majima changing from being riku into being the master of masters between 0 and this game is the funniest damn thing. he was my favorite part of 0, and he is my favorite part of this game but TOTALLY different and opposite reasons. I just can't help but like the guy
I'm legitimately thrilled that y'all are invested in this one. I was worried after 0 that you guys might not have gotten invested in the intrigue stuff, but you seem to have latched onto the characters much more, particularly Nishiki. Love it. If anyone's interested, here are some fun notes: -Chase mentions it via dialogue, but I think it bears highlighting: there is a famous bit of Japanese mythology about koi fish. They have to go upstream and I believe even up a waterfall, but if they can do so and cross the gate at the top, they transform into a dragon. This, with Kiryu's dragon tattoo and Nishiki's koi, Kiryu represents power and Nishiki represents ambition. Just very fun. Plus, it really makes it such a cool moment in 0 where they throw off their shirts and fight, side by side, with their outlines-only tattoos on their backs. -I played Kiwami before 0, and when you first come to the Pocket Circuit stadium, Kiryu briefly reminisces about how he used to play here when he was younger. You fade to an old, sepia-tone photograph, expecting to see a young Kiryu, but it's instead several children flanking a very clearly in-his-20s Kiryu screaming a Pocket Circuit battle cry amongst these tiny kids. I literally cried laughing the first time. -Majima Everywhere is the most fun I've had with a video game in a LONG time. When you come across the traffic cone in the overworld, I need to stress that if you stand nearby, you periodically see it move and can hear Majima giggling to himself. Amazing. Also, when you go bowling, you see Kiryu bring the ball up to his face, then slowly put the ball down, close his eyes, slump slightly, and sigh. The camera slooowly pans to the side and you see effing Majima dancing right behind Kiryu. Beautiful. And I'll back up Chase; his lieutenant is CLEARLY so exasperated with all of this. It's such a riot. -I said it in a Y0 video, but the one good thing about starting with 0 is that the relationship between Nishiki and Kiryu is sooo much better fleshed out this way. Chase is right; if you start with Kiwami, you're kind of just TOLD that they're as close as brothers, them almost immediately thrown into bad boy Nishiki and it zaps it of all emotional depth. This is far better. -Additional clarity on Purgatory. It is an abandoned subway section that was started, but never completed. During construction, they hit a hot spring, which led to abandonment before getting snapped up under the table to create this underground Las Vegas-y red light district. So, think less sewer pipes and more underground hot spring resort. Also, the homeless network is very much reminiscent of the setup in John Wick, with an entire underground world in secret, with the homeless having a vast network due to being unseen by the normal world. Also also, the Florist's palace "throne room" definitely has James Bond villain vibes, just for the aesthetic with the stark marble floor/pillars, black walls, and floor-to-ceiling aquarium on the back wall with sharks and tropical fish. When it drops down to the surveillance center, it is absolutely the Dark Knight scene with hundreds of TVs showing every inch of the city. -During the side quest to get a present for the boy, I need to emphasize that getting the porno magazine from the vending machine IS A STEALTH MISSION. THERE ARE TONS OF PEOPLE AROUND AND WILL JUDGE YOU FOR SNEAKING TO THE PORNO VENDING MACHINE. MOST HILARIOUSLY, TWO OF THE PEOPLE THAT CAN CATCH YOU ARE REINA AND DATE, WHO ARE SUPER DISAPPOINTED IN YOU 😂😂 Guys, I had bought this game on a random sale and it sat in my PS library for years before I touched it. And I was ENTHRALLED. Having a great time with this one, fabulous job to our host and enraptured audience of two. Hope y'all are having a blast, cuz we certainly are following your adventure.

I love these videos, I love lore dump, but we HAVE to give Chase a better phrase for winning a fight against someone who's attacked the main character than "he beats them off". As a society, we have to come together and find a different phrase cause I'm too immature and it's everyones problem.

Glad we're already back, this series is great. Also great, in a very ironic way, is how much work Kiwami puts in to sell Nishiki's spiral. Yakuza 1 sure was, uh, written. Here's a fun thing that only comes up in the side stories of various games: zombies aren't canon - but ghosts are! A few are chill, but a later game makes it clear that Kiryu's over-the-top badassery falters in the face of a true supernatural threat.
I'm SO considering hopping on Patreon for the 2nd episode (like a day early at this point) and when kiwami 2 shows up on there I'm taking the plunge. I can listen to these multiple times over, thanks for being this funny guys!

An interesting thing about the opening section with the ring. It was added exclusively to show off the “new” things on PS4 where you can play the game while it’s downloading. It is literally busy work to let the game download. In my opinion that’s why it feels so clunky.

