  • Sunaparanta Goa Centre for the Arts presents Gandhi and Me: a conversation with Atul Dodiya.
Mahatma Gandhi has for long been a source of inspiration, and fascination in contemporary stalwart Atul Dodiya’s work.
When India celebrated its 50th year of Independence, Dodiya noticed that Gandhi’s presence was everywhere-on stamps, in government offices, schools and in pop culture-and yet the values that he represented were losing strength and no longer seemed part of the world he witnessed around him.
Since 1999, the philosophy of non-violence and tolerance has been a constant reference point in Dodiya's practice. He has produced over 200 paintings, shutter works and assemblages inspired by Gandhi.
On the 151st birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, Dodiya will talk about the impact Gandhi has had on his practice, why the values he represents are vital to modern society, and address the idea of Gandhi as an artist himself.
