I just made 14 quarts of this last night and since close to half home with my caregiver because I am teaching her how to cook American food and finding things that she really loves. She really loves the soup and so does her four year old so home run and she's pregnant so it's very good for her health! I love this soup. My stock pot is 16 quarts and it's not as tall as it is wide. I still need help to cook because I can't see up in the pot and I made some white hot chocolate the other night and got milk all over the burner! It's now a microwave procedure! LOL I take 30 oz of the cooked beans and whiz them up with my hand blender and add them to the soup and that's just as much body as I want it's very nice it takes it from a clear broth to and not clear broth.
I also have a 16 quart stock pot. When cooking soup I try and fill it to the max. Most of the soup goes in the freezer. Sometimes I don't have to cook for weeks on end.
The difference between this soup and Senate Navy Bean Soup is the size of the chop of the Vegetables. I use a Ham steak finely diced, 4 carrots (1 shredded) 3 halved quartered and small diced, 3 stalks Celery (halved and split long way then finely diced) 1 base ball size sweet onion finely diced. 3 Cans of Navy beans or Northern beans or Cannellini beans or white beans and can juice or any mixture of the three and 4 gold potatoes (2 shredded) 2 small diced. I also use a heaping Tbsp of Orrington Farms Broth Base Ham flavoring mixed into the vegetables. I start the Ham and onion first then add the rest of the ingredients and the ham base and cook for 10 minutes. I add 6 to 10 cups tap water (depending on how this the soup is). Bring the water and mix to a boil for 10 minutes then reduce heat to a medium simmer. Cover and simmer for 3 hours.
I was lucky to have some fresh thyme in the refrigerator last night. We put in about half the container and then pulled out the stems. It really made a nice nice difference in the soup I didn't need to add much at all besides garlic it didn't even need salt because of the ham hocks. It's just an all-around Good soup for the winter. It is -9° where I live right now! It was the same last week so give me something hot to eat. :-)
Okay. Loved the video. I'm making navy bean soup with a ham bone purchased from the Honey Baked Ham Store. I'm going to adjust my recipe to yours and see what happens. Thank you!
Carrots take longer to cook than potatoes. I can't imagine this a navy bean on Northern Bean and ham cream soup. It's sort of turns my stomach but since I've never tried it I really can't comment. You may not want me around as I am a serial commenter. I'm home alone in the evening and night time so I want you too and talk to the TV incessantly. When the cat is awake I'll talk to him. LOL
Hi! Here's a tip for thicker bean & ham soup: Take some extra cooked beans (approx. 1/2 C or a little more to your satisfaction), mash them and add them right in, simmering uncovered for the rest of the time until nice and rich. It saves the additional time and step to make a butter/flour roux. *Or* you can mash up some of the cooked potatoes, too! That always works in a pinch. :)
I have used instant mashed potato flakes in a pinch. Actually it's the only reason I keep any around. edit: I was beaten to the punch by 3 years by John King.
This is great, I went to the store this morning and got everything to make this soup. I'm in Pittsburgh too, it'll be great for the Steelers vs the Giants tomorrow. Cheers!
I used dry Great Northern beans and I can't imagine putting milk in! Gak! I used for ham hocks and got quite a bit of meat and they turned sweet when they cooked in the soup for quite a while. I have enough dried beans legumes and pulses for the zombie apocalypse! :-)
I think in my soup with beans it works really nicely and you don't have to bother making a roux. You can make a big jar of roux and stuck it in your refrigerator. It will last almost indefinitely and that way you can just put a spoonful or two in what you want to thicken.
Well you forgot to put in the kitchen sink...glad you like your ham/bean/vegetable rou soup....I like just ham and beans - celery - onion...myself...lots quicker ....with corn bread...
Carrots celery and onions is a mirepoix which is the base for many many soups stews and sauces. Of course it is French and I lived in France for a short time and I hated it!
🤣🤣🤣💕 Oh I just love it I’m glad you told that canned soup off looks like a great recipe I’m definitely gonna do that I’m going to make it thanks a lot🤣💕💕💕
Wow! The soup looks amazing! I'm trying to mirror what you're doing however I'm really allergic to milk. I'm going to try the rue without milk just ham stock and bacon fat instead. Great ideas in this recipe. Thank you.
+stupadasso1964 Glad you like the video. You don't need milk with the rue but I do add cream to the soup. Have you ever tried Lactaid milk products? Are you allergic to dairy or the lactose in milk?
+Charlie Moore Thanks for your response back. I would say to the lactose since other dairy products like yogurt, cheese, butter, etc has no effect. Maybe your suggestion to try Lactaid milk would be helpful however I'm hesitant since my past experiences with milk has been disastrous. Maybe I should give it a try to see. Thanks again for your response.
Looks good I myself smoke my ham in my electric smoker using hickory wood chips it gives it a very hearty smoke flavor that even the kids like it and my kids don’t like beans and of course the flavor is like nothing from a can lol Gal 2:20
hahahaha! I am guessing your wife was on clean up duty since you used about every bowl and kettle in the kitchen. You must be having company over to make such a big batch. I have a huge ham left over from Easter, so going to give your recipe a try. Thank you!
Charlie Moore Okay, sure. Thank you very much for your wonderful presentation! I enjoy beans; my favorite kind are small white beans, or navy beans. And I really enjoy the ham in it too! Again thank you kindly.
I don't consume milk ,I usually use a cream of celery or cream of mushroom soup to chicken it instead of milk. You can also throw a half cup of instant potatoes to chicken it also. Don't use flour directly into the pot of soup, it ruins the texture.
I have never heard of adding milk into ham and bean soup, or a rue. The potatoes and beans should be enough to thicken the soup. You need to write the recipe out instead of having followers follow the video, you were a little confusing since you doubled the recipe.
Hmmm ... sorry to hear you were a little disappointed by the soup. However, that is the great thing about soup ... you can make little adjustments to get it just the way you like it!!

