Thanks again! I'm looking at an iPhone -- can you tell me what the cheapest/earliest iPhones are that have strong security? Are these settings applicable to older phones? 💎🦘
Not going lie even as IT Security person for pc's. I am not educated 100% on security on phones so some of the things you explained that I did not know helped a lot! Thanks
What should I do if I get a new iPhone or new MacBook and I don’t want to be having a ton of devices laying around everywhere ? More devices means more items for someone to steal/hack.
What about samsung knox (secure folder) and the fact that you can't delete google apps but you can shut them down? Is it the same? Can they stil track you're phone or not? Grtz
Josh! I’ve been following you over on Bible Memory Goal and when your face popped into my YT feed, I clicked. But it’s a whole different channel 😂. Awesome! You’re dishing up good stuff in two places. Woo hoo!
Any new devices you log into your iCloud won't know the decryption key and won't be able to access your encrypted cloud data until you enter the 28-character recovery key. You have to backup the recovery key manually, but NOT on your phone (and NOT in iCloud), because you are going to need it if your phone gets lost/stolen, so keep it somewhere safe, maybe written down somewhere, or you can just use a recovery contact. Even without ADP enabled, your cloud data is already encrypted. The only difference is that with ADP disabled, Apple stores your decryption key, but with ADP enabled, YOU store the decryption key, so not even Apple have access to it. That's why the key isn't stored in iCloud.
Cool video, good channel in general. I'm wondering your thoughts on a specific question. Is it not bad opsec to have the apps have any historical connection at all? Which is impossible when the software comes baked with these defaults in place. I think it's important to make the distinction that these security config changes should always be done before signing into apps and personalizing the phone. You mention you delete your unused apps every 3 months, but why, if the companies had you for the 3 months, don't they already have you now? They already have all your personal info. Uninstalling and changing settings doesn't delete what they already harvested. You may be stopping to continue sending your telemetry and data to them by uninstalling, but at the end of the day I think there's a fundamental flaw with how privacy is design into our software still, and making these changes is more like mental peace of mind and theater, rather than actual privacy, security, and good opsec. I think it's a whole topic on it's own tbh - what are the measurable actual benefits to changing these configs when 99% of people already gave all their info away through all the defaults, from google, samsung, and icloud sign-ins, to location services (so, they'll already know where you work and live, even after you turn the setting off), and so much more. It's a risk to make people think they are safe tbh. Great video and would love to see your expertise talk about this point some day.
Another good video. I had been under the impression that VPN's were no longer important. Since that is obviously false, is there a free and a paid VPN service that you recommend? Thanks
You’re encrypting the data with your own keys that they don’t have access to. That’s the big difference. It doesn’t matter who the owner of the company is in that case, but as for going out of business - that true of any internet company, I guess. Calculated risk.
Can you make a video testing antitrack apps like Norton or others, please? There seems to be no reviews on RUclips about these apps. Do they really work?
Yea, they don’t, which is why I don’t make a video about it. Mobile apps don’t have the ability to analyze or control data on other parts/apps on the phone.
To add further to your section regarding hidden photos file you can even turn this off within the settings application and hide it altogether within the photo album but still when you're in your photos you can still send photos to the hidden folder just giving another layer of privacy, hope you found this usefulgreat video keep up the good work
Is the sponsor link working for anyone else? The 80% off isn't showing. Also, if something happens to this company what are the guarantees on this data? I'm thinking of using this as an offsite backup for a NAS. If anyone has experience with this service, would love to hear your thoughts.
I have NO expectation of privacy with phones or windows or any device that has my personal information on it. I also don't use the bathroom while looking at my phone, and other activities, etc.
I was told by a manager at a financial institution where I have an account that faceID is a no no! Don’t use it she says, to just write your password somewhere in the house! I was wondering what anyone here thinks about that? Thanks!
@@AllThingsSecuredFaceID, fingerprint, and other Biometric data are not protected under the law, but passcodes are protected. So, the police can compel you to unlock your phone with your biometric data but not with a passcode.
A major failure is if you have older Mac devices not able to be updated to the latest OS. You have to remove these devices from your account to enable ADP.
Another good idea is to run lockdown mode all day long. It’s not a scary as most people would make you think the only people that I think would have a problem with this are people who use FaceTime or game centre on a regular basis
The only people who need to use advanced data protection are people at risk of being individually targeted by other people, organisations, or governments/nation states. It’s overkill for the average person, and puts regular people at risk of losing access to their important files and precious memories, because if they lose that one recovery key, they lose everything!
I respectfully disagree. We need to learn to be in control of our own data, and Apple gives us a fairly risk-limited way to do this. Adding a recovery contact and backup codes mean that it would be pretty difficult to get locked out.
Why do you talk only about Apple?. It is not the only compagny making cell telephones?!. This is weird of your part. Just because you have Apple, it does not mean that the 8 billion population of this earth have Apple too!.
He’s presumably in the US, where most people are Apple users. Also, with so many different manufacturers changing settings on Androids, it’s difficult to make a video that is as simple as one for Apple, since different settings are likely in different locations, not universally defaulting to the same settings, etc. Also, he could just be an iPhone user that doesn’t know that much about Android 😂🤷♂️

I added my two Yubikey 5 keys to my iPhone as security keys.
Check your security and privacy changes after phone updates. I'm an android user but after updates I've had some settings reset back to default.

Remove the devices you don’t use and sell them.
I’m so grateful for the work you do Josh. This episode was particularly helpful.
Thanks!
You mentioned turning on a VPN when connecting to a public wifi. What are your thoughts on Apple Private Relay, is that enough?
Yea, for most people that's good enough.

Good question

I wouldn’t consider them terribly “important”, but they can be useful in certain cases. I recommend ProtonVPN, which also has a free plan.
Thanks, Data Encryption is good one
Nice content. But Internxt is expensive compared to other data storage companies😬

Doesn’t let you turn it on if you have an unsupported device.. like an old iMac that’s no longer supported. Need to remove it from your account 😮
That is correct, unfortunately.
Please make a video for Android as well.

For the average person, I would say yes.
On this one point I would have to absolutly disagree. Even apples fingerprint verification is more secure. I'm sorry but face id is a hard pass.
2FA via mobile and biometrics are already security missteps and liabilities.