3:50:34 During my playthrough, Haruka was actually WRONG every single time. I assumed the game glitched but it was pretty funny hearing her be all smug about winning me money when I was actually almost running empty.
Around 2:30:00 with the batting cages, in the original Yakuza 1 this is genuinely scary, this psycho kidnapped Haruka and we have no idea what he is going to do to ger, he might just kill her. By Kiwami, knowing who Majima becomes, we expect that, honestly he probably shoved her in the closet and completely forgot about her to focus entirely on his obsession with fighting Kiryu. I think the stage play does it best where he Calls the Florist, asks him to put Kiryu on, demands to fight Kiryu, then gets pissed when Kiryu asks for proof that Haruka is alive. Literally annoyed tha Kiryu us making him work before "will you just come here so I can Bash your brains out, please?"
One thing about the goon in the Majima baseball area fight is that in the original if I remember correctly it was a guy who wore a red jacket that Majima beat up but in the remake they have an updated model of the red jacket guy but he is part of Majima’s men who laugh with a new guy being the one who gets beaten up. Guess he learned his lesson

I don't want to draw too much attention to it, for minor spoiler reasons, but Chase and people who have played more games will note that Monty says something EXTREMELY funny in Chapter 4. I literally had to pause and catch my breath.
Warning: Long unfiltered ADHD nerdy thoughts that are crashing together Batman and Yakuza. I'll say that comparing Kiryuu and Majima to Batman and the Joker respectively is a bit of a superficial take. Kiryuu does have batman's stoicism, but he's shown to be someone who doesn't have the same sort of darker side that Bruce has. I don't want to say Kiryuu is "Simple", because that implies he's a worse character... which isn't the case. Kiryuu is a great character who just-- isn't the same level of bat-shit neurosis (pun 100% intended) that is going on with bruce, even in Bruce's most charitable characterizations. Majima, however, has the classic "three masks" of Batman. There's Brucie the play-boy, the face put on for the public to keep everyone distant from him, Batman the super hero, the one with uncompromising codes he follows which often result in sacrifice (Often at his own expense but lmao hey sometimes others get caught in the crossfire), and Bruce in the cave, the one whom I view as the true Bruce, the guy you see getting harassed by alfred to just FUCKING EAT CHRISTMAS DINNER. Majima has the mad dog mask, the uncompromising codes which come with unspeakable sacrifice, and of course in 0 we got to witness the "Bruce in the cave" whom Majima has attempted to bury. Majima just happens to have a more Insane Chaos Goblin energy to his masks, which reads Joker. I'm not nearly as much of a Joker fan as I am a Bruce Wayne fan, so ofc my opinion is my own! But Joker's characterization is... uh... I think Monty will agree w me when I say it is Fraught With Inconsistency. Not necessarily a bad thing, I think Joker's character benefits when it's really difficult to solidify and pin down what the heck is going on in his clown head. But Majima's actions are actually fairly consistent with the Three Masks characterization of Batman when you get a fuller picture and really examine his (seemingly wild and random) actions. TLDR: Majima's parents are Bruce Wayne and The Joker. They did it, you guys. They had a baby and he's a Japanese mafia man who has one eye :) Selina is v v v angry about this. EDIT: And ofc I just realized... I think Kiryuu is much more like Superman in characterization than Batman. Also uncompromising with his own morals, but the amount of sacrifice he is willing to accept for his morals to be upheld isn't nearly at the same threshold as Batman.

I’m halfway through 5, loved each game in the series so far, and this games has one of my favorite stories. The drama is real

I don't want to draw too much attention to it, for minor spoiler reasons, but Chase and people who have played more games will note that Monty says something EXTREMELY funny in Chapter 4. I literally had to pause and catch my breath.

Warning: Long unfiltered ADHD nerdy thoughts that are crashing together Batman and Yakuza.
I'll say that comparing Kiryuu and Majima to Batman and the Joker respectively is a bit of a superficial take. Kiryuu does have batman's stoicism, but he's shown to be someone who doesn't have the same sort of darker side that Bruce has. I don't want to say Kiryuu is "Simple", because that implies he's a worse character... which isn't the case. Kiryuu is a great character who just-- isn't the same level of bat-shit neurosis (pun 100% intended) that is going on with bruce, even in Bruce's most charitable characterizations.
Majima, however, has the classic "three masks" of Batman. There's Brucie the play-boy, the face put on for the public to keep everyone distant from him, Batman the super hero, the one with uncompromising codes he follows which often result in sacrifice (Often at his own expense but lmao hey sometimes others get caught in the crossfire), and Bruce in the cave, the one whom I view as the true Bruce, the guy you see getting harassed by alfred to just FUCKING EAT CHRISTMAS DINNER. Majima has the mad dog mask, the uncompromising codes which come with unspeakable sacrifice, and of course in 0 we got to witness the "Bruce in the cave" whom Majima has attempted to bury.
Majima just happens to have a more Insane Chaos Goblin energy to his masks, which reads Joker.
I'm not nearly as much of a Joker fan as I am a Bruce Wayne fan, so ofc my opinion is my own! But Joker's characterization is... uh... I think Monty will agree w me when I say it is Fraught With Inconsistency. Not necessarily a bad thing, I think Joker's character benefits when it's really difficult to solidify and pin down what the heck is going on in his clown head. But Majima's actions are actually fairly consistent with the Three Masks characterization of Batman when you get a fuller picture and really examine his (seemingly wild and random) actions.
TLDR: Majima's parents are Bruce Wayne and The Joker. They did it, you guys. They had a baby and he's a Japanese mafia man who has one eye :) Selina is v v v angry about this.
EDIT: And ofc I just realized... I think Kiryuu is much more like Superman in characterization than Batman. Also uncompromising with his own morals, but the amount of sacrifice he is willing to accept for his morals to be upheld isn't nearly at the same threshold as Batman.
