Austin, I may be wrong but don’t all the pre-ceramic triple 0 transition Subs are the Zubmariners you showed previously. The Z looking S I thought was one of the defining characters of the triple 0 apart from the 904L of course.

I didn't know about that aspect of the 168000. But from just a quick Google search, I see that variation you're talking about. (About half of the Triple Zero's I found on Google were Subs and the other half Zubs.) Maybe Rolex was considering that font in preparation for the 16610(?). Interesting stuff!
@@watchsymposium The 168000 came in 2 variations, the "S" version, and what are commonly called the 'Zubmariners'. You're right, about half and half. There's a bit more marketing hype around Zubmariners from one particular dealer in Lithuania - and yes, the papers do indeed say 16800. The true 000s do have a very neat number on the case - and there are some fakes, or ones altered with an extra zero added on which look rather dodgy.
Thanks for weighing in, William. I imagine adding an extra zero wouldn't be all that hard, so making sure that serial number is from the right period would be vital (9,XXX,XXX - R,XXX,XXX). I would have loved to have gotten the shopkeeper to take off the bracelet to have a look, but that's too much tire kicking!
@@watchsymposium Indeed and as far as I know it's the R series that are the Zubs - I'm pretty certain that it really is that cut and dried but then again with Rolex...

I use to wear a fake panerai in my early twenties. a lot of great memories in that watch and suprisingly a very durable watch.

The authenticity of the watches is not a problem buying from the shops at the World Trade Center, it's more about the price they offer which is above the market price because they want to sell to the unexperienced buyers. The local traders have other circuits for buying their watches.

Rolex AD’s in BKK denied me hard today. Went to 3 different stores. I would say being a foreigner has a lot to do with it. Bad experience.

But useless to even start a discussion with them.

Good question, but I didn't have my purchaser's hat on (more the tire-kicker one), so I didn't give it much thought. I was concentrating on trying to get decent footage with my ailing camera, and staying on the right side of the shopkeepers.

I went to bangkok last week. Hoping to obtain a steel sports rolex. With Gods grace i bought one direct from a rolex authorized dealer. They are more hospitable compared to hongkong and japan.
By the way. I also went to central world. I doubt that the stores there sells all original rolex.

Do you suggest to buy rolex from japan or thailand is it significantly cheaper?
I can't speak about Thailand, other than to tell you that I, personally, would only buy through an AD in there.
Japan, however, is probably the best place in the world to buy a Rolex: the Yen is really weak at the moment, the selection is amazing, the culture is honest and the chances of getting a fake are practically nil, and if you're a tourist with a passport in hand you don't have to pay the 10% sales tax. Just my 2 cents.
Perhaps the "prices" in Bangkok are higher than they are in Japan because they want room to negotiate. The actual price may be a lot closer.

Wow so expensive I paid $2000 baht for watches just as good and they have lasted me 10+ years. Some places are such rip offs
Like you I'd be very wary of buying any Rolex in a foreign country even in the West. At least in one's own market it's possible to make a complaint about authenticity that will stick. Once you cross borders I'm not so sure. I'm sure many of the "genuine" Rolex you saw had shady backgrounds.

I'd like to go back! I used to live in Hsin-Chu, just outside of Taipei. I wasn't a watch guy at the time, because this was nearly 20 years ago. I do wonder how the watch shopping is there.
I have to add, the Mangos in Taiwan are some of the best. Mangos and shaved ice was a favorite. And don't even get me started on the lychees...I've never had better lychees than inside Taiwan.

The watch shopping I’ll say… it’s decent but there’re not many concentrated watch shopping spots like Nakano, and not many vintage or neo-vintage selections either.. all in all, I’ll say it’s much better in Japan, especially for a guy like me who loves 5 digit Rolex’s and neo-vintage omegas. I had a absolute blast following your directions and watch shopping in Nakano!

You should pick up a good fake to wear in lieu of the original watch’s you might want to preserve especially if you visit somewhere sketchy.
