Subscribed. I just did my heater core ( bragging rights ) and when I went to start my car this morning, I decided to inspect the car before I left. Found oil leaking from the head and a puddle underneath it and about 70% of other symptoms suggesting a blown head gasket. Looks like a head problem and I'm hoping its not warped as I didn't let it warm up or drove it. This video is going to save me a lot of money. Thanks for making this man. Definitely going to tackle this real soon.

It’s about 4 hours. The manual skips around a bit. The video demonstrates the process in order , tips and the needed tools (especially the special head bolt tool). I recommend downloading the manual, gathering the tools and make a go at it. Bmw makes everything look hard but it’s not bad once you get in it. Good luck.

Seriously without someone showing a video such as this , alot of us would think that we would need speical tools , or with so much on the Internet ,,, that you would have to change this or that.. you made it easy ... one Question, Once I take the cylinder tool and place it on the top to hold it from moving. You had used like vise grips to turn the cam. Was this just used to be able to clean the valves . ????
William Coffman Yes, I used the vice grips to turn the cams for cleaning and repositioning when installing the head. Really, you can do it. I have a desk job, but I like to tinker, It was challenge but I figured I could do it, and I did, so can you. I suggest taking your time, take pictures, label parts as you remove, lay the parts out in an organized manner and you'll be able to put it all back together. I only cleaned the head, no valve job. From what I've heard from bmw mechanics, tolerances are close from the factory, don't do a valve job or shave the head unless it's bad, and in case of a bad head, try to find a good used head. Rebuild heads never run or sound the same.
Maven remove BMW E36 M44 head in 15 minutes and 25 second by RUclips clock. He is a bad man! "Great Video!!" My 2 cents I would check vacuum leeks on the intake before remove. If no vacuum leek I would have take the head out with the intake connected it would save time and intake gasket, overall Great Video!!
+Fadi Matti No, I did not doing anything to the valves or shave the head. I do not advice doing any modification to bmw heads. They never run the same. If you have a cracked head that needs repair your better off finding a good used head.
awesome video what was the sequence you used for removing the head bolts and the tourqe specs for the head bolts as well as the procedure..i can't find that anywhere.

This is done to allow open valves (the head usually get out of time when removed for clean etc.) in the head to clear pistons when re-installing the head. Put the head back on block, install head cam timing tool, then rotate crank and re-install block timing tool. You should only have to rotate the crank a quarter of a turn to position pistons low enough to clear any open valves. Hope this helps. Good look!

Thanks for a really good video. A lot of work! I have a 1.6 M43 that needs the head gasket doing. I think the engine is very similar, but 8 valve, so should be a little easier with a single camshaft - still debating whether I can face this or pay a shop - never thought of the tie wraps for the timing chain - great idea!
Made a hard job look easy. Is it about 4h job normally ? I know the video is less then 15min but its fast forwarded many places. I just want to get a time frame for this. If this took 3-4h for him, then I might allow myself 8h :-) I'm slow and new to this.

Thanks Maven, I didn't use one as mine is m43 so single cam, but I used cable ties like you and put first one at arrow marked on cam gear. Gonna start the car today, rotated the crank a few times and it works all okay.

i have a 318ti and i am doing the head gasket, but i lock the TDC pistons 1 and 4 are up,piston 2 and 3 are down. but in yours all pistons are down?

Hello.. so if you use camlocks and zip tie timing chain to gears , do you have to do timing or will it be close to the same?
Ideally with that method it should be exactly the same.
