I was born and raised is whittier, I have lived in other states, but my heart is in Whittier . Although I don't miss the earthquakes, lol, I do miss the beautiful streets of uptown Whittier, my grandmother and I did many window shopping, lunches around there going to the bakery etc. Oh and winchels!!

When I was a kid my mom would always scare me and say “if you’re a bad boy, I’ll take you to the bad boy house” and drive by to scare me. She even made me pack a bag once and said “that’s it, you’re going to the bad boys home.”
Im 35 now and I’m still scared tbh.
Im sad it’s gone. Was a huge piece of history. And my childhood.

As a long time resident of Whittier none of this history was taught to us in school. Thank you for posting this because I never knew any of this history. Today the entire school is gone and in its place will be built more shops and more appartments that will only create more traffic problems that already exsists today. A lot of the shops on greenleaf permanently closed their buisness only to wait for the new buildings to be finished in 2020. Unfortunately that is not going to happen since the workers that are working on the land are working at a snail's pace and if it was finished by next year that would be a miracle.

There are many NEW stories coming out regarding Whittiers original indigenous history which this video does not mention. The reason Quakers were able to settle is because the local native were all eventally pushed to turnbal canyon and massacred for their land , which the Quakers were "promised " from the Spanish and various other Christian groups who were literally fighting over the land. The information is out there and finally coming to light. God bless us all.

Hey Marley G. Love to hear the real story of the indigenous people of the south west. I'm in Downey, so I've been traveling to Whittier for a while, and even as a light skinned mexican descent always wondered why there wasn't more dark Mexicans in this area.

YA #78197 circa 1967. Cleveland Cottage. 90 day program(s) in those days. Wore your own clothes. No searches after visiting. Fucking summer camp. Didn't do any good. So I made all the rounds. 98 days in Paso Avenal cottage a real snake pit, had to fight every fucking single day. PSI 6 mos in Greenbriar cottage, assigned auto mechanics. YTS 9 mos C-D, assigned to print shop. Editor, institution newspaper. A lot of wasted time but I picked up a few skills. It could have been worse. Say, like if I was born 10 years later. Do that math. You know I woulda got caught up. This post would not exist.

I attended the Wallace Wiggins Elementary School back in 1973, we shared a fence with Nelles. I recall a ward had climbed one of the very tall light fixtures, it was used to illuminate their football field. He was threatening to jump and kill himself, we 5th and 6th graders, not knowing any better, were yelling Jump... I feel guilty about being part of that incident, he did climb down with the help of another ward. Wiggins elementary was closed in the 80's I believe and homes built on the lot now... Time flies...

I’ve had a lot of paranormal encounters when I needed a get away for me at night just to take a drive as a younger man and I had seen a child standing behind a sign at midnight in shorts with a paperboy cap and brown shorts and disappeared.I one time thinking I was tough tried to impress a girl and walked towards hells gates at sunset and a dark figure had ran by me and I don’t know if it was the sunset but it had red eyes.Or seen people in black cloaks or a man walking past my car while cops were apparently looking for him.I know not paranormal just something that I remember.I saw a dead black cat on the road with blood and me being a cat guy I had to see if it was okay so I backed up to see and the cat and blood was gone. There was a house I had driven around a couple times and couldn’t figure out why I kept going around in circles.Later on with the internet I discovered others had similar incident’s.But I love going there. Its nice to walk, look at the views, the little shops, the film history just a nice place:)

PenskeHilton Why anyone would attempt to label an accurate history as "paving over" is beyond me. The producers didn't even flinch when describing the "cages" called "spas".
And as regards "in pursuit of $$$", it's a piece of property, and seeing as how most or all of the historic buildings are no longer there, it serves no one to leave the property fallow.

Thanks so much Brookfield for preparing this historical video; it clearly took some time to prepare. Some thoughts: 1) Perhaps if you took as much time to assess our city's active community interest in historical preservation and political involvement as you did in the preparation of this video, you might actually have a workable project; 2) Your request of the City of Whittier for "economic hardship" status for this project is nonsensical.
