  • Internationally acclaimed jazz and classical musician Arturo Sandoval performed Ave Maria at the University of Notre Dame's 171st Commencement Ceremony on May 15, 2016.
Sandoval has received 10 Grammy Awards, six Billboard Awards and an Emmy Award and is a 2013 recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, this nation’s highest civilian honor. Born in Cuba, he started playing the trumpet at age 12 and soon began to follow the music of jazz legend Dizzy Gillespie. His bands in Cuba received critical praise worldwide, and he was the nation’s outstanding instrumentalist from 1982 to 1990. He defected to the United States with his family in 1990 and was granted U.S. citizenship nine years later. He also is a renowned classical musician, and he has recorded and performed with everyone from Gillespie to Frank Sinatra and the Boston Pops to Justin Timberlake. Now an emeritus professor at Florida International University, Sandoval continues to tour and perform and offer clinics and seminars worldwide.

My brother graduated from Notre Dame that year. When I saw Arturo in the program I nearly jumped out of my seat. However, I had to wait something like 2 hours in 40-degree breezy weather before he was announced. People had started to leave because it was so miserable in the stands. My dad and I waited because we wanted to hear him play so bad. When he played, I'll be honest, I nearly cried. Even his mistake sounded beautiful to me. It was completely worth sitting in those horrible stands to hear him play. I don't think I'll ever forget that moment.

Also I do theses types of gigs. Taps, ave maria, anything patriotic. Its kinda annoying. You sit around allot and they ask you to show up super duper early and you almost never get to warm up. you just start cold unfortunately. Sometimes you play in bad conditions, like intense heat and it might be super cold so you gotta fight the weather tool. Besides that you have to play everything by ear usually because sometimes you are kind of not super priority so they kind of ignore you a bit sometimes and you have no idea whats going on. Sometimes I get nervous because I don't know exactly when or how I play but I just track the right people down. Last thing is clothing. Usually you are fine with a suit but sometimes you put on something they have ready for you.
