Andy, I stumbled on your videos last month when teaching my students about Hawai'i. I'm a Special Education teacher in El Paso, Texas and i love watching the Daily Pidgin now!! I'm not from the islands, but i've always been so interested in the culture over there! Much respect! I watch them during my break to relax and also learn some pidgin! My kids love to listen too! Mahalo Andy!
been living in Japan for almost 5 years now & dis is so da kine for my kauai girl soul. we goin move back oahu in 3 days and my poor kids (ages 12, 7 & 5) stay clueless cuz we stay slackin on da pidgin. deeze segments are their "homeschool" edumacation prep fo go home. mahalo plenty for da crack laughs. i gotta ony watch 1 at a time cuz i no like OD den no body goin know what i saying ovah hea. aaaaaloha!
When I first started at Kaimuki High School in small kid time, I asked "What bus do I take to get home?" Answer: "Da Bus" "Yeah, but WHAT bus?" "Da kine bus" "Yeah, but WHAT bus?" "Da kine ORANGE bus" LOL
Good da kine explanation...da kine replaces the obvious object/action in sentences between two people who are familiar with eachother and the circumstances.
Had that "Da Kine" conversation/lesson with my parents when visiting relatives in Hawaii. My little brother spilled his drink on the floor my aunty told us kids & cousins to go get Da Kine. Before she finished saying Da Kine my cousin automatically gave her towels to clean the spill. My mom laughed saying I looked totally clueless what my aunt said and that Da Kine was obviously meant the towel to clean up the spilled drink.
Hey gang! As of 2/4/24, Andy comes on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 3pm HST - 5pm PST - 8pm EST. Join the fun by searching Andy Bumatai or Daily Pidgin on RUclips! COME AND ENJOY THE ALOHA VIBES!!
This is the best explanation of it. The thing about "da kine" is there needs to be a shared history between the two people having a discussion, otherwise "da kine" needs to be clarified. Or sometimes it's a filler for when you can't immediately find the word for something on your mind. The other day I was coming back to Los Angeles from Hawaii and I had to go through a TSA check and I was talking the the agent about something I'd forgotten before I went to Honolulu and said to the agent, "Oh I don't know brah...I think I left it in da kine...ummm...you know....back up da mainland in Pasadena."
This is such an awesome channel! So Spanish is my second language, and da kine makes me think of "esa vaina" or for a person, "fulano", and there's still more it's used for it sounds like. Every language needs & has words like this. ❤
Here's a classic one at our house: hubby and I leaving da room at night. I go tellum, "Eh, please da kine da da kine" and he closes da light. Shaka, yeah?
Dat was one mean video at da end wit unko wit dea wea u steh??but calling da house fone...I do Dat to pepo...I jus so into wateva I like do at dere house....I tell dem wat bu u steh home??n dey tell me Lolo or wat??cuz I gotta remembah wat fone I call...gud stuff...Mahalo unko...
Lol surreal bc I gotta da kine to explain up hea in Houston. Brought back memories of childhood n home. Also watch Andy growing up, good ol’ dayz..We Original Hayn💯🤙🏽🙌🏽😎Aloha
Just learned about this phrase and it sounds so useful and I'm annoyed that we don't have an equivalent in English. I might try to teach it to the people I talk to honestly
I've watched this video more times than I care to admit. We just named our new pet bearded dragon Da Kine because we couldn't think of any other name so started calling her Da Kine, and well... it stuck. Heading to Hawaii next year! Make more videos! My family and I love them!
Maybe explain it that "DA KINE" is like a noun.....where "DA KINE" could be describing a person, place, or thing. And that it is like a common sense conversation between 2 people who can talk and understand each other's thoughts.
Bruddah Andy, aloha. Could you consider a video to explain the Eddie Would Go bumper stickers and TShirts.. I sort of know the story, but not full da kine. Lol. Mahalo. 🤘🏼
Hi Andy, U da Bess !!! I going live longer, cuz u make me laugh so much :) Question: I wanted to view all your videos in order, to make sure i don't miss any of them. But when i stay on youtube, da ohdah stay all kapakahi. I dunno how fo view um in ohdah. u know how? u can help me please? but if no can put um in ohdah, its alright. i still going watch um. da reruns is still supah funny ! i tell all my friends about your videos, and everyone LOVES IT ! Keep going, no stop, the world needs more Aloha.
+bobbie awana Sorry about that. My suggestion would be to go to RUclips.com/ToolnAroundHI and click on "Show More" and then "Next 100" and start from the bottom. Again, sorry eh.
Andy mahalo for all you do for us to make folks understand da kine Pidgin English we grew up with. I was fortunate as a kid on the Big Island of Hawaii to have my Uncle Kent Bowman (aka Senator K.K. Kaumanua) help me to tell the various children's stories which later in life I used in speeches with Toastmasters International. It is wonderful to see you carry on the tradition to the next higher level.
