It's fact
I understand what Mark is talking about but the corporatism is also what's killing wrestling in my opinion.
Yep agree
Never said better.
@@TheKidFromYTown "healthy dose of wokeism"
**cough cough** AEW
It’s not Mark, but Taker
@@heywoodjablome2767 Could you elaborate on that?
Nice to see Mark Henry and Teddy Long reunite ever since they teamed up together and feuded with each other decades ago.
While I totally understand what Mark is sharing here, I believe Taker was talking about how old school wrestlers worked under tougher conditions, worked injured, didn’t go online and get their pantries in a bunch over a fan calling them a derogatory name. They had thicker skin.
Yeah. People like to pick your words apart. Not get the entirety of what you are trying to say. People think Taker is advocating to go back to the wild west.
My parents used to say that they walked to school for miles barefoot through summer and winter. Now obviously they weren't advocating for us to do the same thing, they were advocating for us to toughen up. Now some people who don't like what you are will say "well, are you saying we shouldn't ride in transportation and walk barefoot to school?" taking your words out of context, just as they do with Undertaker.
They had to have thicker skin because it grew calloused from all the hard drugs.
.............No, @@theheavy2742.
The two go hand in hand. Those guys were arguably tougher.
Because they tolerated or were forced to tolerate a bad, dangerous, and shitty working environment.
That bullshit about going online and complaining?
If the internet had existed back then, you can bet your ass there would have been guys complaining and lying. They all just did it in person and got away with more.
Taker's an amazing preformer. Perhaps the best wrestler ever. But any guy that's friends with JBL, a dude that sexually assaulted other wrestlers as a form of hazing, is probably an asshole. At least passively. He didn't do that shit. But he was the leader of the locker room in a time when that, and numerous other horrible and illegal shit, was just considered an okay thing to do. And complaining about guys for protecting their own welfare in a corporate and digital age by calling them soft....it doesn't sit right.
And if it's about the brass ring and standing up to Vince- we know that's bullshit too. Guys like Austin would be fired today and then there would be media rounds about how difficult he was to work with.
I think the thicker skin comment is also unfair to today’s talents. I mean if everyone one today was allowed to go crazy on roids and drugs like their biggest. Maybe it’d make recovery a lot easier. Not to mention, the only person who’s gotten soft is Vince McMahon, considering he’ll fire anybody that tries to pave their own way and make everybody walk on eggshells
The wrestlers from the older eras had way more charisma in my opinion. I can't even watch the wrestling of today.
Would you even call todays junk wrestling? I head you!
Probably caused they were all on drugs and roids lol . Socia Media killed the bizz nowadays... and PG era
this explains why i gave up on wrestling back in '99.
@@6sixxtea936 Don't be fooled, they are still on drugs. Nobody with half a brain goes into a Combat sport without taking SOMETHING to help them with recovery time.
Wrestler's of today are more responsible than back in day but because of Pg era we feel it is boring it not today's wrestlers fault
Mark Henry is well spoken. He did well in WWE but during his prime he could have been a bigger name. The pink jacket promo is one of the greatest promos to this day. His thoughts about the stock made me think of $GME
Salmon pink 😅
They were also better wrestlers, bigger personalities, wrestled way more often, had much better ratings, and sold way more tickets than most wrestlers today. Stars usually come with baggage.
Yep the college kids are a snore fest
Thats why alot of them died at early ages.
@@HSMike2 Yeah, there's no denying that. The current era wrestlers will live longer, and that's good, but that still doesn't make them more entertaining or increase ratings. WrestleMania was pretty terrible imo. The only reason I'm not cancelling my subscription is because of the old content from 20+ years ago. They need to upload a lot more of it, too. There's a big gap where there's the WCW PPVs pre-Nitro but a lot of WCW TV from, say, Hogan's debut to Nitro's debut where we're missing stuff. Just one example. And don't get me started on the music... especially with the ECW content. Vince is too cheap to pay for the music rights and that part kills me. No RVD theme, no Dreamer theme, no Mike Awesome theme, not even Sandman's theme...are you friggin kidding me? Half of Sandman's appeal was his entrance with "Enter Sandman" playing. Vince can't even respect these guys enough to give them their old themes in the footage he bought. Anyhow, I'll shut up for now.
Not better wrestlers, today's wrestlers got better moves and style, only problem is how they're marketed, boring scripts and not having creative control. Also that most people list interest when figuring out is fake. The same limited people get title runs and it's more predictable when 1 guy is calling the shots
And more entertaining, WWF is completely different than WWE and I like WWE, I watch it but the Attitude Era was my childhood and it was very fun!
That was absolutely not even close to what the Undertaker meant.
Your right. He implied their soy boys
@@chm9935 that's what taker meant
@Austin Edwards No, not being a believable fighter makes you a soy boy, taking time off because you got a bloody nose makes you a soy boy, not wrestling because you have a cold makes you a soy boy, being overly sensitive (look in the mirror) makes you a soy boy, complaining about working 4 days a week while making a million dollars makes you a soy boy, having your feelings hurt because someone said something you don’t like makes you a soy boy, not respecting those of the past who made it possible for you to be a millionaire when they weren’t makes you a soy boy, looking more like a fan instead of a wrestler makes you a soy boy, not being able to take a joke or criticism makes you a soy boy,and not standing up for yourself, your family, your fellow wrestlers and the business MAKES YOU A SOY BOY. But you already knew this because you ARE a soy boy.

