You can still main shulk, but someone like cloud or Ike can let you learn spacing under more feasible conditions. Shulk is balanced around his Monado arts, so without them he's just a bad swordie. Unfortunately, you simply can't autopilot him in any way. Having a "fundies" character to practice with can help you master Shulk's basic techs like spacing and approach, thus freeing you to concentrate on how to use his more advanced kit.

Yoo! Good Luck on your training! Something I did when I first started is I played against the character I was using in Computer matches to see how they play the character, then slowly increasing the level of the computer as I got better and better to learn my character more

As shulk sometimes just randomly mashing aerials in the opponents general direction will work and especially works with the speed monado art