I stay in Indiana now, brah....I wen' marry one Haole girl from da mainland; she no like 'Da Kine', say she don't get it an' please stop....but I gotta stay listen to HER midwest Haole-Hoosier (da fu*k is a HOO-ZEE-EAR, I dunno) blah-blah talking bubbles kine stuff. I miss da aina of Hawaii...this is one foreign planet, and none of da buggahs can drive, braddah....they take right turns at 2mi/hr, as if they think one big cow is in da road just ahead; meanwhile, da Maz I drive is gonna rocket up an' over that slow Haole, because I stay doing da speed limit of 40....now I can see why da Indy 500 is all about LEF' TURNS, lol.....
"went" (past tense: travelled to, went). It can be a question....(Yu when go?) (Who when go?) "Did you go?" Or a statement....(He when go). (She when go). (Already when go.) (Da airplane when go.) (I when go...) "Went". He/She went,. I went. "I went to..." (I when go to da movies last weekend).
Oh my gosh, it can also mean, when used, followed with the word 'like' (In direct translation) "It happened as though...." = "Da kine when go like...." Or, "...When go like...." 🤦!
.."da kine" da kine proof na kanaka da kine "mind readers", yeah? Nānā, pay attention, or no communitalkin' no moa, 'cause took da wrong bus fo da baby lū'au. Never get dea..
Mean Andy. Da kine can mean anything. Das why pidgin English is awesome cuz, you say it anyway you like, spell anyway you like, and one word can be use in one conversation. Keep up the good work, mahaloz.
A movie where they kept using this term.. a bunch of teens and i can't remember it. Teens Hawaiian locals , one kid is a pot head and gets his girlfriend pregnant.. idk but my son and I thought it was actually called Dakine.. we laughed alot over how much they threw it in a sentence. Maybe the movie got lost in the Mandela effect 🤔 😁.. i could not find it and looked so long.
I hate to be vulgar, but I think "fuck" works similarly to this as well. At it's base level it means to have sex, but it's also used to express joy, anger, confusion, surprise so on and so forth until you get a sentence like, "these fucking fucks just fucked the fuckers." and unless you hear the tones and have some context surrounding the sentence it's tough to know if this is a good or bad thing... but you also know exactly what's going on at the same time.
Aloha Bruddah Andy from Eureka, CA.....I was kinda thinking that the phrase 'Da Kine' was a way of communicating an idea of what you know without having to find the right words to describe what you know.....I know it hurts my head now that I'm thinking about it.....But to tell you the truth all us kids KNEW what we were talking about back then.......Quick Question......have you ever cringed at reading the Pidgin Language as you actually read it?....I did because it always seemed like I was trying too hard to communitalk with it.......
+Lee Pittman Mahalo, and, yes, concerning the cringe factor. I'm working with someone now to try and put together a standard Pidgin spelling system. Not easy. We'll see how it goes.
Dude, i'm a black Fourteen year old kid who's been interested in Hawaii, it's culture and the people along with language for YEARS, i still probably don't even know 1% of it, but this explanation got me to understand it immediately even though i only watched it once. The drawback with the word is that you'd have to guess, so wouldn't it be easier to say something like "They're waiting for him" "Who is waiting for him" "Da kine at school" meaning his friend?
No the idea is that the person saying da kine is saying it to someone who knows or understands through context exactly what ds kinw is a reference to. Mexican American call it slang for shit. Imma go get the shit, i know you want some shit. Nah i dont want that shit, get me the new shit. Aight.
This is THE best explanation of how we use "dakine" as we communatalk.
Andy, I stumbled on your videos last month when teaching my students about Hawai'i. I'm a Special Education teacher in El Paso, Texas and i love watching the Daily Pidgin now!! +Alfred Pilialoha Well put. Mean da explanation.

I describe Da Kine as " A filler word describing the obvious "
This is the best explanation of it. The thing about "da kine" is there needs to be a shared history between the two people having a discussion, otherwise "da kine" needs to be clarified. That's the best explanation of "da kine" I ever heard. Spot on. People always say it means "whatchamacallit" but that's misleading.
+Austin Casey Mahalo Austin and thanks for watching and spreading da work.
I live in Hawai'i ( still a newcomer) and definitely trying to grasp this. Mahalo nui loa for the explanation
Thank you. Very informative.
had fun watching this !! thanks Brah !!

this is hilarious and I don't know if there are any other Portuguese in this channel but think of coiso, coisa and coisar. it's a match! XD
Here's a classic one at our house: hubby and I leaving da room at night. I go tellum, "Eh, please da kine da da kine" and he closes da light. Shaka, yeah?

(past tense: travelled to, went).
It can be a question....(Yu when go?)
(Who when go?)
"Did you go?"
Or a statement....(He when go).
(She when go). (Already when go.)
(Da airplane when go.) (I when go...)
"Went".
He/She went,. I went.
"I went to..."
(I when go to da movies last weekend).