I agree.
It ain't today's wrestlers fault the Pg era made them soft plus today's wrestlers are more responsible than back in the day
Undertaker is telling the truth 100%
Yep
Taker wasn't lying though
Tell that to GCW wrestler LMAO. It’s the new generation of WWE that are soft.
@Austin Edwards True, but you have to admit, they worked very hard to be the most popular wrestlers that they are now. Looking at these new wrestlers, I barely know any of them who's interesting
@Austin Edwards True, I have to add that they're holding some wrestlers gimmicks. Which they're not allowing them to be themselves like aew are
@Austin Edwards no they are actually soft today, you have 3 men getting around in pink unicorn outfits ffs lol
The product is soft. The wrestlers aren’t. Just because they want to play video games in the back instead of stabbing each other doesn’t make them soft. It makes them smart. Vince has made the product soft. Not the wrestlers. These guys are hard as hell.
Henry gave the diplomatic answer, he knows what Taker really means when he says that, and he’s right.
No he is not it was harder for them because Vince made it that way and triple h is proving now guys don't have to end friendships to make it in the business
I could be wrong but I always interpreted what Taker said to being the case that today's wrestlers are about flips and stuff whereas the older generation actually had psychology and told stories etc
to be fair, look at how they built up the storyline for Roman REigns and Cody Rhodes this past year
it seems like the problem wasn't today's wrestlers. seems like the problem was fucking Vince McMahon being so fucking deranged and out of touch with the world since 1995 lol
Hmm.. I'd have to say that Harley Race & Rick Rude were tougher than the Miz and Corey Graves.. (There are lots of tough wrestlers today but there are a lot of 157lb gymnasts too.)
Facts there are wrestlers today who are tough and/or outspoken and now can't speak their mind but the "woke" wrestlers can.
@@KoolKumasi I hate how Flair puts them over in all of his podcasts. "They're better athletes than I ever was. They have so much more talent and the spots they pull off really goes to show you how far we've come in this business"
REALLY Ric!??!
@@bigdaddy2343
Maybe that's why I never listened to his podcast, but that is his opinion
Mark Henry is not completely correct on that, thirty years ago there were athletes with college degrees in pro wrestling. He has forgotten that there were college athletes who graduated and were unable to either get into The NFL or if they did get in were unable to maintain staying there. Some of them made the switch from pro football over to pro wrestling when they fizzled out of The NFL. But that's okay because wrestling benefited from The WWF, The NWA, The UWF, The AWA, WCCW, Windy City Wrestling, etc. accepting them. As far as I'm concern it was a win win for us fans.
I’m 50/50 on what he said
Teddy killed me 😂😂😂
"She said you didn't leave the money" 😂😂😭😭
It's just like today's hip hop artist soft compared to the '90s undertaker wasn't lying
I think Mark Henry is reading a bit too deeply into Taker's comment. It sounded more like Taker was saying that today's product is more like Circque de Soleil as opposed to a simulated fight. Guys like Buzz Sawyer, Dick Slater, and Stan Hansen for example as opposed to the flip, flop and fly guys who are great athletes but don't project an aura of legit toughness.
Its like HBK's critique of RVD. RVD is to flashy, so his big moves doesn't carry any weight anymore. For me HBK's moonsault was much more special than RVD's whole repertoire since its more rare. Taker's suicide dive at mania was also something special to watch.
@@joseph906 lmao RVD was one of the most entertaining guy ever, HBK dont know shit.
The truth is RVD was 10x times better than HBK athletically and Shawn had to minimize him. End of story. In a real fighf RVD would kill Michaels
@@jugg9140 eh, watching rvd as a kid he was okay. He was always flipping around so Shawn was right about it not being special. If it was special to you, great. But high spots matter less when you do them all the time.