This is the best ham soup I've seen!
I've got a 91/2 lb. smoked shank ham in the fridge. Ham, Beans, and vegetables in a 6 Qt. pot. Yummy ! Good stuff.
That is a big pot of soup ... enjoy!
I'm a soup nut during the winter. Homemade is definitely better than canned..!
Campbell's Soup is mmm mmm 🤮

Hmmm ... that is interesting!
You could also just pour in a cup of instant mash potatos for a fast thickener.

I made this soup yesterday and it was tremendous, we all loved it!

I’m a soup junkie. Loved your video.

I never t thought about adding potatoes to my beans. I’ll have to give that a try next time.

Glad you liked the video. Merry Christmas!!
Homemade beef stew next week and homemade macaroni and cheese freezer meal and one for my caregivers little boy. :-)
How come you used canned beans? I always soak dried beans for the best results.
It was how my grandmother used to do it years ago. It is just what is familiar to me.
I always have bacon grease. I take after my dear grandmother May her soul rest in peace! :-)

+stupadasso1964 Just to let you know. I used to have severe lactose problems but Lactaid products worked great for me. Give it a try.
Good Job Charlie. My Mom used to make that for 8 of us growing up in Ohio
It was my grandma that used to make it all the time. Thank you for watching me videos!

+anne david ha ha ha, I wish my wife was on clean up duty but I clean up my own video production messes. I make a lot so I can freeze half.
+anne david ha ha I wish but I clean up my own messes. And I make a large pot and freeze half. Hope you enjoy the recipe.
May I ask what kind of beans that you used? And those are canned, right?
White Beans or sometimes called Great Northern Beans ... canned.
Charlie Moore Okay, sure. Thank you very much for your wonderful presentation! I enjoy beans; my favorite kind are small white beans, or navy beans. And I really enjoy the ham in it too! Again thank you kindly.
You can really substitute any kind of bean you like. Thank you for the kind comments!!
Charlie Moore You certainly are very welcome.
On my way to the store to buy some beans. Guess what's for supper at my place tonight:)
👩🏻🍳🤣👍🏼
anybody else see SpongeBob in the banana spots?
We have a plastic Tupperware pitcher like yours! It is probably 45 years old.
Why not dried beans?
That’s a lot more ham than I used
My name was margo moore

I did list the ingredients in the video description ... always meant to in the past. Thank you for reminding me to do it!!
How did the past nine years treat you?
:)
somewhat disappointing, had the consistency and taste of Cambells with more ham, next time it will be minus the rue.
Hmmm ... sorry to hear you were a little disappointed by the soup. However, that is the great thing about soup ... you can make little adjustments to get it just the way you like it!!
You sillyyy...
Cut the potatoes
Milk has no room in bean soup. It ruins the flavor and consistency .

take this video down and remake one the right way...good grief
