of non-use. Would shooting a bit of silicone in there be a good idea? So next time, just bang the drill a little bit instead of trying to shake it to gain contact.
Can you give me an idea,my wireless Makita drill when I'm using it ,it stops working once I press the trigger and all of a sudden starts working one I press it again it repeats over and over again only when I'm pressing the button please advise thanks
Hello, I have a Makita 481 screwdriver. After I press it works and everything is fine but the 3 red stripes of the battery on the screwdriver do not go out ! They stay on
Thank you! Came here because I tried using my drill to mix some mortar, and it started to smoke. It still runs but seams to have weakened in its power and smells when I turn it on. Doesn't seem to smoke, but haven't tried running it too much either. It's almost brand new. Should I still check the brushes?
There is no harm checking your brushes, however they normally wear out over time and not because of high load. Without looking at it I would assume you have heated up the insulation on the coils to much and have a partial short on your windings
@@Finntheweekendwarrior thank you very much for your response. Do you have any suggestions on what I should do or not do? I am afraid of just using it as if nothing occurred. Cheers!
My cordless drill charges up fine but only works for about 2 seconds before stopping. Then a few seconds later I can start it up again but it stops after a couple of seconds over and over. Any idea what the problem could be?
You are amazing. Rename the video "an amazing secret to changing Makita drill brushes".... Something like that. Idea. I almost didn't make it thru the video to "the secret"
I think you are looking for the brush holder? I’ll link a site below that has most things but you can also search for “DHP458 Brush holder” for more places www.powertoolspares.com/makita/dhp458.m/dhp458/spares
Hi There. I have a hand drill: 2007 Makita 6270D, 12volt. Battery PA12 does not store energy at all. I need a new battery replacement. Can anybody helps me? Best appreciated.
got an issue with my DHP481 the light isn't working the cable was pinched and I fixed it, now it has continuity and the LED's themselves work too I'm getting power at the connector, but as soon as I plug the light in they just don't work and there's no power there's no short(checked for that) any clue what might cause this? maybe something else is wrong with the light and I can just replace that?
MOG! You are surrounded by drill/drivers... Why not actually use one to undo all the screws? It'd take you about 8 seconds?!! Doesn't bode well for the rest of the video!
Even with carpal tunnel bearing down on me I still use hand tools most of the time. I find it helps my mind with troubleshooting. I fix, and have fixed just about everything. I don't use them unless I have to typically with small plastic stuff like this it can strip out almost everything I find, unless you baby it to death.
"Car manufacturers are assholes" is why I am mad at Ford for engineering nightmares. Broken leaf spring, eye/shackle bolts must be destroyed for removal, and special size cost $70 for 4 bolts and nuts.

The brushes are universal if you know the size you can put any in if their a little bigger a fine grit sand paper you can sand them down
Thank you man, this was the exact problem with favorite Makita Drill, awesome!!!!

Yeah it’s a small bit of knowledge that can save a couple bucks
Thanks so much! I took all the screws out too 😂 brushes was the issue for me.
Why the hell hasnt this channel blown up yet? Most under rated channel on youtube in my eyes
Watched your video. Very helpful. Maybe just say something at the beginning about not taking out every screw... With love from Canada
If I take anything apart. I always takes photos, so I know what side coloured cables or parts go back together
I prefer the torque screws. The screwdriver tends to hold firm in the screws
The world needs more honest guys who can fix stuff without trying to charge you a week's wages.

Hey I need the back bushing for my drill
Takes the power tool screws off with a screwdriver with the desk littered with power tools but then puts the tool back together with a power tool lol.

My makita stopped working and battery gets hot when I put new the battery on. Any idea what is the reason for this.
Somethings shorting out and pulling load (hence the hot batt). I would pull it apart and see if something looks cooked.
Hi. I have a Makita electric drill. I need it to do different variations of speed, but it only does fast speed. What can be the problem
Peter Cookson sane here
I've fixed so many drills. Like 90 percent has been faulty wire soldering.
how about overheating brushless drills?

You should use a drill to undo all those screws. 🤭
Drill bit doesn't fit down in the plastic housing will ruin the plastic