I never expected him to say that. I'm impressed with his eloquence.
Mark Henry a very knowledgeable person
This has happened nationwide over the last 20 years, not just the wrestling business.
At this one job I worked at all the supervisors who slowly rose through the ranks over the years were being replaced with kids who have degrees who never worked a day in the field, in the trenches. All the roughneck blue collar bosses with HS diplomas named Johnny Joey Bobby Mikey were replaced with Eli, Noah, Tucker and Brent bc they had a business degree.
The locker room used to have penthouse and playboy spreads hanging up on the walls. Cigarette butts on the floors. Guys would drink beers in the company parking lot on Fridays in the summer after work. If you do ANY of that now you're done. Fired. There were no drug policies. They had a "hiring dept" which was really workers who were relegated to the office bc their bodies were shot. Not anymore. Now they have a Human Resources and a place to complain with no retaliation or anything. It SUCKS. I liked the good ol days there.
Right before I left I got into it with this dude Alex. He was like " man you really miss all those uneducated cave men good ol boys? Cos I just described 95% of the workers and office." I said yeah they were tougher and funnier than the guys they're hiring today.
" all those guys were racists including the biggest bully of them all. Paul "the Wall" Reinhardt. He was your mentor right ? Now I know you liked the old times I can just imagine what kind of conversations yous two had"
Big Paul should have been a wrestler. 6'8 350lbs rock solid, hands like catchers mitts. He was just a tough SOB and said whatever was on his mind.

I think the Undertaker's point is that today's wrestlers could have not have gone through what previous era's went through. I have to strongly disagree with Mark Henry's statement that 30 years ago nobody had degrees in wrestling. If you listened to Jim Ross's commentary, especially in Mid-South and WCW- he would constantly put over wrestlers college/pro athletic backgrounds and degrees.
Wrestling hasnt been good for 20 years. So i havent watched it in 20 years. The interviews of retired wrestlers is way better than the actual shows nowadays.
When I watched wrestling I never cared who had a degree in philosophy or business administration because I was watching wrestling! I also didn't give a fuck about who was out doing pills and coke the night before the show, it does not matter because the end product was great! These idiots in the corporate mindset are more worried about being sued and keeping the stock price up instead of the product they put out!
when did people start caring about all this superficial bullshit? must've been after i stopped watching.
James Beard is my fav ref.
The title: "Today's wrestlers are soft".

They couldn’t write “P H D” lmao that took me out at the end haha
Mark Henry, D-Lo Brown, to maybe a lesser extent Jim Cornette just to name a few in recent years I've heard them speak much more advocating for the side of social justice and sterilization of the wrestling industry rather than the unhinged masculine grittyness that it got famous for. So yeah, no shock to hear Mark Henry shilling for corporate politically correct wrestling.
It's sad, a lot of the older guys (not all) but a lot are caving to this. Wrestling is now PC, Cucked & Sterilized. In the typical SJW way but also in others. Like when it comes to wrestling PC/Social Justice, anyone (especially people in the business) who criticizes the modern generation of wrestlers is essentially a "racist" in this community. It's almost like blasphemy if you say the older Gen of Wrestlers & the Ruthless Aggression/Attitude Era/Golden Era were better than AEW & WWE/NXT.
I think they are soft. The Royal Rumble showed me wrestlers gently putting wrestlers over the top rope and not throwing them
really?! i haven't watched one since the late '90s, so i'm wayyyy out of touch!
Which royal rumble was that? Was it this years? I haven’t watched a full one in years because they just don’t excite as they used to

@@smarksruinedwrestling5020i will tell u ur problem u never really liked wrestling u just liked one era even if they bought back stone cold or so u just grew out of it so dont talk like ur an expert fan
Back then, Kayfabe was still a thing and wrestlers had to protect the business when they were out in public, usually in bars lol. Nowadays, they openly show it's not real and the talent mostly play video games instead of going to bars and strip clubs.
While there is nothing wrong with video games(I myself enjoy playing video games as a hobby), I do find it absolutely cringe how these Millennial aged pro wrestlers we have today mix their video game hobbies with their wrestling gimmicks and make poor attempts at trying to attract the "gamers" among the wrestling audiences.
Undertaker's comment in a nutshell
--most guys are just comfortable with the spot they are in. Not much of a fight backstage to take the risk in saying no to creative. Or to "show them" when given something pretty dumb but goes out there and makes it work and seeing how much they are giving it their all to make something believable.
A great example is a young Cody. No matter what was given to him, what gimmick or storyline he had to do, you could tell that Cody put his heart and soul in it to just simply make it work as best as it could and most times he would succeed in making it better than what vince and co thought he could and it felt at times they were a but disappointed he'd get it over enough. I mean with Stardust you couldnt tell that Cody hated that gimmick. You couldnt tell that he was getting fed up. Because he wanted to keep proving he deserves to climb the ladder to bigger and better things and he was always going to do what he knew woukd prove that. When it came to the point of realizing that WWE decided they just werent going to budge on him, he knew he had to prove it to them in a different way and that was by leaving and making a name for himself without them. And by god he succeeded cuz now he is exactly where he ways bieved he deserved to be given a chance to be at.
The wrestling business and more importantly the success of the wrestling business wasn’t built on corporatism. Nor was it ever intended to. What made the wrestling business so addictive and unique was the, lack of a better term, “circus side show” appeal. Nothing is fascinating about college graduates that hold phd’s taking bumps. But juiced up high school drop outs that have alcohol/drug addiction problems and real life backstage heat IS very very fascinating. We knew they were playing characters but most of the characters were inspired by their real personalities.
It is a circus back then
First of all I grew up on wrestling since the mid 1970's. I watched wrestling all the way through to the late 90's early 2000's after Vince bought out everything. I did watch some of TNA/Impact for a bit until I couldn't take anymore of Dixie Carter. To me Wrestling was dead. The good old days of real raw bone in your face tough guy bloody action was over. All of a sudden wrestling changed into something I just couldn't recognize anymore. All but a handful of real men who I loved watching raise hell and beat the shit out of each other for my entertainment were gone. We were left with a bunch of soy boy wanna bees who tried acting tough but couldn't and were more girly than anything else. The storylines we're stupid and it was like watching one of your mom's soap operas. Stupid and non entertaining. God I miss the good old days of wrestling were real men knew how to entertain the crowd with their tough as nails personalities and no nonsense in your face violence. Even though it was fake they knew how to make it look real.
i gave up on wrestling back in '99. (mid attitude era) because it was turning into jerry springer on steroids. last week, i rewatched wcw road wild '99 & that affirmed it for me. especially the theatrics between buff bagwell & ernest miller. this may be great acting on miller's part but he really looked dead set pissed off in that pre match rant.
@@jpbart1390 I tried my best to hang on thinking things would change for the better and new wrestlers would come in or they would start doing storylines that were really edgy and gripping but it never happened. It just kept getting cornier and stupid as time went on and I just gave up completely. It just wasn't worth watching or paying attention to anymore. Fans were telling them on a daily basis what they wanted and they didn't listen. Wrestling gave up on the fans and put them on the back burner. Blows my mind.
@@Vulcan5911 sounds like you're on my wavelength thinking how shitty it has gotten. looks like wrestling's gone back to a niche like it was back when it was still territorial & it'll never be as big as it was back in the '80s-'90s. but at least we can watch old matches & reminisce about the good ol' days on this site.

I think that is more WWE fault than the wrestlers fault. Wrestling has deteriorated because the creative process of the company has been seriously limited to satisfy external parties and that doesnt allow wrestlers to show their full potential.
This creates a working culture in which wrestlers are just satisfied by achieving less and doing the same over and over as long as they get paid enough money.

The solution to this IMO is to recruit collegiate wrestlers cos they would be disciplined, legit, intense and educated.
I think it comes down to this...
When I see 2 men fighting, I want to believe they are trying to kill each other
I want to believe they are so far gone into the darkness of your soul they don't care about consequences.

I respect mark Henry very successful in his career hall of famer
King Kong Bundy said this years ago in a shoot interview, he actually stated guys like Rey mysterio and Chris Jericho wouldn't of made back then, he said wrestling was more about physical appearence and fans in that day wouldn't believe Mysterio could beat someone the size of someone like Bobby Lashley because it was more believable back in is era and you were selling more of a real fight that was before all the stuff came out about pro Wrestling..Mark Henry right now you got wrestlers that went to medical school, Law School, phd degrees so yea era has changed a lot.
Roman Reigns took serious offense to undertaker's this particular comment.
And said in a nutshell that, somebody who says things like these wants to deliberately say they are kind of 'gangsta'..
Roman actually mentioned some logical facts..
But still, I will go with undertaker. Because, seriously the locker room conditions and everything back then must have been very different from now.
And to perform well in that era, is really commendable
Undertaker is right nothing is like the attitude Era
If these kids graduated college why are they wrestling? Back then wrestlers who saw that as one of the only ways they can make decent money went ahead and dedicated their lives to it
@Austin Edwards Then they need to stop complaining about all the stuff that was the norm back in the day if they are earning that kind of money then and stop playing their video games and actually work out some more or they can leave and to put that college degree to use basically got themselves into debt for no reason even if they move into other fields most of their money would have been made here. What was the point of a back-up if you're not going to use it...these people are better off away from wrestling and let those who don't have as many options make their way, not dumb marks with a decent upbringing and college education paid for who played Smackdown vs Raw video games 10 years ago who suddenly decided they wanted to become a wrestler...The Undertaker was right, these kids are soft
The lighting is so strong

Not going to lie, the wrestlers definitely did get smaller over time. The only ones that still muscled are the ones who are from The attitude era, or early 2000s...Randy Orton, and Rock and a couple more but not many. lol. These new guys are small, but I understand because of the new wellness policy. They want to keep the wrestlers living longer. Also they did cut the blood out for a while, which is good because they literally had to blade for real. Eddie Guerrero could have died the first time, when he bladed too deep. Soo I mean it's not that the wrestlers are wimps, it's just that the WWE has made it safer ! So yeah that's nothing wrong with that
